England won 20 of Peter May's 41 Tests as captain, 8 of Colin Cowdrey's 27 Tests, 9 of Ted Dexter's 30, and only five of David Gower's 32.
2. After making his debut against New Zealand, this elegant English batsmen scored nine Test centuries in his career, and also served as an England selector. Who was it?

Answer: Ted Dexter

Dexter scored 52 on debut against New Zealand in 1958 and had a highest Test score of 205 against Pakistan. His career average of 47.89 was the best of these four fine players. He was Chairman of Selectors for England from 1989 to 1993.

May's final Test was against Australia in 1961, Dexter's also against Australia in 1968 and Gower's against Pakistan in 1992.

David Gower played 117 Tests, and hit 18 centuries. His Test career average was 44.25.

In this Test at Edgbaston, England were dismissed for 186, and the West Indies scored 474. When Cowdrey joined May in England's second innings, England were 113 for three, still 175 runs behind. When Cowdrey was dismissed for 154, England lead by 236. May finished on 285 not out, and the Test was drawn, with the Windies 72/7 in their second innings.

Cowdrey took 120 catches in 114 games, Gower took 74 in 117, May 42 in 66 and Dexter 29 in 62. Gower also took 44 catches in ODI's.

Answer: 7

His highest ODI score was 158 against New Zealand in Brisbane in 1982. He played 114 ODI's, three less than the number of Test matches he played.
