Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first-ever World Series was in the 1900s decade in 1903. There was one World Series that did not take place in that decade, due to the American and National League's front offices that could not agree on the format and monies of the games. Which year was a World Series absent in the decade?

Answer: 1904

It could have been the second series in 1904, but it would never come about. The fans were in anticipation to see the NL Champion Giants who won 106 games, take on the winner of the first World Series, the Boston Americans. It would have pitted pitchers Christy Mathewson, Joe McGinnity, and Dummy Taylor, against the American's Cy Young and Bill Dinneen. Because this never happened, 1903 would be Young's only series appearance.
2. In the 1910s, three teams would go to four World Series in the decade. The New York Giants lost all their four, the Philadelphia Athletics went 3-1 in the decade, and which other team that won all four of their World Series chances?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

None of the others saw a World Series in the 1910s. The Red Sox defeated the 1912 Giants, the 1915 Phillies, the Brooklyn Robins in 1916, then the Cubs in 1918. It would be another 86 years before the Red Sox stood on top of the promised land in 2004.
3. Babe Ruth would play his first game as a Yankee in 1920, and would hopefully define the decade for the team. The Yankees' first World Series came in 1921. How many total World Series did they go to in the 1920s?

Answer: 6

They split the series with three wins and three losses. Their first series crown came in 1923 against the Giants, after the Giants put them down in 1921 and 1922. After the acquisition of Babe Ruth for the 1920 season, the Yankees finished three games back of the AL Champion Indians.
4. The New York Yankees dominated the World Series in the 1930s. Going to and winning five in the decade, they lost only three games total. One player in the decade also stood out, as he set a record for doubles in a single series, and would still have the record 70 years later. Who was this record-setter?

Answer: Pete Fox

The others never saw a World Series in the 1930s. Fox hit six doubles for his winning Cardinals in the 1934 series against the Tigers. In those 70 seasons that followed, nobody would hit more than four. The Yankees still had all the limelight by going to four consecutive series from 1936-1939. One of the most famous World Series in history was that in 1932, when the great Babe Ruth "called his shot" against pitcher Charley Root.
5. The Yankees were still shining in the 1940s in the American League, going to four World Series. The National League was dominated by a team that also went to four World Series, and they won 100+ games in a season three times. Which team was this that rostered Enos Slaughter, Joe Garagiola, and Mort Cooper?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The other teams did not exist in the 1940s. The Cardinals also had Dizzy Dean, Red Schoendienst, and Stan Musial. St. Louis went to three consecutive series from 1942-1944, defeating the Yankees, then losing to the Yankees, then defeating the Browns. They were also victorious in 1946 against the Red Sox.
6. The World Series in the 1950s saw its first perfect game, thrown by Don Larsen of the Yankees in 1956. The Yankees went to the promised land eight times in the decade. The Yankees also had a player who tied the World Series record for most hits in a series. Who was this?

Answer: Billy Martin

Martin went to five World Series with the Yankees between 1951-1956, then found himself as a Kansas City Athletic in 1957. In the 1953 series against the Dodgers, Billy hit seven singles, one double, two triples, and two home runs for a .500 average.
7. To begin the 1960s, the Yankees were still having their way in the American League, going to five consecutive World Series in the decade. The Pittsburgh Pirates put the brakes on them in 1960 with Bill Mazeroski's famous walk-off home run to win the series. The Yankees would bounce back with Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle to win the next two series in 1961 and 1962. To prevent a three-peat by the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers were shocked by a World Series skunking in 1963 by which team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Tigers and Orioles were in the American League as were the Yankees. The heavily-favored Yankees went up against Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and the Dodgers. The Dodgers allowed only four Yankee runs in the entire series, two via a Tom Tresh home run, and another by a solo shot by Mickey Mantle.

The Yankees batted .171 in the series, mainly due to the 37 strikeouts provided by Koufax, Drysdale, Johnny Podres, and Ron Perranoski. All Dodger starters threw complete games, except for Podres who needed Perranoski in relief for 2/3s of the ninth inning in game two.

It was a Dodger domination. The Yankees defeated the Reds in 1961, then the Giants in 1962.
8. The Big Red Machine of Cincinnati went to four World Series in the 1970s, but the show was stolen by the Oakland Athletics, who three-peated from 1972-1974 against the Reds, Mets, and Dodgers. Manager Dick Williams helmed the team in their first two series victories. Which manager took them to their third in 1974?

Answer: Alvin Dark

Dark picked up the pieces of Oakland's free-agency issues after the miser, Charlie Finley, didn't want to pay his players for what they were worth. Dark had managed the Giants for four seasons, the Royals for two, then Cleveland for another four before taking the helm of the Athletics.
9. The 1980s were brought into view in a proper way. The Philadelphia Phillies won their first World Series title in 1980. Their third baseman Mike Schmidt, won the series MVP award. Also in the decade, Major League baseball saw for the first time, more than one player tie for a World Series MVP award. In addition to that, it was three players who tied for it. Who were these three players?

Answer: Dodgers- Ron Cey , Pedro Guerrero , and Steve Yeager

It was the 1981 series that pitted the Los Angeles Dodgers against the New York Yankees. The Dodgers had the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young winner in Fernando Valenzuela, who brought his Fernando Mania to the series. The Dodgers won the series four games to two, and the three shared the MVP award.
10. The World Series of the 1990s was brought in by a skunking provided by the Cincinnati Reds to the Oakland Athletics. Which team in the decade not only won their first World Series championship, but won the title in two consecutive seasons?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto franchise began in 1977. They won consecutive World Series in 1992 and 1993 against the Braves and Phillies. The 1992 series MVP was catcher Pat Borders of the Blue Jays. The 1993 MVP was former 15-season Milwaukee Brewer, who was in his first season with the Blue Jays in 1993. He was Paul Molitor.
