Leading 7-3 at quarter time, the Oilers piled on 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding 25 point half time lead, which was soon extended to 32. An amazing 28-7 third quarter going the other way suddenly turned the match into an enthralling contest.

Many of Liverpool's fans left the ground at half time assuming the match was unwinnable. The club was in the middle of a very poor domestic season and there seemed little hope, until they scored 3 unanswered goals, and then won on penalties with one memorable save from goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.

He defeated Pat Rafter from Australia in a gripping five set match to overcome some incredible odds and become the first wildcard entry to win at any Grand Slam event.

Austria's Lauder survived a serious crash which left him with severe burns and lung damage due to inhalation of toxic fumes. The crash only took him out of racing for two months, following which he returned to lose the championship by the slimmest margin. He did, however, go on to win the 1977 championship.

Marciano waited patiently for the right moment before landing the perfect right hook to knock the champ down and out in the 13th Round. He went into this bout with a 42-0 record and won the World Heavyweight title. His last bout was three years later in September 1956. He retired in April 1956 with an amazing undefeated career of 49 bouts for 49 wins (of which 43 were by KO).
