Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player scored the first goal of the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: Marcelo

The first match of the 2014 World Cup was between Brazil and Croatia. Brazil's Marcelo did score in the 11th minute, but not for Brazil - it was an own-goal that gave Croatia the lead. Luckily, Brazil managed to pull back three goals for a first win. The goals were scored by Neymar in the 29th minute, Neymar again with a penalty in the 71st minute and by Oscar one minute into stoppage time.
2. Who scored the amazing diving header in Holland's 5-1 drubbing of Spain?

Answer: Robin van Persie

Both Robben and Van Persie scored two goals for Holland, with De Vrij adding one more. Alonso converted Spain's only goal...from the penalty spot. Holland sure had sweet revenge on Spain for the final of the previous World Cup!
3. Who was the player who scored Cameroon's only goal in the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: Joel Matip

Matip scored in, of all games, the game against Brazil. Surprisingly he got past the tough defense. Still, Cameroon lost 4-1. Neymar, Fred and Fernandinho scored Brazil's four goals, with Neymar hitting the back of the net twice.
4. Who was the Portuguese player who got a red card for headbutting a German player?

Answer: Pepe

Pepe headbutted Thomas Mueller of Germany in the game when Portugal were 2-0 ahead. With a player less, Portugal lost 4-0 in the end and captain Cristiano Ronaldo had to be consoled by his coach. Mueller scored a hat-trick and Mats Hummels scored Germany's other goal.
5. Who scored the only goal in Argentina's round of 16 game against Switzerland?

Answer: Angel di Maria

Angel di Maria scored with two minutes left in extra time, assisted by captain Lionel Messi. Argentina scraped through 1-0 to go on to the quarter-finals.
6. Who was the player that injured Neymar in the quarter-finals and dashed Brazil's hopes of winning the World Cup?

Answer: Juan Zuniga

Zuniga kneed Neymar in his spine, leaving him with fractured vertebrae and ruled him out of the rest of the World Cup. Without him, Brazil lost their next two games 7-1 (Germany) and 3-0 (Holland) to gain fourth place.
7. Who scored Brazil's only goal in their humiliating 7-1 defeat against Germany?

Answer: Oscar

Oscar scored in the last minute of normal time to salvage a little bit of pride for Brazil. Mueller, Klose, Kroos, Khedira and Schuerrle scored Germany's seven goals, with Kroos and Schuerrle grabbing braces.
8. Who was the goalkeeper that conceded all four penalties in the shoot out and sent the Netherlands into the third-place playoff instead of the finals?

Answer: Jasper Cillissen

Although Cillissen kept a clean sheet during the game, he failed to save all four Argentina penalties and as Vlaar and Sneijder missed their penalties, the Oranje set up a third-place playoff against Brazil.
9. Who scored the last goal of the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: Mario Gotze

Gotze scored the only goal of the 2014 World Cup final, dashing Argentina's hopes of winning a third World Cup. More surprisingly, 'Super Mario' only came on as a substitute in the 88th minute! Congrats to Germany!
10. Who won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup?

Answer: James Rodriguez

James Rodriguez of Colombia scored six goals in 5 games, with an average of 1.2 goals per game. Mueller scored five in 7 games, and Messi and Neymar both had four goals in 7 games and 5 games respectively. Mueller won the Silver and Neymar the Bronze Boot (on count back).
