Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Manchester United play their home games at what iconic UK venue?

Answer: Old Trafford

One of the UK's largest football stadiums, Old Trafford was built in 1910 and has since seen numerous renovation efforts to maintain the home of the Manchester United F.C., especially since it was used during WWII and subsequently bombed in a German air raid.

This didn't stop the venue though; restored in the early 1950s, it would become a premier site not only for football, but for rugby and cricket as well. In addition to hosting the FA Cup and the FIFA World Cup (in 1966), Old Trafford acted as a key venue for the London Summer Olympics in 2012.
2. The Gabba, found in the suburb of Woolloongabba, is a cricket ground in what Australian city?

Answer: Brisbane

Although it is colloquially known as The Gabba because of its location, it's actually the affectionate name of the Brisbane Cricket Ground, the home of the Brisbane Lions AFL team (amongst others). Though the massive, round field here is ideal for cricket, the venue has also been used for Australian rules football, rugby, baseball, and even horse racing. Notably, the field here was used for several football matches of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
3. Campo Argentino, found in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, is known as 'The Cathedral of... what sport?'

Answer: Polo

A massive, lengthy stadium found in the Argentine capital, the Campo Argentino de Polo is one of the most revered venues for the sport, having been built there, originally, back in 1928. Although also the former home of the now-defunct Copa de las Américas, it has remained a major landmark for Buenos Aires, acting as a popular outdoor concert venue between its matches.

It remains the desired destination for polo players of the highest level and the final venue of the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo, which started in 1893.
4. The Bird's Nest, seen here, has been used as the chief venue for both a Summer and Winter iteration of the Olympic Games.

Answer: True

Built for the 2008 Summer Olympics, the Beijing National Stadium (perhaps better known as the Bird's Nest) can be found in Central Beijing, only a short distance north of the Forbidden City. Part of a massive sporting complex designed for the event, it would end up being reused for the 2022 Winter Olympics as well. Constructed over the course of six years, this massive venue would end up sharing the park space with the Beijing National Aquatics Center (the 'Water Cube'), the Beijing National Indoor Stadium (the 'Fan'), and the observatory at the Beijing Olympic Tower.
5. This Louisiana landmark has played host to what major U.S. sporting event multiple times?

Answer: Super Bowl

Originally known as the Louisiana Superdome (but since rebranded by corporate sponsors), this iconic venue is located in New Orleans, Louisiana and hosted Superbowl finals in 1978, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1997, 2002, and 2013, each of which resulted in a different champion.

In addition to being the long-time home of the New Orleans Saints, the venue has been the destination for the Sugar Bowl, the oldest U.S. college football event besides the Rose Bowl. The venue has done much more than football though, having been a major battleground in boxing, motocross, soccer, WWE wrestling, and basketball (amongst other sports).
6. Motera Stadium, built to be the largest stadium in the world, hosts cricket matches in which Asian nation?

Answer: India

Found in the West India city of Ahmedabad, Motera Stadium was built in celebration of India's love of cricket, originally opening in the 1980s but being redesigned and expanded upon with renovations in the late 2010s. By the time it reopened in 2020, it was the largest sporting venue in the world, capable of containing more than 130,000 sports fans.

The original stadium played host to ICC World Cup games in 1987, 1996, and 2011, but upon reopening in the 2020s it became the site of the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, hosting the India vs. Australia match (won by the latter).
7. Later renamed the Rogers Center, the Skydome, seen with its retractable roof open here, sits under what landmark?

Answer: The CN Tower

Opening its doors in 1989, the SkyDome became a key venue for Toronto sports, being part of a larger grouping of downtown event locations (like, then, Maple Leaf Gardens) and the new home of the Toronto Blue Jays after their departure from Exhibition Stadium. Known for its then-revolutionary retractable roof, the SkyDome could open to show the adjacent CN Tower rising above.

In the modern day, the surrounding downtown core and its condo buildings fill out more of this sky space. While the stadium has also been used for the Raptors NBA team, the nearby Air Canada Centre (later Scotiabank Arena) would eventually pull their games and most concerts into their space.
8. Built to host the opening match for the 2022 World Cup, Al Bayt Stadium opened in the same year in what Middle Eastern country?

Answer: Qatar

Constructed in Al Khor across a period of seven years in anticipation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Al Bayt Stadium was one of eight venues used for the event and is played host to nine separate matches up to the semifinals. Notably, because the venue was finished a year before FIFA arrived, it was opened for the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, acting as the finals match venue.

When the FIFA World Cup commenced in Qatar, its first match, between the host nation and Ecuador, took place there. Qatar was knocked out during this group stage, losing all three of their games and becoming the first host nation in history to lose their opening match.
9. Stade Louis II, seen here, is home to the national football team for which of these countries?

Answer: Monaco

The home venue and training ground for AS Monaco FC, the site for Stade Louis II has been used for sporting events since the late 1930s while the modern stadium opened there in 1985. Because of Monaco's small size, visitors looking to watch a sporting event really have nowhere else to turn; it's the primary venue for football, basketball, boxing, etc.

Notably, the stadium is also one of the few around the world to be part of the Diamond League. Its own event, the Herculis, is one of the most prestigious track and field invitationals anywhere.
10. One of the oldest baseball stadiums in the U.S., this stadium here, found in Elysian Park, hosts what MLB team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Constructed to become the largest ballpark in the Major League Baseball circuit, Dodger Stadium was built in 1962 and stood to become one of the longest-lasting parks in the U.S. (after Fenway Park and Wrigley Field). Because of its location and general utility, it's been the host venue for nearly all manner of baseball activities including ten World Series, MLB All-Star Games, and an Olympic Games.

The park has also had more than a dozen no-hitters in its history; three of those, all in the 1960s, were by Sandy Koufax.
