Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1990 season saw the New York Giants work their way to a Super Bowl XXV win against the Bills, after defeating the 14-2 49ers in the Conference Championship game. Which team was on the other end of the stick by going 1-15 in the season?

Answer: New England Patriots

The Patriots' only win in the season was in week 2, a 16-14 win over the Colts. Three New England quarterbacks threw a total of 14 touchdowns with 19 interceptions in the season.
2. Which Buffalo Bills running back in 1991 was named MVP after rushing for 1407 yards, and catching passes for another 631 yards?

Answer: Thurman Thomas

Thomas was in his fourth season with the Bills. He led the league in rushing yards per carry with a 4.9 average. With the rushing and catching threat that Thurman was, he led the league in four consecutive seasons from 1989-1992 in total yards from scrimmage. He retired as a Dolphin in 2000, then inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.
3. For the second time in three seasons, the 1992 San Francisco 49ers led the league with the best record of 14-2, but failed to go to the Super Bowl with that record again. Who knocked them out of the Conference Championship?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The 13-3 Cowboys stopped the 49ers 30-20. The Cowboys would meet the Bills in Super Bowl XXVII, and embarrass Buffalo 52-17.
4. Although 49er quarterback Steve Young led the league in touchdown passes and threw for over 4000 yards in 1993, he fell only seven yards short of taking the passing yardage title. Which Bronco quarterback won the crown with his 4030 yards?

Answer: John Elway

Both Elway and Young were the only quarterbacks in the season to top the 4000-yard passing mark. Elway had a tremendous season with a TD/INT ratio of 25-10. The Broncos still finished with a meager 9-7 record. They entered the playoffs as a wildcard, then were put down by the Raiders 42-24. The season also saw the Buffalo Bills lose their fourth consecutive Super Bowl.
5. With the baseball strike season of 1994, NFL fans were anxious for some football. After the 49ers won 61 games in five previous seasons, and with their 13-3 1994 record, they had their first Super Bowl winning season of the decade. Who did they defeat in Super Bowl XXIX?

Answer: Chargers

Leading the league in passing touchdowns with 35, Steve Young led the 49ers to a 49-26 win over the Bills in the playoffs. Including the playoffs, the 49ers averaged an amazing 33.5 points per game. They topped the 40-point game mark seven times.
6. Fans saw a passing season in 1995, with four quarterbacks throwing for over 4000 yards in the season. They were Jeff George of the Falcons, Warren Moon of the Vikings, the Lions' Scott Mitchell, and which Green Bay Packer quarterback?

Answer: Brett Favre

Favre threw for 4413 yards with a TD/INT ratio of 38-13. He led the Packers to a 11-5 record and a meeting with the Cowboys in the Conference Championship game (which they lost 27-38). Brett and the Packers ended their season in January 1996 with a 13-6 record.
7. Football lost an NFL icon on December 6, 1996. Who was this that died on that day?

Answer: Pete Rozelle

Rozelle was NFL Commissioner from 1960-1989. He was instrumental in making the NFL what it is today. One of his most famous battles was with Raider owner Al Davis, which resulted in Davis moving the team to Los Angeles.
8. The 1997 season was fairly balanced, and saw only the Colts win less than four games. Even with that, which Colts quarterback finished runner-up in the season with the second best pass completion percentage?

Answer: Jim Harbaugh

The others listed were not in the NFL in 1997. The Colts' 3-13 season was not that indicative. Four times in the season, the Colts scored more than 25 points in a game and ended up losing. Harbaugh was somewhat of a highlight, throwing 10 touchdowns with four interceptions, and finishing second to 49er Steve Young with a 61.2% completion rate.
9. The 1998 Minnesota Vikings led the NFL with their 15-1 season. Their only loss was to the Buccaneers in week 9. The Broncos made their sixth Super Bowl appearance, and defeated the NFC team that took out the Vikings in the Conference Championship. Which team was this?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The others were all AFC teams and could not have met the Vikings in the Conference Championship. The Broncos defeated the Jets in their Conference Championship, and the Falcons downed the Vikings 30-27 in theirs. It was Atlanta's first Super Bowl appearance, but they were welcomed with a 31-19 Bronco win.
10. Which quarterback in 1999 led the league in completions and passing yardage in the season?

Answer: Steve Beuerlein

The others were all retired. Steve Beuerlein was in his fifth team in 1999 with the Panthers, after playing with the Raiders, Cowboys, Cardinals, and Jaguars. He threw for 4436 yards while completing 343 passes. He finished second in pass attempts (571), and passing touchdowns with 36.
