Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year is "Kill the Moon" set?

Answer: 2049

The date is shown right at the very beginning of the episode. The fact that the events are playing out in the near future is addressed; Clara knows that the Moon doesn't get destroyed in 2049 because she has travelled further into the future and has seen the Moon.

A return to the notion of "fixed points in time" and time being in flux also features in this episode, as the fate of the Moon and the Earth is decided.
2. What does Clara want the Doctor to say to Courtney?

Answer: That she's special

According to Clara, Courtney Woods is now more of a disruptive influence since the Doctor supposedly called her "not special". Urged by Clara to rectify this, the Doctor decides the best way for Courtney to feel special is to make her the first woman to walk on the moon.

Courtney accompanied the Doctor when he disposed of the Skovox Blitzer at the end of the previous episode. Clara mentions that Courtney keeps stealing the Doctor's psychic paper to use as fake ID to buy alcohol. It was the Doctor's flippant remark that she's not special that apparently "sent her off the rails".
3. What object does the Doctor attribute to his estimation of the year of their arrival on the space shuttle?

Answer: A prototype version of the Bennett oscillator

Upon emerging from the TARDIS, the Doctor studies the immediate environment to ascertain when and where they are. Alongside the (unseen) prototype Bennett oscillator is a multitude of nuclear bombs. Courtney complains that they aren't on the Moon and as the Doctor looks out of a window, they discover that they're on the way to the moon in a space shuttle.

The Bennett oscillator is a sort of in-joke in "Doctor Who", which was first (and last) mentioned in the Fourth Doctor episode "The Ark in Space". Nothing is really known about the Bennett oscillator, other than it was named after the director of "The Ark in Space", Rodney Bennett.
4. What nationality were the previous astronauts who set up the mining survey on the Moon?

Answer: Mexican

Ten years earlier, a privately-funded crew of Mexican astronauts had set up a base on the Moon to study its minerals. None of them survived; they were eaten alive by something. No attempt was made to rescue them from the Moon, as there was no means to do so. With the human race's appetite for spacefaring diminished, the only remnant of the past was a former NASA space shuttle in a museum (which had been repurposed for the amusement of children.
5. To what does the Doctor compare the spider-like creatures, after Courtney dispatches one?

Answer: Germs

With Duke being attacked by the creature, the power fleetingly comes back on, opening a door. The Doctor, Clara and Lundvik manage to get through but Courtney is left inside and begins floating in the air after a change in the gravity. With the creature advancing towards her, Courtney reaches into her backpack and pulls out the disinfectant she had earlier (to clear up her sick-up in the TARDIS).

A good few sprays renders the creature dead. The Doctor compares it to the size of a badger and, noting what Courtney says about the disinfectant killing 99.9% of germs, declares that this creature in front of him is a germ. Of course, the Doctor doesn't put it as simply as that at first.

He describes it as a prokaryotic, unicellular lifeform with non-chromosomal DNA.
6. What is the Moon, really?

Answer: egg

The Doctor puts all of the pieces of this puzzle together - the increase in the mass of the Moon, the shifting gravity, the unusual seismic activity, the pools of amniotic fluid, and the wandering germs. The Moon is not a solid piece of rock but an egg.

The Moon is an egg about to hatch. That's why it's heavier and causing the Earth's tides to rise higher than normal. With the prospect of a living creature about to be born, an ultimatum is formed: detonate the nuclear bombs and kill this ancient, unique creature, saving the Earth, or let it continue and risk the millions and billions of lives on the planet below.

The Doctor decides that, as a non-human, it isn't his decision to make, and leaves it to Clara, Courtney and Lundvik to decide the fate of the Moon and the Earth.
7. In which city did the Doctor say he and Clara went to dinner in 1937?

Answer: Berlin

The Doctor argues that the events of the past are no more manipulable than those of the future. He mentions a time when he and Clara had dinner in Berlin in 1937. Just because they were there, there was no reason for Clara to expect the Doctor to kill Hitler if they had the chance.

As a Gallifreyan, the Doctor has no real attachment to Earth and its Moon and, unable to foresee what will happen either way, it is up to the humans to decide if the Moon gets blown up or not.
8. For how long does Lundvik set the the timer on the detonator?

Answer: 1 hour

With the Doctor gone, Clara, Courtney and Lundvik argue over whether to detonate the bombs or not. Lundvik is concerned for the safety of the planet and is willing to kill the Moon to save the people below. Clara is against detonation and wants to save the creature. Unable to come to an agreement, Lundvik activates the detonator and sets a timer.

The bombs are set to go off in one hour, but a safety switch on the detonator can abort the sequence if need be. However, that will prevent any further attempts at detonation.
9. How do the people of Earth show their decision to save or destroy the Moon?

Answer: Turning their lights on or off

Clara broadcasts to the Earth the details of the situation. All those in favour of killing the creature in the Moon must turn their lights off, while those opposed to this and want to take their chances with it can leave their lights on. As Clara observes the Earth, she sees ripples of activity as some lights are turned off in cities across the world. Ultimately, all the lights on Earth go off. The decision is made. The Moon will be blown up.

As the timer on the detonator approaches zero, Clara changes her mind at the last second and aborts the sequence. The Doctor appears in the TARDIS and transports them to the surface of the Earth to watch the creature hatch from the Moon. The massive hatchling flies off into space, leaving behind a new egg/Moon.
10. What does Clara threaten to do to the Doctor if he doesn't tell her what he knew about the Moon?

Answer: Smack him so hard he'll regenerate

Incensed at the Doctor's decision to abandon them to decide the fate of the Moon, Clara accuses him of being patronising towards her and, by extension, all other humans. He says he left them to make the choice out of respect to her as a human, allowing her to choose her future. Clara points out that she very nearly made the wrong decision, even though the Doctor knew she'd always make the best choice. Growing angrier at the Doctor, she says he walks the Earth, breathes its air and befriends its people, and should therefore help it when they need it because it's just as much his as it is theirs. Clara tells him to go away and not come back before leaving the TARDIS.
