Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On January 6, 2014, Arsenal played against Tottenham in an FA Cup game. Arsenal's player, who first played with the English national squad when he was 17, injured his left knee, leaving him out of Brazil 2014. Which British player is this?

Answer: Theo Walcott

Even though Arsenal won 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup, Walcott ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee, which required a recovery of at least 6 months. Amazingly, this wasn't the first time this happened to Walcott, as he was selected for the 2006 World Cup but did not play, and he was left out of the 2010 World Cup because of his constant injuries.
2. On January 22, 2014, Colombia suffered when Soner Ertek, from the team Chasselay, committed a foul on a Monaco forward, injuring his anterior cruciate ligament and leaving him out of the World Cup. Which player, unfortunately for Colombia, missed the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: Radamel Falcao

While playing a French Cup match, Soner Ertek tried to prevent Falcao's goal with a sliding tackle, injuring Falcao. Ertek said he was very sorry, and Falcao thanked him, telling him it was a "soccer accident". Falcao's mother also told Ertek to remain calm and encouraged fans to stop insulting him. On May 14, doctors said he was only 60% ready, and coach Jose Pekerman announced in June that Falcao would not be playing in Brazil. Still, he traveled with the team to watch them play. Colombian Aldo Leao was also injured before the World Cip started and needed to be replaced.
3. On January 25, 2014, the fifth round of the FA Cup was being played in England, when Everton's Costa Rican star suffered a double leg break as he tried to block a shot by Stevenage's Simon Heslop. Which player wasn't able to join Costa Rica for the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: Bryan Oviedo

22 minutes after the start of the Stevenage-Everton game, which Everton won 4-0, Bryan Oviedo tried to block a shot from the Stevenage forward, and immediately touched his ankle. He was stretchered off the field, and it was later confirmed that he would miss the World Cup. This was not good news for Costa Rica, as it drew a very tough group: Uruguay, England and Italy.
4. On March 26, 2014, FC Barcelona's starting goalkeeper was injured 22 minutes after the game against Celta started. After stopping a free kick, he landed on the ground and broke the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee, forcing him to miss the World Cup. Which Spanish goalkeeper is he?

Answer: Victor Valdes

Victor Valdes was competing with Iker Casillas for the starting goalkeeper position in the Spanish team. Valdes was successfully operated, but his recovery time was six months, relegating him from Brazil. Spain ended up calling Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, and David de Gea as its goalkeepers.
5. May 20 was not a good day for soccer, as two players were left out of their respective national teams. One was Chilean Matias Fernandez, who suffered a broken ligament in his right ankle. The other was Juan Carlos Medina, who played for Club America and was one of coach Miguel Herrera's favorites. Which country was Medina going to represent at the World Cup?

Answer: Mexico

Juan Carlos "Topo" (Spanish for "mole") Medina injured himself during a training session. His right ankle had been injured a few months earlier, and it was aggravated while training. Medina cried when he heard he had no chance of going to the World Cup, as it was perhaps his only choice. He was replaced by Miguel Ponce.
6. On May 28, 2014, it was announced that the Netherlands would miss one of its midfielders because of an injury to his right leg. Which former Real Madrid player was left out of the 2014 World Cup?

After scoring a great goal, a player suffered a double leg break after crashing with Ecuador's Segundo Castillo, who also abandoned the match because of his injury. Which Mexican player, who was a champion with Club Leon, missed the World Cup?

Answer: Luis Montes

Luis Montes was filled with adrenaline after his goal, so he attacked the ball with too much force, crashing with Segundo Castillo and causing him to miss the World Cup. Castillo was not left out of the list. Montes immediately started crying and yelling "No!", as he knew what this injury meant. Montes was substituted by Javier Aquino in the final list. Rafael Marquez was also injured in the match, which was concerning for the Mexican team, but thankfully he could recover and play in the World Cup.
