Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This team may have been John Denver's favorite team. Which team won the NL pennant in 2007?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

The Rockies needed an extra game against San Diego just to make the playoffs. After winning the game, they would meet up with Phillies and then the Diamondbacks. They earned the right to go to the World Series against Boston. Unfortunately for Rockie fans, the Red Sox swept them. Colorado Rockies: 2007 NL Champions.
2. The year was 1995. Shaquille O'Neal was a young up and comer with the Orlando Magic. O'Neal would lead his team to the NBA Finals where they would lose to which team that also had a future Hall of Fame center?

Answer: Houston Rockets

Underdog Houston, behind center Hakeem Olajuwon, entered the playoffs as the sixth seed in the west. They would beat Utah, Phoenix, and San Antonio to set up a date with Orlando in the finals. The Rockets not only beat the Magic, they swept them 4-0. Houston Rockets: 1994-95 NBA Champions.
3. The 1995 season in college football saw one team show utter domination. This team averaged 52 points per game while maintaining a 39-point margin of victory average. The National Title game was held in January of 1996. Which #1 ranked team marched into the Fiesta Bowl and spanked #2 Florida by 38 points?

Answer: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Led by head coach Tom Osborne and quarterback Tommie Frazier, Nebraska would win the second straight National Title for 1995. Nebraska put up an amazing 77 points against Arizona State. They would score at least 49 points in a game eight times. Nebraska Cornhuskers: 1995 NCAA football National Champions.
4. The 1999 season saw the Tampa Bay Buccaneers advance all the way to the NFC Championship game where they would lose to the high powered Rams offense 11-6. What division did the Buccaneers win that season?

Answer: NFC Central

Tampa Bay's defense carried them all through the regular season and on into the NFC Championship game. When a team has Trent Dilfer and Shaun King at quarterback, there is little an offense can do. They fought for their lives against the Rams and held the Rams offense in check until St. Louis scored a late touchdown to take the lead. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 1999 NFC Central Champions.
5. In 1993, the San Francisco Giants won 103 games but did not win the NL West. Who actually won the NL West?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

1993 saw only two National League teams win 100 games. The Braves and the Giants. Since Atlanta was in the NL West at the time, they won the division and would meet the NL East winners Philadelphia in the NLCS. To ensure that the two best records in the league make the playoffs, MLB created the Wild Card in 1994. Realignment also occurred in 1994, and Atlanta would go to the NL East where they belong. Atlanta Braves: 1993 NL West Champions.
6. The 1994 season marked the end of a four-year Super Bowl run for the Buffalo Bills. What AFC team took over as the representative for the Super Bowl?

Answer: San Diego Chargers

The Chargers started 1994 at 6-0. Although they played .500 ball the rest of the way, they would grab the #2 seed and a first round bye. They would squeak by Miami and Pittsburgh before getting pounded by the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
San Diego Chargers: 1994 AFC Champions.
7. The 2008-09 season belonged to the Los Angeles Lakers as they would win the NBA championship. Which of these teams did they not defeat in the playoffs?

Answer: Dallas Mavericks

When the Lakers entered the playoffs as the top seed in the west, it seemed as if they could not be stopped. What seemed to be was, in fact, reality. With the exception of Houston, the Lakers cake-walked through the playoffs and brought the championship back to Los Angeles. Los Angeles Lakers: 2008-09 NBA Champions.
8. In 1997, there were two teams that shared the NCAA football national title. One was the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Who was the other?

Answer: Michigan Wolverines

Going into the Rose Bowl game against Washington State, Michigan was ranked #1 in both the AP and the coaches polls. Nebraska, ranked #2, was paired up with #3 Tennessee in the Orange Bowl. Couple Nebraska's trouncing of Tennessee with Michigan's narrow victory over #8 Washington State and you end up with a split of the National Title. Michigan was #1 in the AP poll and Nebraska ended up #1 in the coaches poll. Michigan Wolverines: 1997 NCAA football Co-National Champions.
9. The 2000-01 NHL season was an eventful one for hockey. Mario Lemieux returned from retirement, two new expansion teams were introduced, and a franchise won the Stanley Cup for the second time in their history. What team was it that would call themselves champs?

Answer: Colorado Avalanche

The Avalanche were the top seeded team in the Western Conference. In the west bracket, only the Kings gave Colorado some competition. They took them all the way to seven games. The Avalanche also took out the Canucks and the Blues before beating the New Jersey Devils in seven games to take the Stanley Cup. Colorado Avalanche: 2000-01 NHL Champions.
10. 1995 marked the first year this team reached a World Series in over three decades. Which team was it?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The 1995 Indians were a juggernaut. They went 100-44 in the regular season. They swept the Red Sox in the first round of the playoffs and then sent Seattle home in the ALCS. However, this would be no fairy tale season for the Indians as the old cliche that says great pitching beats great hitting came true. Atlanta, behind their three headed monster of Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz shut down the Indians enough to win the World Series in six games. Cleveland Indians: 1995 AL Champions.
