Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following had the honor of playing with both greats Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, and was a Hall of Fame great himself?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

None of the others ever played for the Yankees. Gehrig, who was one of baseball greats himself, played with the Babe from 1923-1934 on the Yankees. The Babe departed to the Boston Braves for the 1935 season, then Lou and the Yankee Clipper DiMaggio, hooked up from 1936-1939.
2. One swing of the bat made this player go down in infamy. Who was it that was honored to have played with both Willie Mays and Hank Aaron?

Answer: Bobby Thomson

It was Thomson's "shot heard around the world" in the 1951 season that put the Giants on top of the Dodgers in the National League. Mays was a Giant rookie in 1951. The Giants traded Thomson to the Braves in 1954, but Thomson injured himself, and the Braves replaced him with rookie Hank Aaron. The rest was history.
3. Which of the following players were on the same roster as Cincinnati Red Pete Rose, and Oriole great Brooks Robinson?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Frank played for three seasons on the Reds' roster with Pete Rose from 1963-1965. Then the shocking news of Robinson being traded to the Orioles in 1966 occurred. Rostered with future Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson at third base, Frank showed his appreciation by winning the Triple Crown and AL MVP in an Oriole uniform in 1966. Frank played with Brooks from 1966-1971.

He retired in 1976 with 586 home runs.
4. Which Cy Young contender played with both Dodger Orel Hershiser, the 1988 NL Cy Young winner, and also Johan Santana, a Minnesota Twins Cy Young winner?

Answer: Jesse Orosco

The others were not pitchers or played for either the Dodgers or Twins. Orosco played with Hershiser in 1988 as the Dodgers won in the NLCS against the Mets. Pitching for 24 seasons in his career, Jesse's final game was as a Twin in 2003, watching Santana go 12-3. Santana went on to win the Cy Young award in 2004, then the Triple Crown and another Cy Young award in 2006. Orosco himself finished third in the Cy Young voting in 1983 with the Mets.
5. Which of the following played with two of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan?

Answer: Ron Fairly

All the others retired from baseball before Sandy Koufax was a rookie in 1955. From 1958-1966, the outfielder-first baseman was a Dodger with Koufax, then later in his career found himself with Nolan on the 1978 California Angels.
6. Which pitcher played with both home run kings of Mickey Mantle and Reggie Jackson?

Answer: Al Downing

The others weren't pitchers. Downing pitched for the New York Yankees on the roster with Mantle in 1961, until Mickey retired in 1968. After being traded to the Athletics in December 1969, Al found himself looking at the future Mr. October, Reggie Jackson. Downing also went into the record books for dishing up Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth's record.
7. Which Cy Young runner-up played with both Bob Gibson and Barry Bonds on different teams?

Answer: Jerry Reuss

The others never pitched in their career. Reuss played with Gibson and his St. Louis Cardinals from 1969-1971, then later in his career found himself playing with Bonds on the 1990 Pittsburgh Pirates, the first of two MVPs that Barry won in Pittsburgh. Reuss pitched from 1969-1990, and was the Cy Young award runner-up in 1980 to Steve Carlton of the Phillies.
8. These two players won the American League Rookie of the Year 20 seasons apart. Which American League MVP played with both Jose Canseco and pitcher Justin Verlander?

Answer: Ivan Rodriguez

The others listed were all National Leaguers and never won the MVP award. Pudge played with Canseco on the Texas Rangers from 1992-1994. Jose won the ROY in 1986. Verlander made two game appearances with the Tigers in 2005, after Rodriguez joined Detroit in 2004. Verlander then won the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2006 with his 17-9 record.
9. Hall of Fame great Ty Cobb began his career in 1905 while fellow Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg retired in 1947. Although Cobb and Greenberg never played together on the same team, which MVP and Hall of Fame great had the honor of playing with both?

Answer: Mickey Cochrane

The others listed were done with baseball before Ty Cobb was a rookie. Cochrane played with Cobb on the 1927 Philadelphia Athletics in Cobb's first season with the A's after 22 loyal seasons in Detroit. Cochrane was in his third season with Philadelphia. Mickey hooked up later in his career beside Hank Greenberg with the Tigers from 1934-1937. Cochrane was an American League MVP in 1928 and 1934, then was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1947, in Greenberg's final season of baseball.
10. The great Satchel Paige was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1971 after retiring for his first time in 1953 after five seasons in the Majors, and recording an unofficial 2500 victories in the Negro Leagues. Another Hall of Fame great Bob Gibson, was inducted 10 years later in 1981. Which Major League player, whose career spanned five decades in the Majors, played with both Paige and Gibson?

Answer: Minnie Minoso

The others not only did not play in five decades, but they didn't last for more than five seasons in the Majors. Minoso was a Cleveland rookie in 1949. He retired in 1964 with the Chicago White Sox, but made a comeback in 1976 with Chicago again, then retired for what seemed to be the final time.

Another round with the White Sox in 1980, Minnie played for two games, went 0-2, then hung up his cleats for good at the age of 54. He played with Satchel on the 1949 Indians, then with Gibson on the 1962 St. Louis Cardinals.
