Somewhere in Western Europe in the year 42 A.D., a woman named Ivy screamed in labour pains in a hay-filled barn. In her distress, she unsheathed a knife and plunged it into her stomach, dragging it up to remove not one, but two babies from her open belly. In the trauma of this act, the three of them passed away in the night.

It wasn't until morning that they were found by a black-robed figure adorned in feathers and ornate jewels. When the figure brought the trio back to life with the wave of their hand, Ivy could only ask "who are you?", leading them to slowly remove their hood.

In Brooklyn, New York City in 2013, Adeline Harding awoke to her husband, Dex, providing her a surprised bouquet of flowers and a new puppy, Oz. Adeline was surprised, but disappointed that they didn't talk about the purchase first, especially since she planned on working at the restaurant more and more. Adeline claimed that she wasn't ready for a dog, and more than that, they weren't ready as a couple.

The argument turned into the typical discussion about kids. She wasn't ready for that either, even if Dex was.

Adeline arrived at her new restaurant, Hestia, and headed to the kitchen to try some new recipes for her opening night menu. Giving a pep talk to her staff before doors opened, she reminded them that she named the restaurant after the Greek goddess of the heart and the home. As she explained her reasoning for carrying on the tradition of ancient domesticity, she glanced at the window and saw a feather-clad, masked figure staring in the front window.

After a successful evening, Adeline stayed back to clean up the restaurant and, when she was left alone, she went back to the storage closet and crawled through a hidden crawlspace to perform an ancient ritual.

When Adeline emerged from her storage room she emerged into the kitchen to find her gas stoves left on. Unnerved, she walked out to the dining room to find someone waiting for her-- Sonia, her sister. Sonia complimented her on the restaurant but brandished a knife, complaining that she missed being the evil twin in her life. Though Adeline asked her sister to leave, Sonia promised she would if she beat her in a knife game.

Adeline revealed to Sonia that she would never come back into the fold; she was happy with her life. The problem was that, according to Sonia, the others needed her. Sonia asked if it was worth it, and when Adeline said it was because their mission was wrong. The game ended when Adeline accidentally jammed the knife into her hand. As Sonia departed, Adeline removed the knife, fainting from the pain.

In Galway, Ireland in the year 1243 AD, Adeline told her mother that she was no longer interested in helping the others as lying was equal to hurting. Ivy suggested that lying was for the greater good, but Adeline claimed it was only for one's good. It's why Ivy used her powers to cast Adeline back to the opposite wall.

Ivy reminded both of her children that she tore herself open to bring them into life. Born into this world, they would all be forced to live right, or happy, and that wasn't always going to be an easy choice. After apologizing, Ivy brought her daughters before her and declared them blood-bound, together forever, starting the trio into a ritualistic chant.

Dex spoke to Talia about the events that befell his wife at her restaurant and Talia, part of the coven herself, brushed off his concerns, suggesting that she likely just fell and hurt herself while cleaning up. After all, while Adeline's sister was known to be problematic, it seemed like a stretch for her to appear out of nowhere. Dex knew that Adeline was afraid of her family, or so she claimed. She never even revealed their names to him.

Dex informed his father that he and Adeline would not be joining them that evening on account of the accident. Hanging up the phone, Dex's father lamented that his son's life was in chaos, partly because they'd enabled the pair for too long. His mother, however, didn't feel quite the same about the situation. It's why Dex Sr. quickly knocked her out with chloroform and set to work.

While shopping for wedding rings, Talia informed a shocked Adeline that she sold her start-up for $1.2 billion. With the free time and the extra cash, her first order of business would be supporting Dex who, in light of being cut off financially by his father, could use a gallery to showcase his paintings. Talia suggested that, if Adeline would just let her, she could make all of his dreams come true, and that would benefit the both of them, especially with the debt they'd accrued opening Hestia. Cautiously, Adeline asked why she would do such a thing; Talia responded it was because she loves Adeline and wants her to have it all.

While working one afternoon, Adeline was visited by Nicolette, much to her distress. She asked Nicolette to leave, but the conversation still happened; her former friend told her she was brave to try leaving the group, just as her sister claimed, but there were other ways to live. The conversation did not end on a positive or reconciliatory note.

After work, Adeline visited a pharmacy with the uncanny urge to get her hands on a pregnancy test. Her worries were confirmed when the test came back positive.

Adeline and Dex enjoyed dinner with Talia to celebrate the decision to fund and open the Harding Gallery, and it's there that they took a photograph that Anna Alcott would come to discover in Talia's home mere months later. After the photo was taken, Adeline would notice Ivy seated in the background, but turning around she would find no one sitting at the bar.

After Talia and her fiancee left the restaurant, Adeline sent Dex on his way so she could finish cleaning up alone. Before he left though, he gave her one last kiss, reminding her that she was the love of his life.

When Dex returned home, he found the pregnancy test in the trash. He tried to call Adeline, but she had her phone turned off, having crawled into her hidden room to perform a ritual. It's why he called his parents instead. The phone was off the hook there too, so he went to visit them.

It was a mistake on his part. When Dex entered his parents' house, he found the cultists removing blood from his mother's arms and his father engaging in sexual acts with one of the black-garbed women. As they knocked him out, Dex Sr. asked that his son's memory be erased.

While performing her ritual, Adeline heard the chanting awaiting her in her dining room and she emerged to find four women, each dressed in their dark robes, standing in the candlelight and prepared to meet her. Ivy stepped forward to meet her daughter, drug her with a syringe, and strap her to a table.

Upon awakening, Adeline reminded her captors that she renounced her dark family, but Ivy claimed that, as a powerless woman, she would be unable to stop what came next. As Talia removed her own mask, revealing herself to be part of the group, the women informed Adeline that in her absence, Dex would be partnered with a new wife who would bear, unto him, the purest product possible.

With a waiting dagger, Ivy cut into Adeline's womb, reaching in and removing the young child already growing within. The woman bathed themselves in her blood, soaking their skin for eternal beauty, before dousing Adeline and gasoline and setting her, and the restaurant, ablaze.
