Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nasty Nick wrote secret notes. Anna used to be a nun. Mel kissed two people. Darren likes chickens.

The very first UK "Big Brother" was in the year 2000. It was against the rule to discuss nominations or to own a pen and paper but Nick had snuck some in and was passing notes to sway nominations. When he was discovered, the house acted like he was a murderer and Craig confronted Nick, going on to win for his valiant stance, while Nick was thrown out. Hard to believe how shocked we all were at the time, but we were also shocked that Mel had kissed two boys while in there. Nothing else, just a peck, but they were innocent times.

In a game where they had to tell two lies and a truth, Anna said she used to be a nun and no one guessed it was the truth. The first Big Brother had a chicken coup to provide eggs. Darren made a pet of one of them, calling her Marjorie.
2. "I like blinking I do". Helen and Paul. Josh ruffles feathers. Narinder & Bubble. Penny & Stuart.

Brian Dowling made all his housemates laugh with his witty one liners, and he possibly broke many a glass ceiling for gay people when he won the show with overwhelming popularity. He has since forged a successful career as a television presenter. He went on to win "The Ultimate Big Brother" receiving the title "Ultimate Housemate" and took over presenting the show when it moved channel.

We tuned in to watch Welsh hairdresser Helen "I like blinking, I do" Adams, and English car-salesman Paul "I've lived my life like an international popstar" Clark, flirt their way through some tentative dates. They became the show's first real romance and stayed together for five years before going their separate ways.

Narinder and Bubble lasted a long time because of their jokey behaviour with Brian. Penny and Stuart fought from day one and were soon turned out.

Josh entered the house late. Brian briefly reacted badly, jealously guarding his place in the group against the new gay man. Matt Lucas from the comedy show "Little Britain" says this was the inspiration for his smash hit comedy character, Dafydd, "The Only Gay in the Village".
3. Jade Goody asks "Am I minging?" Sandy escapes. Alison Hammond breaks a table.

Probably the most famous BB contestant of all time has been Jade Goody who entered the house as young, naive, and foolish, and from a difficult childhood. She was persistently booed and mocked by the time of her eviction, only to turn it all into a career of reality TV and to amass a fortune and a loyal fanbase. She famously and tragically died very young, at only 27. She left her young sons a reported £3 million inheritance for their education, which is an incredible feat on her behalf. Her son Bobby appeared as a celebrity contestant on "Strictly Come Dancing" 2023.

Alison Hammond was a popular contestant who famously broke a table while dancing on it, she went on to be a mainstream TV presenter.
In the house, she became close friends with winner Kate Lawlor, who went on to become a mainstream radio presenter.

The Scotsman, Sandy, made a daring escape across the roof after urinating in the kitchen bin, and is probably still on the run somewhere.
4. An exchange with "Big Brother Africa". A bomb scare. Jon Tickle gets voted out, and back in again.

The difficult 4th series! It was all quite dull compared to other years. Even sending Cameron to Africa for the weekend and introducing Gaetano, a "Big Brother Africa" contestant, into the house didn't spice it up much. A real bomb scare was the highlight. The public opted to vote for the nicest people. Cameron Stout, a devout Christian from Orkney, won.

Jon Tickle was the house brainbox/nerd and was nominated by his housemates for eviction every single week. When he was eventually voted out, the public voted for him to go back in with immunity from eviction. He went on to present a TV show called "Brainiac: Science Abuse".
5. The original Fight Night! Stu and Michelle under the table. "No naked jacuzziNESS".

What a series! There was an eviction twist where Michelle and Emma found themselves voted into a secret room to spy on the rest of the house. When the two girls entered back into the house, they'd heard all the negative things said about them and it was only a matter of time before a fight broke out, with bottles, punches, and custard pies being thrown. Every housemate jumped in to have their say. Just as Victor and Emma looked like they would genuinely throttle each other, the livestream was cut and security had to be sent in.

Early on, Michelle had picked Stu as her love interest and was not impressed when secretly watching Shelley suggest he jump into the jacuzzi naked. Eventually, Michelle sealed the deal with Stu by tricking him under the table where the cameras couldn't see them but they forgot the microphones were still on.

Nadia was a very popular winner. She was the first transgender person to appear on the show but she opted to keep it a secret for the first while. She had made everyone laugh with her quick wit and terrible temper.
6. Makosi pregnancy scare. Kinga and a wine bottle. Maxwell and Saskia.

Beautiful Zimbabwean Makosi liked to stir up trouble but her claim that Newcastle barber, Anthony, had made her pregnant in the jacuzzi took it too far. Neither Anthony nor "Big Brother" were convinced sex had happened.
Meanwhile, Kinga was not having Makosi get all the attention and, in a bid to prove her prowess, showed Anthony a trick with a wine bottle. The less said about that, the better, but let's just say no one felt comfortable.
There was a case of love/showmance with Maxwell and Saskia, and Craig got a big crush on Anthony which was not welcome by Anthony but very funny to watch.
7. "Who is she? Who IS SHE?!" Nikki's tantrums. Aisleyne. "Get Grace Out".

