Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which season saw the Cobblers stroll to the Division Four title?

Answer: 1986-87

103 goals and 99 points in their league matches ensured the Cobblers secured the title in only Graham Carr's second full season as manager of the club. This was a startling turn around from the 1984-85 season, which saw the Cobblers finish 18th and record their lowest ever Football League attendance of only 942 supporters for a match against Chester City.
2. Name the player sold to Watford during the 1986-87 season.

Answer: Richard Hill

Graham Taylor snapped up Hill to play for the Hornets. However, he was allowed to see out the season at the County Ground and finished as top goalscorer with 29 League Goals. Unfortunately his career at the top was cut short by injury seeing him retire from the game a few seasons later.
3. Which is the correct name for one of the ends of the Cobblers old stadium, The County Ground?

Answer: The Hotel End

The Hotel End was the main end used by the home supporters, however the Spion Kop was still utilised for home support dependant upon the away teams level of demand for tickets.
4. Who scored the winning goal against Coventry City in the third round of the FA Cup in 1990?

Answer: Steve Berry

Steve Berry played non-league football for Northamptonshire UCL side Cogenhoe United in 2007. Begining his professional career at Portsmouth, he played for Sunderland, Newport, Swindon and Aldershot, before joining the Cobblers. The goal against Coventry condemned them to their second successive third round defeat in as many seasons in the FA Cup, as the previous year they had been dumped out of the competition 2-1 by non-league Sutton Utd. Matthew Hanlon scoring the all imporatant goal for Sutton.
5. Name the Ipswich loan signing who lasted only 45 minutes of his debut against Bristol Rovers in the 1987-88 season, before being substituted by manager Graham Carr and sent back to the Tractor Boys.

Answer: Chris O'Donnell

Carr had seen enough in 45 minutes to convince him that he would not require O'Donnell's services again and dispatched him back to his permanent club Ipswich town.
6. Trevor Morely was transfered to Manchester City during the 1987-88 season, but who came to the Cobblers from the Main Road outfit as part of the deal?

Answer: Tony Adcock

Tony Adcock began his football with Colchester United before he moved to Manchester City. He was one of the three players who scored a hat-trick for City in their 10-1 demolition of Huddersfield Town, along with teammates David White and Paul Stewart. He was then signed by Northampton Town in exchange for Trevor Morely, and had two spells at the club with a term at Bradford City sandwiched in-between.
7. Only one team managed to defeat the Cobblers home and away in the league during the 1986-87 season. Who were they?

Answer: Swansea City

A 1-0 win at the County Ground saw Swansea complete the league double over the Cobblers. Colin Pascoe's solitary strike in front of the travelling fans at the Spion Kop saw them complete the second leg of their double.
8. Name the ice cool penalty taker who scored two spot kicks in the FA Cup second round replay against Southend Utd in 1986.

Answer: Dave Gilbert

David James Gilbert began his career at his hometown club of Lincoln City, before being sold to Scunthorpe United. He then had a very successful spell at non-leaguie Boston United where he was spotted by Graham Carr and signed for the Cobblers in 1986.
9. Which non-league club did Graham Carr manage prior to being made the manager of the Cobblers?

Answer: Nuneaton Borough

Carr, a former Northampton Town player in the era that saw the Town rise to the dizzy Heights of Division One, and fall all the way back down again in 9 seasons, managed Nuneaton Borough until 1985 when he left to become manager of the Cobblers.
10. Name the former Cobblers player who played in the 1994 European Cup Winners Cup Final?

Answer: Eddie McGoldrick

McGoldrick moved to Arsenal in 1993, linking up with former Crystal Palace teammate Ian Wright. He made his debut for the Gunners in the Charity Shield against Manchester United on 7 August 1993, and his 38 games in that 1993-94 season included a substitute appearance in Arsenal's European Cup Winners' Cup final 1-0 win over Parma, Alan Smith scoring the goal for the then Highbury team.
