Rocky had 49 wins from 49 fights including 43 by knockout, an incredible record in heavyweight boxing. After retirement he briefly worked in TV, and for many years he was a referee in both boxing and wrestling. Sadly in 1969, and on the eve of his 46th birthday, Rocky lost his life in a plane crash.

After having great success throughout the 1950s, in 1960 at age 26, Surtees switched from racing motorcycles to cars. John made his Formula One debut driving for the Lotus team. After a brief time with team Cooper, in 1963 he moved on to the formidable Italian team Ferrari.

In 1964 driving a Ferrari V8, he won the Formula One World Championship. He was the first to win World Championships on both two and four wheels.

During an illustrious 40-year career, Jack amassed an incredible 18 wins in major championships, 103 professional circuit wins, and set a record for having had 6 wins at the Masters. He played in 6 Ryder Cups, captaining his team twice. On 8 occasions he topped the PGA money list.

Considered slow by some critics, Alf was a resolute defender and a great passer of the ball. In his 11-year professional career he gained 32 caps for England. Retiring in 1955, he was offered the job of manager at Ipswich Town who at the time were in the lower divisions.

After promotion to the first division of the football league in season 1959-60, Alf's Ipswich were crowned champions. Following this success he was appointed as England manager. Ramsey completely changed England's playing tactics.

This move certainly helped England win the 1966 FIFA World Cup. In 1967, he was Knighted for his service to English football. Despite having some great players at his disposal, failure in future World Cups resulted in his dismissal. The 1966 World Cup win remains Englands only success.

Always fast and graceful on court, her attacking nature was well suited to playing on her favoured surface grass. Maria played on the international tennis scene between 1958-1968, winning 19 grand slam titles (7 singles, 11 womens doubles). Her skill at doubles was so good that she amazingly won her 11 women's doubles finals playing with 6 different partners. Suffering many injuries throughout her career, Maria retired in 1969.

Red Rum was born in 1965, and without a doubt one of Britain's most popular race horses. "Rummy" was owned by Mr. Noel Le Mare and was trained by Ginger MaCain at his stables in Southport on the West coast of England. For most of his life Red Rum suffered a debilitating, incurable bone disease to his foot, a fact not well known by the public. Based on the coast, Ginger would take Red Rum for a theraputic swim in the sea before every Grand National.

The much loved Red Rum died in 1995, and was buried by the winning post at Aintree Racecourse, the home of the Grand National.

His epitaph reads, "Respect this place, This hallowed ground, A legend here, His rest has found, His feet would fly, Our spirits soar, He earned our love for evermore."

Freddie Trueman took 2302 first class wickets including four hat-tricks at a truly amazing average of 18.27. Fred's career spanned 20 years, and in his time he became the first man to take 300 test wickets. He bowled more than 99,000 deliveries in first class cricket. Despite this massive workload, he seldom missed a game through injury, a testament to his magnificent bowling action.

Thompson's two victories in the Olympic Decathlon event, and he had previously won the gold at the 1980 Moscow Games. Traditionally, the title "Worlds Greatest Athlete" is bestowed to the winner of the Olympic Decathlon. Daley certainly had that honour throughout the 1980s.

Playing stand off, Roger Millward is still considered to be one of the greatest players ever to grace the game of Rugby League. Roger made 406 appearances for HKR and 47 for Great Britain. He scored a grand total of 1872 points throughout his illustrious career. Later in his 60s, he lived in semi-retirement close to his hometown of Castleford in West Yorkshire.

Throughout his long career, Lester had a constant battle to keep his weight down. Tall for a jockey, he was given the nickname "The long fellow". Always popular with the British public, he was crowned champion jockey on 11 occasions. He had 4493 career wins including 9 Derby victories. Lester had his last winner in 1994 and retired in 1995.

He later lived near Newmarket, the home of racing.
