Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1963, Hall of Fame great Sandy Koufax won the Cy Young and MVP Award. Staying with the Dodgers, in 1988, Kirk Gibson won the MVP Award while teammate Orel Hershiser won the Cy Young. Who was the only Hall of Famer to play with all three greats?

Answer: Don Sutton

Sutton played on the 1966 Dodgers in Koufax's final season, then hooked up with Gibson and Hershiser on the 1988 Dodgers. Sutton was the first player in history to throw 100+ strikeouts in 21 seasons and never win a strikeout crown. It also took him 21 seasons to reach the 300-win milestone, having won only 20 games in a season one time in his career.

Aparicio won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1956. Luis played every one of his 2581 games at shortstop over 18 seasons. Sievers played with Aparicio on the 1961 White Sox, then with Fisk on the 1973 Red Sox. Luis was inducted into the hall in 1984.

DiMaggio was a rookie in 1936 with the Yankees, and was rostered in four season with Gehrig who stepped down from baseball in 1939. Mickey was a Yankee rookie in 1951, and retired in 1968. DiMaggio retired after only 13 seasons (missing three due to war) when Mantle was a rookie.

Answer: Charlie Gehringer

Cobb played from 1905-1928, with his final two seasons with the Athletics.
Gehringer was a 19-season career Tiger from 1924-1942. Charlie won the AL MVP in 1937. Newhouser was a Tiger from 1939-1953, and won back-to-back MVPs in 1944 and 1945.

He hooked up with Aaron on the 1969 and 1970 Braves. Hoyt appeared in 1070 career games and retired with a 143-122 record.
Ironically, the player who provided the "shot heard round the world" in 1951, Bobby Thomson played with both Mays and Aaron also. It was Thomson's injury that allowed rookie Hank Aaron to take his place with the Braves in 1954. The rest was history.
