Answer: First pitcher was ejected for throwing a spitball

The Phillies made their only postseason appearance in the '50s, in 1950, losing to the Yankees 4 games to 0. On July 20, 1944, Nels Potter of the St. Louis Browns was the first pitcher ever to be ejected for throwing a spitter.

The Browns were playing the Yankees.
