Home hopes were dashed early when two-time winner lost in the second round to fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who himself lost in the fourth round to the new American sensation . Other early casualties were the Norwegian , seeded four, and eleventh seed - the Canadian lost in the first round to Michael Mmoh, who had come through qualifying.

The quarter-finals saw the Italian prevail against Roman Safullin while the Russian , seeded number seven, lost to the eventual runner-up. Number six seed, from Denmark, also departed at this stage defeated by the man who would go on to win the title.

The number three seed, another Russian lived up to his seeding by reaching the semi-final before losing. This left the final to be contested between the top seed and number two seed with victory going to the number one.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Andy Murray won the Wimbledon championship in both 2013 and 2016, but has suffered with injuries since, including having pioneering surgery on his hip. Tsitsipas proved too strong and there are doubts that Murray will play at Wimbledon again. Although the victor won his next round easily, he then ran into Christopher Eubanks, who made a real impact at this year's Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Medvedev.

Casper Ruud was expected to do much better, as evidenced by his seeding, but fell to Liam Broady in round two. Ruud has made no secret of his dislike for playing on grass, though. Auger-Aliassime had suffered injury problems and loss of form, so his defeat was less surprising. Rublev ran up against Novak Djokovic while Rune was defeated by Alcaraz. Medvedev went out at the semi-final stage, losing to Alcaraz while Djokovic was too strong for Sinner in the other semi.

The seedings proved correct, eventually, with Alcaraz prevailing 1-6, 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, although it looked unlikely when the first set proved so one-sided. Alcaraz, at the age of only twenty, becomes the youngest winner since Boris Becker in 1985.
