Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which National League manager was the first to win four World Series?

Answer: Walter Alston

The Hall of Famer McGraw won three World Series with the New York Giants while winning 10 NL pennants. Alston was with the hardluck Dodger franchise, who had to wait until 1955 to win their first World Series. Alston won three more at the helm of the Dodgers in 1959, 1963, and 1965.
2. In 1978, Bobby Bonds set a Major League Baseball record by striking out 1500 times in a career the quickest. In his 11th season, Bonds reached the 1500-mark. Who broke Bobby's record by striking out 1500 times in his 10th season?

Answer: Adam Dunn

Dunn spent his first eight seasons with the Reds from 2001-2008. He led the league three times with the Reds for striking out the most times in a season. In 2009, Adam signed with the Washington Nationals, then in 2010 broke Bonds' record.
3. The Major League All-Star games began in 1933. Which season saw the game end in a tie between the two teams for the first time?

Answer: 1961

The 1961 game was hosted by Fenway Park in Boston. The American League was on the scoreboard first after the Tigers' Rocky Colavito's home run. The National League scored in the sixth inning when the Braves' Eddie Mathews scored on a hit. The game ended in a 1-1 tie when rains came down extremely hard in the ninth inning.
4. Which National League franchise was the first to have three perfect games thrown against them?

Answer: Dodgers

The Dodgers experienced the first perfect game against them in the 1956 World Series, via pitcher Don Larsen and the Yankees. Their second was a perfecto from Tom Browning of the Reds in a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers in September 1988. The Montreal Expos and Dennis Martinez got into the act in July 1991 by throwing a third perfect game against the Dodgers in a 2-0 win.
5. In 1917, Babe Ruth was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He walked the first batter of a game on four pitches, called the umpire a few names, then was ejected. His relief pitcher was Ernie Shore. Before the first pitch was thrown by Shore, the runner was thrown out trying to steal second base. Shore went on to throw another 26 consecutive outs, him totaling 27. They were playing the Senators. Who was the runner that was walked, then thrown out trying to steal on Shore?

Answer: Ray Morgan

Nobody was credited with a perfect game on this June 23rd day, although 27 consecutive outs were made. Morgan led off the game with a walk, and would be the Senators' only base runner, although his possession didn't last long. Ruth went 24-13 in the season while Shore went 13-10. Shore had only two relief appearances in the season, and received credit for a save in Ruth's game.
6. In 1967, Boston's Carl Yastrzemski was the last batting Triple Crown winner of the 20th Century. He won the award although tying which player in home runs for the season?

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

Yaz hit 44 home runs for the Red Sox in 1967. With one additional swing of the bat, the Twins' Harmon Killebrew could have spoiled Carl's quest for the Triple Crown. Frank Howard of the Senators finished third in home runs in 1967 with 36, and Frank Robinson of the Orioles who batted for the Triple Crown in 1966, finished fourth in the season with 30.
7. Which Major League pitcher set a record by winning 20 consecutive games in 20 consecutive appearances?

Answer: Rube Marquard

Marquard was a pitcher with the New York Giants in 1912. He won 19 in a row as a starter, then came in relief one game and won that also. Rube went 26-11 in the season, but somehow still finished eighth in the MVP voting. He was a 20-game winner three times in his career, retired in 1925, then was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.
8. Which slugger set a record by hitting three grand slam home runs in a four-day span?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The Iron Horse of the Yankees hit his three grand slams on August 29, 31, and September 1 in 1931. Gehrig retired with 23 grand slams in 1939. Tiger Jim Northrup and Larry Parrish of the Rangers later hit three grand slams within a one-week period.
9. The following players all had their jersey number retired. If you took the retired numbers of Ron Santo, added it to the number of Sparky Anderson, and then added that to the number of Andre Dawson, which player would you end up with that also had his number retired?

Answer: Orlando Cepeda

The other three in the question all wore the number 10. Anderson's number was retired with the Reds, Santo's was retired by the Cubs, and Dawson by the Expos. Cepeda played most of his career with the San Francisco Giants and wore the number 30. Orlando won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1958, then the NL MVP in 1967.

The first baseman went to three World Series while winning one. Cepeda was a 1999 Hall of Fame inductee, and the Giants retired his number in the same year.
10. Yankee Lou Gehrig set a record for stringing together 13 consecutive seasons of having 100+ RBIs in each season from 1926-1938. Which Major League player later tied that record?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Foxx tied this record from 1929-1941 with the Athletics and the Red Sox. Gehrig left baseball with 1995 RBIs over 17 seasons, while Foxx had 1922 RBIs over 20 seasons. Both baseball greats were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
