Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wrigley Field is nestled into the suburbs of what U.S. city?

Answer: Chicago

Found in Chicago's North Side, Wrigley Field opened in 1914 and became the Chicago Cubs' home field only a couple years later, acting as one of the longest-running MLB venues in the United States for more than a century of baseball games. Purchased by the chewing gum manufacturer, William Wrigley Jr., the name 'Wrigley Field' stuck over time, making it one of the most recognizable and unchanging venue names in the sport.

Interestingly, the houses surrounding Wrigley Field have their rooftops outfitted with additional seating, acting as venues from which fans can watch the games, albeit not in Wrigley Field itself.
2. The iconic Calgary, Alberta venue seen here was given what fitting name?

Answer: Saddledome

Built to replace the Stampede Corral, this Calgary venue space opened in 1983 in advance of the Calgary Winter Olympics (in 1988). While McMahon Stadium was used for the opening and closing ceremonies, the Saddledome hosted the high profile hockey and ice skating events on, what was then, the largest Olympic rink venue ever built. Following the games, the Saddledome became a key Calgary venue for the world-famous Calgary Stampede and the home rink for the Calgary Flames NHL team.
3. The UK football team Liverpool FC started playing their home games at which of these parks, seen here, in 1892?

Answer: Anfield

One of the largest stadiums in the UK, Anfield was originally the home field for Everton FC, but became Liverpool FC's in 1892 when the former headed to nearby Goodison Park. Renovated countless times during its more-than-a-century of use, Anfield is somewhat of a football Mecca. Liverpool FC, meanwhile, have been widely celebrated as frequent FA Cup winners and, in 2019, the FIFA Club World Cup champions.
4. Which of these events would take place at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Europe?

Answer: Bullfighting

The Las Ventas Bullring, found in Central Madrid, is the largest such venue of its kind in Europe. Constructed in 1931 for the sole purpose of bullfighting, it's one of the few and final vestiges of the pastime, now considered to be a controversial activity even in its original homeland. Bullfighting, traditionally, has taken place at this venue between spring and autumn though the spot has also been used for tennis and unorthodox live concerts.
5. Located at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in New York City, what arena venue has been the home ground for the Knicks and the Rangers?

Answer: Madison Square Garden

Although the original Madison Square Garden opened at Madison Square (5th and Broadway) in 1879, the modern version ended up getting placed atop Penn Station in 1968, becoming an intentional intersection for sports fans and one of the most recognizable venues in the United States. One of the oldest venues in both the NBA and NHL, Madison Square Garden is also a world-famous concert venue and has appeared in countless films over the decades (including "Space Jam" and "Godzilla" (1998) to name a couple).
6. Built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the stadium here became the largest in Europe. What city is it in?

Answer: Paris

Built in Saint-Denis, slightly north of downtown Paris, Stade de France was purpose-built to become the French national stadium and has since been host to several major moments in French sports. Specifically constructed for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, the French took home field advantage to a finals win against Brazil in that year.

The stadium also acted as the closing ceremony venue for the 2024 Summer Olympics. On a regular basis, the stadium is the home of the French national teams in football and rugby union.
7. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, upon its completion in 1989, became the largest stadium in Asia and one of its lesser visited. It's because it was built in which city?

Answer: Pyongyang

Located on Rungrado Island in the middle of the Taedong River, Rungrado 1st of May Stadium finished construction in 1989 and has, since then, stood as one of the least-visited stadiums of its size in the world, mainly due to the general inaccessibility of North Korea.

This being said, the stadium has been used by North Korean citizens for all manner of sports and it's the home venue for the men's and women's national football teams. In 2007, the stadium hosted what was, then, the largest exhibition of gymnastics events anywhere in the world.
8. Although constructed in 1930 as Fair Park Stadium, this venue in Dallas USA became known by which name (the same as an event held there) in the years to follow?

Answer: Cotton Bowl

Built due east of downtown Dallas, the Cotton Bowl was, at one time, the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys but over time it shifted from being an NFL venue into being a college football (NCAA) haven and a soccer field. This being said, until 2009 it was also the home of the Cotton Bowl Classic, one of the top college football events of the year, and it was held there for more than six decades before it was moved to the AT&T Stadium in nearby Arlington, Texas.

When the United States hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the Cotton Bowl was one of the nine venues used (along with the Rose Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, and Giants Stadium).
9. Ireland's Croke Park is one of the world's premier destinations for which sport?

Answer: Hurling

One of Europe's largest stadiums, this Dublin venue is unique in that most of the sports played there are regional variants or games rarely played anywhere else. Visitors are likely to enjoy rounds of Gaelic football and hurling here, and it's due in part to to the general decision to play non-Gaelic games elsewhere (like Lansdowne Road).

The original version of Croke Park opened in 1884 and, in 1920, it was one of a handful of sites affected during Bloody Sunday in the Irish War of Independence.
10. La Bombonera, seen here, is one of the highest regarded football venues in Argentina. Which sports club makes its home there?

Answer: Boca Juniors

Although La Bombonera is actually known by the name of Alberto José Armando Stadium, this Argentine venue took on the affectionate nickname because of its similarity to a chocolate box. A bright and colourful structure, it's one of the more famous destinations for soccer fans in South America, being the home of the Boca Juniors, one of the leading teams in Argentina's Primera División. Diego Maradona is amongst the former players for this team, and he played there in the 1980s.
