A Matter of Loaf and Death Trivia Quiz

On Christmas Day 2008, the 'Wallace and Gromit' episode, "A Matter of Loaf and Death", drew 14.4 million viewers to BBC 1, making it the most-watched Christmas Day TV programme for several years. I was one of them, and decided it deserved a quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first victim we saw singing before he was attacked?

Answer: If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake

The twelfth victim, who we find rejoiced in the name 'Baker Bob,' was merrily singing 'If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake', when he was hit over the head with his own rolling pin. There have been many versions of this popular song since it was published in 1950, including one by the British artist Dame Gracie Fields.

In this programme, Wallace and Gromit have become bakers, running the Top Bun traditional bakery, with 'Dough to Door delivery'. Gromit reads all about the murder while he's working in the bakery - before he wakes Wallace up at 5 a.m.
2. What is not something available from Gromit's 'petrol pump'?

Answer: 5 star

Gromit's pump dispenses diesel, 4 star, unleaded, tea, coffee and milk. He fills the van before giving Wallace a cup of tea - which he says is 'a lovely cuppa, but with a slight dieselly aftertaste'. Five star petrol (gasoline) was 101 octane and hasn't been sold in the UK since the 80s. Four star leaded petrol was withdrawn from general sale in the UK on 1st January 2000.

The cassette player in the van makes toast, so Wallace gets a nice breakfast as they travel!
3. What bakery product does Wallace use on his knees to stop the 'runaway' bike?

Answer: Wholemeal fruit teacakes

Leaping agilely onto the front of Piella Bakewell's bike, Wallace gets Gromit to throw him some wholemeal fruit teacakes as brakepads between his knees. Unfortunately this doesn't slow them down enough (Wallace feels granary rolls would have been better) and they shoot into the zoo, where Piella's poodle Fluffles is only saved from being eaten by a crocodile by a strategically wedged baguette, wielded by Gromit.

A pikelet is a Northern delicacy, a sort of crumpet.
4. Piella Bakwell turns out to be a heart-throb of Wallace's from the days when she advertised 'Bake-O-Lite' in a balloon. Much to Gromit's displeasure, they start dating. What is not something they do together?

Answer: Stroll through Central Park in the rain

While poor Gromit is working his paws off in the bakery, Wallace is swanning around with his lady-love - and very silly he looks tangoing in a sleazy Italian restaurant with a rose between his teeth! Gromit is trying to sleep while the strains of 'Unseen Melody' are echoing around the house. A great sight gag in this scene is Gromit's poster for 'Citizen Canine'.
5. Piella, while applying a 'woman's touch' to the home of the 'slovenly boys' (which seems to consist of filling the place with ghastly vases of roses and pink everywhere) throws away all Gromit's things. Luckily Fluffles retrieves them from the bin. What comic, a canine pun on a famous British comic that featured 'Dan Dare', is clearly visible?

Answer: Beagle

Dan Dare was featured in the 'Eagle'. Gromit reads the 'Beagle'. I must see if I can get a subscription! 'Dandy', 'Beano' and 'Look and Learn' are/were all famous British comics. Also visible in the 'chucked-out' box were a record of 'Puppy Love' by Doggy Osmond and a record by McFlea - perhaps they're a Puppy Band?
6. Gromit is ordered to return the purse Piella accidentally left at their house (Wallace makes him go as it's pouring with rain!). Whilst at Piella's place he discovers her photo album of all her victims, plus her grisly display of souvenirs (their aprons and hats on tailors' dummies). He also learns, to his horror, that Wallace is penciled in as victim number 13. Where does Gromit spend an uncomfortable night to avoid discovery?

Answer: Suspended from the chandelier

She keeps the Polaroids in a padded pink (what else?) album with a heart on the front. Having knocked all the dummies over, Gromit has to move fast to avoid detection, and finishes up hanging from her large circular chandelier. He eventually falls asleep and off, and would have landed right on top of Piella, had she not been up early!
7. Having failed to warn Wallace (Piella burns the evidence!), Gromit sets out to protect him. Who wrote Gromit's book 'Electronic Surveillance for Dogs'?

Answer: B. A. Lert

Gromit is desperately trying to protect Wallace, so sets up a scanning portal. Don't you just love those silly titles? 'The Unknown Rodent by A. Nonny Mouse', 'Singing Without An Orchestra by A. K. Pella' etc. The first scan reveals a ladle, that Gromit locks away in a shed marked WMD, with all the household knives, razors and anything potentially harmful.
8. Fluffles foils the next attempt on Wallace's life, and Piella flings her engagement diamond at Wallace. She then appears with a bomb in their 'reconciliation cake' - which Gromit tries to dispose of. His first attempt was thwarted by the presence of ducks and his second by a group of nuns marching to save something - what?

Answer: Kittens

Under the first window were ducks on a pond, under the second, nuns marching to 'Save the kittens' and from the third window, Gromit appeared to be willing to chuck the bomb into Yorkshire (Bad Dog!). The bomb remains in the building, and we discover that Piella's bitterness towards bakers is rooted in her being dropped from 'Bake-O-Lite', because of her weight.
9. Who forced Piella through the window, using Wallace's fork lift?

Answer: Fluffles

Fluffles drove the oven-glove slapping fork-lift which forced Piella to the bay where she caught a balloon - that she was far too heavy for! Unfortunately, she was eaten by the crocodile when the balloon sank under her weight.
10. In 'A Matter of Loaf and Death' did Gromit finish up with Fluffles?

Answer: Yes

Although they said 'Goodbye', Fluffles was crying on the drive when the pair went out on their round. Wallace said 'There's always room for a litle one' and Fluffles put 'Puppy Love' on the player as they drove off, and Wallace warned Gromit to keep both paws on the wheel! I hope you enjoyed the quiz as much as I enjoyed the programme! All feedback welcome!
