Answer: Headingley

Yorkshire County Cricket Club's main home ground is Headingley Stadium located in Headingley, Leeds. The ground is on the same site as Headingley Rugby Stadium where Rugby League side Leeds Rhinos play. First class cricket was first staged at Headingley in 1890 and the first Test match played there took place in 1899.

Answer: Darren Gough

Michael Vaughan, Ray Illingworth and Joe Root have all been England Test captain but, while he was Yorkshire captain and an important bowler for England Darren Gough never captained England. Ray Illingworth played for Yorkshire from 1951-1968 and from 1982-1983 and was England captain for 31 Test matches during the late 1960s/early 1970s. Michael Vaughan played for Yorkshire from 1993-2009 and captained England in Test, ODI and T20 cricket during the 2000s. Joe Root started his cricketing career at Yorkshire in 2009 and captained England in 64 Test matches from 2017 - 2022.

Yorkshire's first match with first-class status was played against Surrey County Cricket Club at The Oval in London. The match was a three day game taking place between 4-6th June 1863 and ended in a draw.

Matches involving Yorkshire and Lancashire are known as 'roses matches' after the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars in England between the rival houses of York and Lancaster for the English throne which took place in the 15th century. The first roses match took place in 1867 and saw Yorkshire win by 5 wickets at Station Road Cricket Ground in Whalley near Blackburn in Lancashire.
6. What name did Yorkshire adopt as their official nickname for one day and T20 cricket matches, in 2013?

Answer: Vikings

Immediately prior to the 2013 season Yorkshire's one day and T20 sides had been known by the name Yorkshire Carnegie due to a sponsorship deal, however when this deal finished the club sought a new name for the short format sides. The name Vikings was selected due to the Yorkshire region's Viking history, with the city of York having been an important settlement in Viking times.

The club also introduced a Viking mascot called Vinny the Viking.

Geoffrey Boycott was a batter who played over 600 first-class matches and 108 Test matches. Boycott played for Yorkshire from 1962-1986 scoring over 48,000 first-class runs during that time. He made his England Test debut in 1964 and played a total of 108 Test matches as well as 36 One Day Internationals until his international retirement in 1982.

Answer: Hedley Verity

Hedley Verity was a spin bowler who played for Yorkshire from 1930 until the start of World War II. Verity set a record for best bowling figures in first-class cricket when, on 12th July 1932 took all 10 wickets in Nottinghamshire's second innings while only conceding 10 runs. During World War II Verity was a Captain in the Green Howards Regiment of the British Army and died in 1943 after being wounded in action and taken prisoner in Italy.
9. In 1949 did Yorkshire share the County Championship title with Middlesex?

The 1949 County Championship saw Yorkshire and Middlesex level on 192 points at the top of the table and so they both shared the title. The County Championship title was also shared in 1950 and 1977. More recently tie-breakers have been introduced meaning that other factors such as number of wins will be used to separate teams if more than one are equal on points rather than the title being shared.
10. In 1992 Yorkshire signed their first overseas player in Sachin Tendulkar. Which country did Tendulkar represent internationally?

For many years Yorkshire had a policy that only players born in the county could play for the club however the club decided to do away with this policy in the early 1990s and sought to sign an overseas player to add to their squad. Sachin Tendulkar had made his Test debut for India in 1989 at the age of 16 and became Yorkshire's first overseas player at the age of 19.

He scored 1070 runs for Yorkshire in the 1992 season playing in 16 first-class matches. He represented India in 200 Test matches and 463 One Day Internationals scoring over 15000 Test runs and 18000 ODI runs.