This was an iconic episode introducing us to: the winner, Pete, a nice guy punk with Tourette's; Nikki Grahame, queen of the tantrums; Glen the sweet 18-year-old from Wales; Aisleyne "you better know yourself, little girl" Horgan; and a host of other huge characters.

Couples Grace and Mike, and Sezer and Imogen, were the hot girls and cool boys, or "plastics" and "mean girls" as one of their housemates dubbed them. Grace was evicted to huge boos and famously threw water over the sexy new female housemate, Suzie, while leaving, who had said "You're certainly no lady, Grace". "Nor are you, you moose!" replied Grace.

Nikki's reaction to the new housemate Susie was a wild tantrum in the diary room shouting "who is she?!"

Since the show, Nikki enjoyed her Big Brother fame and returned to future "Big Brother" series as a celebrity guest, but tragically lost her ongoing battle with anorexia and died in 2021.

In 2011, Imogen was implicated in an affair with a married top footballer who could not legally be named at the time, but we can legally say it now. It was Ryan Giggs.

Grace and Mike got engaged just weeks after the show finished and in 2023 were still happily married with four children.
8. Chanelle + Ziggy = Chiggy. Charley fights with everyone. The twins. Emily's racist remark.

It started with a twist, all housemates were female! Then on the third day, one man, Ziggy, an ex-boyband member, was released into the lion's den, I mean entered the house, and there was big competition for his attention. Chanelle won, but after a couple of weeks of passion and fights, with rival Charley too, they broke up when he said the classic "it's not you, it's me", and Chanelle lost her temper in the diary room.

Emily Parr made a comment that a rapper might make, but coming from a white woman towards Charley, a black woman, even in the context of a lyric, looked too bad not to punish and Emily was immediately removed from the house. This was the year that had earlier had an international racism row in Celebrity Big Brother between Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty, it was far too touchy a topic to ignore.

The eventual winner, Brian, made friends with the twins, Sam(antha) and Amanda, who came joint second. They were all three very sweet but not always very sharp. The twins believed a "Big Brother" trick that they had psychic twin powers, and Brian confessed he did not know much about William Shakespeare except that he was a film director.
9. Luke and Bex. Rex and Nicole. First blind contestant, Mikey. Fight Night 2.

The couples: Rex had gleefully entered the house not knowing a secret his girlfriend, Nicole, had kept from him: she was entering the house too! He was shocked and wrong-footed from the start. Mario and Lisa were a married couple who tried to pretend that they weren't.
Luke and Bex were an unlikely cute romance that developed its own fanbase, but they split up acrimoniously 18 months after the show and didn't talk to each other for a decade.

Fight Night 2: Rex damaged Jennifer's painting in a task and a discussion about it escalated very quickly with everyone fighting with everyone else about separate issues. Despite "Big Brother"'s instructions to isolate, there were not enough rooms to separate everyone that needed separating!

The winner: Mikey, a 33-year-old Scottish contestant who had lost his sight during an operation when he was 23. He was a very popular runner-up having never been put up for eviction by his housemates. It was his kind friend in the house though, Rachel Rice, who won the show having survived several public votes.
10. Famous ex-housemates visited. Noirin shaved her eyebrows. Deed poll name changes: Halfwit & Dogface.

The opening twist was that they had to win their place in the house first. Freddie and Sophie had to change their names by deed poll and be legally known as "Halfwit" and "Dogface" in order to win entry to the main house. Noirin shaved her eyebrows off and had to draw on glasses and a mustache each day with a permanent marker to win her housemate status.

To celebrate the tenth year of Big Brother, previous housemates returned, just as visitors though. These included Rex, Nikki, and Makosi. Their appearance fees went in memoriam to the Jade Goody Trust Fund.

The winner was glamour model Sophie "Dogface" Reade, with the highest percentage of votes for a winner in any series. She invested in a series of enhancements to further her career and took a contract with "Ann Summers" and modeled for "Playboy".

At the end of the series, it was announced that the following year would be the final "Big Brother", Channel 4 choosing not to continue the contract, and no other channel choosing to pick it up.
11. "Randy Mare". Surfer dude John James. Talking cupboard and secret tasks. Posh Ben. Angry Shabby. Winner joins celebrity series.

Josie and John James had a slow-burn attraction the whole series, resulting in Josie many times calling herself a "Randy Mare". It was the romance of the year.
The enchanted chest of drawers giving out secret tasks in the bathroom was a hangover from The Tree of Temptation in a previous Celebrity series.
Shabby had huge anger issues, in daily explosions. She was forced to part with her lucky hat in a bargain for tobacco for the group. That meltdown was enormous. Posh Ben hilariously nicknamed her the "Grumpy Little Raincloud of Doom" causing another meltdown.

Josie was the runaway winner, even the house had voted for her to have a fast pass to the final. After she exited she was immediately offered the chance to walk back in to compete in the very last Celebrity and All-Stars "Ultimate Big Brother". She did, but walked out again pretty soon, missing her sweetheart John James.

John James had come from Australia to compete. He and Josie moved in together almost straight after the show saying they couldn't bear to be apart, but sadly split up after a year. Josie has since forged a career in mainstream TV presenting and appeared in the 2023 "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here".

It was the final time Davina McCall presented the show, she had been there since the very first day.
