Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the first thing the Doctor says in this episode, after Strax knocks on the door of the TARDIS and asks him to come outside?

Answer: "Shush."

Still reeling from his sudden regeneration and being pursued by a Tyrannosaurus rex, the Doctor emerges from the TARDIS and proceeds to confuse Strax with one of the Seven Dwarves and refers to Vastra and Jenny as "the green one and the not green one". He also forgets Clara's name, claiming that "names aren't my area".
2. Initially, the Doctor doesn't recognise Clara. Who or what does he mistakenly think she is?

Answer: Handles, the Cyberman head from "The Time of the Doctor"

When Clara says something is wrong (referring to this new Doctor in front of her), the Doctor (still confused) asks if she has regenerated, but then suddenly thinks he remembers who she is. He calls her Handles, before saying that she's "really let herself go".
3. When the Doctor is having a manic exchange with the tramp in the alley, how does he describe his eyebrows?

Answer: "These are attack eyebrows!"

The Doctor, displeased with his new face, says of his eyebrows, "You could take bottle-tops off with these." He then remarks that they're cross and "crosser than my face. They're independently cross." Hearing himself rant, the Doctor suddenly realises that he's gone Scottish, before becoming amused at the fact that he can now complain about things.
4. The advertisement in the newspaper leads both the Doctor and Clara to which restaurant?

Answer: Mancini's Family Restaurant

With both the Doctor and Clara unsure of who placed the cryptic advertisement in the newspaper to lead them to this restaurant, they become aware of the unusual behaviour of the other diners in Mancini's Family Restaurant. None of them are breathing or eating, and their actions are repetitive, like clockwork.

As they get up to leave, the rest of the diners get up and move towards them, only moving when the Doctor and Clara do. When they realise they can't get out, they return to their seats, as do the diners.

A spooky waiter (also robotic) appears and proceeds to scan the Doctor and Clara, naming various organs as it does so. The pair then gets strapped into their seats as it descends into the depths of the restaurant.
5. When he and Clara are facing off against the Half-Face Man, what two things does the Doctor say he doesn't like?

Answer: Karaoke and mime

After revealing himself to have been disguised as a droid and saving Clara from the Half-Face Man, the Doctor threatens to blow up the Half-Face Man's ship using its power source if he sees "one thing that I don't like, and that includes karaoke and mime, so take no chances." The Doctor then questions the Half-Face Man and asks why he placed the advertisement in the paper to draw them there.

The droid looks at him blankly before the Doctor realises that he was wrong. The droid didn't do it.
6. What is the name of the droids' spaceship, which is a sister ship to the one that featured in 2006's "The Girl in the Fireplace"?

Answer: S.S. Marie Antoinette

Much of "Deep Breath" references Steven Moffat's earlier episode "The Girl in the Fireplace", with both episodes featuring droids collecting human body parts. While the droids in "Fireplace" needed body parts for their ship, the droids in "Deep Breath" need them to become human so they can find "the Promised Land".

When the Doctor inspects the ship's control panel in the restaurant, he sees that it is called the S.S. Marie Antoinette.
7. Which human body part(s) provides the Half-Face Man's escape pod with the ability to fly?

Answer: Skin

The roof of the restaurant opens and the escape pod flies out, thanks to a huge balloon made of human skin. The Half-Face Man is determined to fly up into the sky in search of the Promised Land, but the Doctor tells him that no such place exists. In order to keep the people of Earth safe, the Doctor tells the droid that it needs to kill itself or the Doctor will. Eventually, the Half-Face Man is seen impaled upon the very top of Big Ben's tower, having chosen to commit suicide.

This also shuts down the remaining droids in the depths of the restaurant and saves Vastra, Jenny, Strax and Clara.
8. Towards the end of the episode, from whom does Clara receive a phone call?

Answer: The Eleventh Doctor

Phoning from Trenzalore, just before his regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor asks Clara to trust the new man and to help him, because he is alone and in need. Clara agrees and begins to see the Doctor properly. The two then go off to have coffee.
9. Who greets the Half-Face Man when he arrives in the Promised Land after his death?

Answer: Missy

Missy is a mysterious woman, almost Mary Poppins-like in her appearance. She welcomes the Half-Face Man when he wakes up after his death, saying that she hopes "her boyfriend wasn't too mean to you." Confused, the Half-Face Man asks where he is, looking around at this idyllic garden around him. Missy tells him. "You've made it. The Promised Land. Paradise. Welcome... to Heaven."
10. How many different outfits does the Doctor wear during this episode?

Answer: Five

When he first emerges from the TARDIS, the Doctor is wearing the outfit of his predecessor, having just regenerated. When he collapses and is taken back to the Paternoster Gang's house, he is dressed in a nightgown. When the Doctor meets up with Clara at the restaurant, he is dressed in the tramp's clothing.

After seemingly abandoning Clara, he reveals himself to have been disguised as one of the droids and is dressed in a black suit and tie. Finally, when he returns in the TARDIS to pick Clara up, the Doctor is dressed in his new outfit (white shirt, dark blue trousers, dark blue coat with red lining).
