Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tennessee Volunteers

In its inaugural season, the BCS was set up to feature the four most prestigious bowl games at the time: the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Sugar Bowl. Each bowl would hold the championship every four years and the three non-championship bowls would select teams from among the most highly ranked teams remaining.

The 1999 Fiesta Bowl hosted the first championship as Tennessee defeated Florida State at Sundevil Stadium in Tempe Arizona.
2. Florida State Seminoles

In the 2000 Sugar Bowl, the Florida State Seminoles defeated conference rival Michael Vick's Virginia Tech squad in an offensive showdown. Virginia Tech held a 1-point lead at the conclusion of the third quarter by Bobby Bowden's Seminoles churned out 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to give Florida State the win.
3. Oklahoma Sooners

In just his second year as coach of the Oklahoma Sooners, Bob Stoops took his team to a perfect 12-0 season record and a Big XII conference championship. Despite this, 11-1 Florida State was favored by nearly two touchdowns over the Sooners. The game would be a defensive slugfest with only one touchdown scored by either team, a short touchdown run by OU's Quentin Griffin. Florida State's only points would come on a high snap to OU punter Jeff Ferguson and the resulting safety.

The game also featured Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke of Florida State and runner up, Josh Heupel of Oklahoma.
4. Miami Hurricanes

The 2002 Rose Bowl marked the second year in a row that the Heisman Trophy winner faced off against a runner up. Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch's Nebraska Cornhuskers faced off against Ken Dorsey and the Miami Hurricanes. Miami pulled ahead 34-0 by the end of the first half and never looked back to earn their fifth national title.
5. Ohio State Buckeyes

The 2003 Fiesta Bowl saw Miami return to the national championship game, facing off against the Ohio State Buckeyes. A defensive battle went into overtime where a controversial pass interference penalty was called on Miami, erasing a touchdown and sending the game into a second overtime. Miami would fail to score and the Buckeyes won en route to becoming the first college football team to finish their season with a 14-0 record.
6. LSU Tigers - First Time

The Oklahoma Sooners came into the BCS championship for the second time in four years facing the rising SEC champion LSU, coached by the venerable Nick Saban. LSU found themselves ahead 21-7 in the third quarter and Heisman Trophy winner Jason White was unable to mount a significant comeback, losing in the end by a touchdown.
7. USC Trojans

With the largest margin of defeat in a BCS Championship Game thus far, the USC trojans defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 55-19 in the Orange Bowl. The Heisman Curse was seemingly broken as Heisman winner Matt Leinart's USC emerged victorious. In 2010, however, USC would vacate the win as part of an NCAA investigation into violations committed by the football and men's basketball programs.
8. Texas Longhorns

USC returned to the championship game in 2006, this time against the Texas Longhorns in the Rose Bowl. An offensive battle, Texas took the lead with a 14-yard touchdown scramble by quarterback Vince Young. With only 16 seconds left and no timeouts, USC was unable to score again.

This was the first time two Heisman trophy winners appeared in the same game and on the same team. QB Matt Leinart who had won in the previous season along with RB Reggie Bush who has won the award week prior. Bush would later have his Heisman stripped as part of the NCAA investigation.
9. Florida Gators

The Florida Gators become the ninth different BCS champion in nine years. For the 2006 season, an additional game called the BCS National Championship Game was added creating five total BCS games. The first of these featured the Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

10. LSU Tigers - Second Time

With a win in the 2008 BCS Championship Game, the LSU Tigers made history as the first repeat BCS champions, defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes 38-24 in the Louisiana Superdome. Ohio State entered the second half with a 14-point deficit but could only trade touchdowns with LSU and failed to mount a significant comeback.
