Elena Vesnina (Russia) defeated Venus Williams (USA) 6-1 6-3, but lost in the 2nd round to Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) 6-2 6-1. Venus Williams is the sister of the famous player Serena Williams and together they dominated tennis in the early 2000s. Elena Vesnina also plays doubles, with the Indian player Sania Mirza.
The Italian Flavia Pennetta also went out in the first round to fellow Italian Camila Giorgi. Marion Bartoli suffered an upset at the hands of Mirjana Lucic.

Rafael Nadal was ranked No. 2 but suffered a shocking defeat to Lukas Rosol, who was ranked 100, in a five set thriller. The scoreline was 6-7 (9-11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. After this Nadal suffered a string of injuries and missed both the US Open and the Australian Open. Lukas Rosol lost in the 3rd round to Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets.

The other players mentioned lost in the 2nd round as well.

Maria Sharapova came into the Wimbledon Championship as the World No.1 after having defeated Sara Errani ealier in June 2012 for her first French Open title (to complete her career Grand Slam, having won Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006 the Australian Open in 2008).
However, she lost to the German Sabine Lisicki in straight sets in the fourth round. The scoreline was 6-4 6-3. Lisicki didn't survive long and lost in the quarter finals to fellow German Angelique Kerber.

Answer: Yaroslava Shvedova

Yaroslava Shvedova (born in Moscow but representing Kazakhstan), was a wildcard in the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. She went on to become the first player in a Grand Slam Tournament to win a golden set; against the 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani in the 3rd round. She won the match by 6-0,6-4 but lost in the 4th round to Serena Williams by 6-1 2-6 7-5.

Novak Djokovic had a fantastic year of 2011 where he won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. However, in 2012 he lost to Roger Federer 6-3 3-6 6-4 6-3 in the semi-finals. Mardy Fish was eliminated in the Fourth Round by Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. David Ferrer defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in the 4th round but then lost in the quarter-finals to Andy Murray.

Answer: Marray and Nielsen won in straight sets

Jonathan Marray and Frederick Nielsen from Great Britain and Denmark respectively, prevailed against Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in five sets to emerge as the 2012 Men's Wimbledon Double champions. The scoreline was 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7(5-7), 6-3.

They were the first wildcards to enter the Wimbledon Men's Doubles finals and win the Championship. Along the way they also beat the Bryan brothers in four sets in the semi-finals. With this win Jonathan Murray was the first British Player since 1936 to win the Wimbledon's Men's Double's final (also, his world ranking increased to 21, which also made him Britain's No. 1).

Serena Williams won her 14th singles title after defeating Agnieszka Radwanska, who was the first Pole ever to reach a Grand Slam Singles final, by 6-1,5-7,6-2. Serena also equalled her sister Venus in winning five Wimbledon titles. She went on to win the Gold Medal in the Summer Olympics, which were held in similar court conditions in London a month later, and became only the second woman to win a career Golden slam in singles after Steffi Graf in 1988. Victoria Azarenka was defeated by Serena in the semi-finals where Azarenka was at the receiving end of 24 aces (a Wimbledon record). Petra Kvitova was the defending champion who lost in the Quarter finals to Serena Williams while Ana Ivanovic lost to Victoria Azarenka in the 4th round.

Andy Murray was the first British Player to reach the Men's Singles final of Wimbledon since Bunny Austin in 1938, but he lost to Roger Federer by 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. However, Murray got the chance to play Federer again in the Summer Olympics one month later and this time he defeated him in straight sets to win the Gold Medal in tennis. Murray had beaten Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the semi-finals. Mikhail Youzhny lost to Roger Federer in the quarter-finals while Andy Roddick was eliminated in the 3rd round by David Ferrer.

Roger Federer, also known as the Swiss Maestro or more poularly as FedEx, became the World No.1 after emerging as the champion in the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. His previous title was won in 2010 (the Australian Open). By becoming the World No. 1 again he eclipsed the previous record of most weeks at No. 1 set by Pete Sampras at 286 weeks. Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe were also former World No.1 for 101, 170 and 270 weeks respectively.

The Williams sisters from the USA, Serena and Venus, won their 13th Grand Slam doubles title by defeating Czech Republic's Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka by 7-5 6-4. The moment was special for Serena as she had also won the singles title earlier in the day. Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber were eliminated by the Williams sisters in the semi-finals.

However, as consolation, Liezel Huber won the mixed doubles title with partner Bob Bryan against Leander Paes and Elena Vesnina by 7-5 3-6 6-3. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci were eliminated by Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the quarter-finals. Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova were also eliminated by the Williams sisters; in the 2nd round.
