Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We might be modest, but we both know that we were two of the best players of the 1980s and 1990s. Yet I can say that in the 1980s, I won more gold gloves at my position than any other player in my league. Who am I?

Answer: Neither

Ripken didn't win his first gold glove until 1991 while Gwynn, despite winning three, was beaten out by Andre Dawson, who won 4 as a right fielder and 8 overall.
2. Although I cannot fault my friend, I believe I was the most consistent. Other than my rookie season, I batted at least .300 in every year of my major league career. Who am I?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

This might be the most impressive of Gwynn's career achievements (1982-2001). He batted .289 as a rookie and that was his worst season.
3. Although I wasn't known particularly for my speed, I did hit 10 triples in a season at one point in my career. Who am I?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Gwynn did it four times. Ripken's career high was 7 trples in a season.
4. I wouldn't call this bragging, but I was happy when I was voted my league's Most Valuable Player. Who am I?

Answer: Cal Ripken, Jr.

Gwynn never won an MVP award despite batting .394 in the strike-shortened 1994 season. Ripken won two (1983 and 1991).
5. Although both my colleague and I reached 3000 career hits, I did it in style: with a home run! Who am I?

Answer: Neither

Playing during the same era, Wade Boggs hit a home run for his 3000th hit on August 7, 1999 for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Gwynn merely singled, as did Ripken.
6. I can't say that the fans didn't love me. From 1990 until 1999, I was selected for the All Star game every year. Who am I?

Answer: Both

The fans obviously loved Ripken more, voting him a starter each year. Gwynn only played in 9 All Star games but was selected for all 10.
7. You probably forgot that in my final season, I had 100 hits despite falling shy in my second-to-last season. Who am I?

Answer: Cal Ripken, Jr.

Gwynn only had 33 hits in limited action during his final season (2001). Ripken, despite batting only .239, had 114 hits (also 2001).
8. I had the most hits of any player in my league during the 1990s? Who am I?

Answer: Neither

Well, there were two people trying to trick you on this question. Mark Grace had 1754 hits, the most in MLB and the NL. Second in MLB and first in the AL was Rafael Palmeiro, who had 1747. Gwynn was 3rd in the NL and 4th in MLB with 1713 hits, while Ripken was 3rd in the AL and 7th in MLB with 1589.
9. My family loves playing in the majors. Both my brother and I made it to the big leagues, although my career started before his and ended after his. Who am I?

Answer: Both

Both Billy Ripken and Chris Gwynn played for at least 10 years in the big leagues, but neither made nearly the impact as either brother did.
10. My family really loves playing in the majors. I was part of a junior-senior father-son pair to play in the majors. Who am I?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Although Ripken was managed by his father, his dad never made it as a player. Gwynn's son, Tony Gwynn Jr., made it to the big leagues in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
