Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pelé scored his 1,000th career goal at Maracanã Stadium, one of the largest sporting venues in which nation?

Answer: Brazil

Found in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Maracanã Stadium was constructed in a clean, recognizable circle and opened to the public for the FIFA World Cup in 1950 and it has, since, grown to become one of the most famous football stadiums in the world. Opening to be the largest stadium of any sort in South America, it played host to the World Cup not only in 1950, but also in 2014; it also hosted the Olympics, including both gold medal soccer matches in 2016 (at which Brazil took the men's team win on home turf) and the opening and closing ceremonies.

Pelé's thousandth career goal, scored here, occurred in 1969. He ended his career with 1,281 registered goals.
2. Found in Pasadena, California, what large college football venue hosts its namesake event on New Year's Day?

Answer: Rose Bowl

One of the world's largest stadiums upon its completion in 1922, the Rose Bowl had its first 'Rose Bowl' football game on New Year's Day 2023, a tradition it would continue to uphold across its long lifetime in Pasadena, California. Home to the Super Bowl on numerous occasions (starting in 1976), the finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, and at one time a venue for the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, it's also a notable concert venue, known for holding some of the largest attendance figures in U.S. event history.
3. The Panathenaic Stadium, seen here, is found in Athens. It's made entirely out of what building material?

Answer: Marble

Interestingly, this stadium, located in Athens, Greece, has been built multiple times, originally as a simple racetrack in the 6th century BCE, then in limestone a few hundred years later, and then again in marble in 144 AD. After centuries of wear and tear it was renovated and restored to glory for the Modern Olympics, a tradition that seemed to hold not only after Athens hosted in 1896, but again for 2004, where it marked the ending of the marathon event. Notably, as the Olympic Flame is carried through Greece and handed off to the proceeding host nation, it makes its way here.
4. The stadium seen here was made for the Montreal Olympics. Which games did they celebrate there in 1976?

Answer: Summer Olympics

Canada has played host to the Olympic Games a handful of times, and while Montreal does get brutally cold, snowy winters, Canada's west is much more suited to the Winter Games, having hosted them in 1988 in Calgary and in 2010 in Vancouver. The 1976 games, however, were a Summer Olympiad, and the Montreal Olympic Park was constructed in the Hochelaga neighbourhood there on a stretch of venue space that would also contain the Biodome and the city planetarium.

Although extremely costly for the city, it would inevitably be home to the world's largest inclined tower, overlooking the stadium itself. It would be used as the home ground for both the Montreal Expos and the Alouettes at times.
5. Built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, this venue was made next to the Atlantic in what major city?

Answer: Cape Town, South Africa

Engineered with a lack of internal supports for its curved, overhanging roof, Cape Town Stadium was constructed to replace a smaller stadium on the edge of the ocean when South Africa was awarded the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and it became one of the centrepieces for the host country. Though it didn't host the finals match (that was The Calabash in Johannesburg), it was one in a number of destinations that received international attention in Africa's first-ever World Cup hosting.

In addition to being a popular concert venue, the stadium was also adopted for use for rugby, notably being home to the Stormers and the WP Rugby Union starting in 2021.
6. Which association football stadium, seen here, is located in London, England?

Answer: Wembley Stadium

Found specifically in the Wembley region of northwest London, this iconic football venue was rebuilt in the 2000s, having originally stood on the site since the 1920s. Because of its central location and the tradition of the sport, it's generally the home of the annual FA Cup Final. In addition to this major event, it's the home field for England's national football team; they won the FIFA World Cup there, when they hosted the event, in 1966.

As for the other options, Coventry is home to the Coventry Arena, Old Trafford is in Manchester, and St. Mary's is in Southampton. All three are British football venues, but none are in the capital.
7. Also known as The 'G, this Melbourne, Australia venue is traditionally home to events for what sport?

Answer: Cricket

Found in Yarra Park, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (or The 'G), isn't only one of the largest cricket grounds in the world, but one of the largest sporting venues in the southern hemisphere, capable of holding more than one hundred thousand attendees. Opening in 1853, the building has undergone numerous renovations to bring it to a modern stature, eventually becoming the home ground for half a dozen Aussie League football teams and several cricket teams.

In 1956, it was one of the key venues for the first-ever Olympic Games held in the southern hemisphere.
8. The unique facade of San Siro makes it one of the most recognizable stadiums in Europe. It hosts which football team?

Answer: AC Milan

Located west of Central Milan, Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (or San Siro) is one of Europe's biggest stadiums and home to one of the most successful football clubs in the country, AC Milan, who have shared the venue with Inter Milan for decades. Having opened in 1926, the venue has played host to more than one iteration of the FIFA World Cup and been a recurring home field for the Italian national football team. Notably it's also one of Northern Italy's largest and most utilized concert venues, having hosted many of the world's most famous artists and musicians.
9. The stadium seen here is in what New York City borough?

Answer: The Bronx

If the logo in the bottom of the image didn't give it away, this venue is none other than Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees and one of the most iconic sports fields in the United States. This modern iteration of the stadium opened in 2009 but the original, at which Babe Ruth played his home games (leading to it being called 'The House That Ruth Built'), was built in 1923, inevitably hosting more than six thousand baseball games.

The new stadium, build on the grounds of the original, became one of the most expensive sports venues ever built with a price tag, then, of $2.3M USD.
10. Both Pelé and Maradona won the FIFA World Cup in what stadium, then Latin America's largest?

Answer: Estadio Azteca

Found in the Coyoacán district of Mexico City, Estadio Azteca is a classic football destination known for hosting numerous high profile events and being the site of key moments in the sport's history. A key venue for the FIFA World Cup in both 1970 and 1986, Maradona managed to hit both his Hand of God goal and his Goal of the Century, giving Argentina the win in the quarterfinals. Argentina would go on to win the cup.

Before both these events, the stadium was used for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
