Answer: Men's BMX

Maris Strombergs was the inaugural winner of the men's BMX Gold Medal when the event was introduced at the 2008 Beijing Games. He won the 2012 BMX final race for the medals in a time of 37.576, just edging out the Australian rider Sam Willoughby who took silver in a time of 37.929. 2. Patrick Chan won the men's singles at the 2012 World Figure Skating Championships. Which country did Patrick represent (eh)?

Answer: Canada

The 2012 event was held at the Palais des Congres Acropolis in Nice, France. Twenty-seven skaters started in the preliminary rounds of the men's singles. From here the top twelve would join the eighteen men who had pre-qualified for the short program. Chan dominated the short program and held a solid lead over Brezina of the Czech Republic and Takahashi of Japan. He increased his advantage the next day in the free skating section to win comfortably from Takahashi and Hanyu, also from Japan. Brezina faded to finish sixth.
For Chan, who started skating when he was five years old, this was his second World Championships Gold Medal, an award that compliments his victories in the Grand Prix Championships and the Four Continents competition. In 2011 his achievements were such that he was presented the Lou Marsh Award as Canada's top athlete.

3. Which female athlete won the Women's singles Wheelchair Tennis Gold Medal for a fourth time at the London 2012 Paralympic Games?

Esther, from the Netherlands, has dominated Wheelchair tennis since 1999 winning an incredible 687 singles matches and losing only twenty-five times. She has collected seven Paralympic titles, 42 Grand Slam titles and 22 Year End championships. Her last loss in a singles match was in January 2003 when she was beaten by the Australian Daniela Di Toro. In the run to her retirement, in 2013, she maintained a winning streak of 470 games.

4. The Italian former racing driver Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi won two gold medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games. He won the road race and the road time trail for his class in the individuals and also earned a silver medal for the road mixed team event. Which classification did Alex compete in?

Answer: H4

The H4 class is for cyclists with impairments to their legs and are required to use a hand-cycle to race. Alex had lost his legs in a racing accident in 2001 competing in the American Memorial 500 Cart event in Germany. Despite losing his legs in the accident, Alex continued to compete in motorsport, ironically earning second and third places at the Brands Hatch venue where he would later earn his hand-cycling medals. He took up the hand-cycle in 2007 and was encouraged by his fourth place finish in the New York Marathon that same year after only four weeks of training. Immediately he set his sights on competing for Italy in the 2012 Paralympic Games and his ambition drove him to winning the Venice Marathon in 2009 and the Rome Marathon in 2010. Despite his success at hand-cycling he still harboured dreams of returning to motor sport and he has set his eyes on the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

5. Ironically the UK's Rachel Atherton rose to become the UCI World Champion in 2012 in what mountain bike discipline?

Answer: Downhill

Rachel dominated the championships winning five of the six events she contested, there were seven races overall. She was relegated to second spot during the third round of the series that was contested in countries as far afield as South Africa, Italy, the United Kingdom, the USA, France, Norway and Canada. Success in mountain biking is no stranger to the Atherton family as Rachel's brothers, Dan and Gee, have won their fair share of races in a range of races within the discipline.

6. Australia's Stephanie Gilmore won the Women's ASP World Tour Surfing Championships in 2012. What number world championship title did this win represent?

Answer: Five

Gilmore scored 48,400 points during the year putting her comfortably ahead of Sally Fitzgibbons, in second place, with 43,400. She won three events during the course of the year, the Roxy Pro events on the Gold Coast (Australia) and the Cote des Basques, Biarritz (France) as well as the Subaru Pro at Taranaki in New Zealand. These championships added to her victories in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Stephanie first entered world tour events as a seventeen year old, earning a wild card entry into the 2005 Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast, which she went on to win. She would win the Havaianas Beachley Classic the next year, also as a wild card entrant, which qualified her for the world tour in 2007 and she has not looked back since.

7. It's enough to leave you breathless, in which discipline did Brazilian born Bob Burnquist win his ninth career skateboarding gold medal during the 2012 X Games?

Answer: Big Air

Bob's win in the Big Air event was his fourth win in that discipline, having previously been successful in 2007, 2008 and 2011. Including his overall nine medals at the Summer X Games competitions he has also secured six silver medals and six bronze. Bob displayed the rare talent that he is with an amazing stunt that he performed in March of 2006 which was, conveniently, captured on film by the Discovery Channel. Dropping in a forty foot "mega" ramp to enable him to gather sufficient speed, he completed a grind across a forty foot rail and the small task of dismounting was completed as a base jump into the Grand Canyon.

8. In February 2012 organisers began to accept bids from nations to host the second Roller Derby World Cup. Which powerful team won the inaugural championships?

Answer: USA

The Roller Derby World Cup was put together by Blood and Thunder magazine who recruited thirteen teams of amateur skaters from around the globe to contest the event at Downsview Park in Toronto, Canada. Team USA, who boasted such luminaries as Claire D. Way, Fisti Cuffs and Tannibal Lector, were in a league of their own and thoroughly dominated the tournament. They overwhelmed Canada in the final 336 points to 33 after previously destroying Australia in the semi final (532-4) and crushing New Zealand in the quarters (470-8).

9. Go Dutch and see if you can "predict" who took the final yellow jersey at the 2012 Tour of California cycling event?

Answer: Robert Gesink

Robert Gesink's attack on stage seven of the Tour of California earned him a stage win and propelled him to a 46-second lead over David Zabriskie of the USA. The results and times by the end of the next stage did not change giving Robert a well deserved winner's yellow jersey. This would sit well in his wardrobe alongside the red jersey that he won on the Tour of Oman in 2011.
Robert also competed in the 2012 Tour de Suisse finishing in fourth place overall. To complete a remarkable year he also had two overall 6th place finishes in the Vuelta a Espana and Vuelta a Burgos.

10. Sebastien Rolland and Vincent Leys retained the Gordon Bennett Cup in 2012 in which type of race that owes much to the Montgolfier brothers?

Answer: Hot Air Ballooning

The hot air balloon was created in 1782 by the Montgolfier brothers and the Gordon Bennett Cup, or more precisely, Coupe Aeronautique Gordon Bennett, is the world's oldest gas balloon race. It is also the sports' premier event and is often referred to as the "blue ribbon" of aeronautics. Whilst most hot air balloon events are more of a test of accuracy, the Gordon Bennett Cup is less pretentious; its premise is simply "he who flies further than anyone else is the winner". Rolland and Leys, both of France, had won the event twice before, in 2009 in Switzerland and 2007 in France. Leys, however, is no stranger to the winner's circle having won the cup four times previously in partnership with Jean Francois Leys. Rolland and Leys were in the air for 69.02 hours and travelled 1,620.06 kilometres. Both marks were well short of the records for the event at the time; 92 hours for time and 3,400 kilometres for distance.
