Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. AFC North - Winner
Answer: Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens had an NFL-best record of 13-4 led by MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was voted the league's MVP for the second time in his young career. Following a bye in the Wild Card Round, the Ravens would defeat the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round and ultimately lose to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.
2. AFC South - Winner
Answer: Houston Texans
The Texas had the second and third pick in the draft and cashed in handsomely, drafting the Offensive Rookie of the Year in CJ Stroud with the 2nd overall pick, and the Defensive Rookie of the Year in Will Anderson Jr. Along with rookie head coach DeMeco Ryans, the Texans were able to secure their division with a win over the Indianapolis Colts in the last week of the season.
They would upset the Cleveland Browns at home in the Wild Card Round, only to fall to the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round.
3. AFC West - Winner
Answer: Kansas City Chiefs
The defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City chiefs won their division for the sixth time in six years with two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. They would then play one home game and two road games in the playoffs to make it to their second consecutive Super Bowl and fourth in five years.
They won the big game in overtime against the San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowl LVIII in Feb. 2024).
4. AFC East - Winner
Answer: Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills had a rocky start to the season, losing to the a Jets team who had lost their starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the first series of the season. They would continue to struggle until December, when the team began to excel running the ball and was able to finish the season strong (winning their last seven games) and top the AFC East for the fourth straight year. Led by quarterback Josh Allen, they defeated the Steelers in the Wild Card round but lost to the eventual AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.
5. NFC North - Winner
Answer: Detroit Lions
The Lions were fan favorite stories throughout the season. Led by their highly-emotional, no nonsense head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions were able to win their first playoff game since 1992 against the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round. They followed that up with a Divisional Round win at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before eventually falling to the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.
6. NFC South - Winner
Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tom Brady leaving a franchise is never easy, but with former #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield at quarterback, the Bucs were the surprise winners of their rather weak division (Tampa finished 8-9 and the other three all finished 7-10). They further solidified their strong season by defeating the previous year's NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles at home in the Wild Card round before eventually falling to a red-hot Detroit Lions team in the Divisional Round.
7. NFC West - Winner
Answer: San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers started the previous year's "Mr. Irrelevant" (last pick in the draft) Brock Purdy at quarterback, who led his highly talented team to the NFC's number 1 seed. While they dominated the regular season, the Niners struggled in the playoffs against what was expected to be inferior opposition in the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
However, the team was able to win both games and advance to their second Super Bowl in the Kyle Shanahan era. They would come up short, losing the game to the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs in overtime.
8. NFC East - Winner
Answer: Dallas Cowboys
The Philadelphia Eagles had a strong bid to win the division, starting their season 10-1 while the Cowboys faltered during Week 3, losing to the Arizona Cardinals. However, a strong finish from Dallas and a complete late-season collapse from Philadelphia helped the Cowboys secure the division title and the NFC's #2 seed.
The expectations of a strong season came to a screeching halt, however, in the Wild Card Round, when the heavily favored Cowboys lost in spectacular fashion to the #7 seed in the NFC and youngest team in the league, the Green Bay Packers.
9. Home of the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year
Answer: Cleveland Browns
Myles Garrett (Defensive End) collected his first Defensive Player of the Year Award, finishing the season with 14 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and 3 passes defensed. The 2017 #1 overall pick is also known for making an impact on every play, even when it does not appear on the stat sheet.
10. Home of the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award
Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers
The NFL describes this award as its most prestigious accolade, even though it is not only strictly related to performance on the football field. The award is given to one play every season for outstanding contribution to philanthropy and community impact.
It was known as the "NFL Man of the Year" award until Walter Payton (the 1977 recipient) died in 1999 at 46 years of age. Cameron Heyward (Defensive Line) won the award in the 2023 season, representing the Pittsburgh Steelers. A Pittsburgh native, Heyward has been giving back to his community his entire professional career, through "Heyward House Foundation", "Suiting Up for Success", and "Voices of Hope Scholarship".
