Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What city in Norway do the agents go to during the episode?

Answer: Tildeskan

Agents travel to Tildeskan - a fictitious city. Trondheim, however, is an actual city in Norway but the name was used for a character instead.
2. In what year was the USS Ardent launched?

Answer: 1991

Mulder notices a plaque with this information as the group boards the Ardent. What they immediately see is a significant amount of decay and rust despite the fact that the ship was launched just a few years prior. The rust was actually painted on by the series designer Graeme Murray. He called it "paint aging".
3. What whiskey brand was Cpt. Barkley drinking which, unbeknowngst to him, allowed him to survive longer?

Answer: Jack Daniel's

As Mulder finds Barkley hiding in the locker, the Captain is holding on to a Jack Daniel's bottle like to dear life. Well, it kind of was.
4. What is the last name of Cpt. Trondheim's first mate?

Answer: Halverson

Played by actor Mar Anderson who also played Jack Hammond - a pizza boy in the opening scene of "D.P.O." Ironically, in both episodes, Anderson's characters where killed. In "Dod Calm," it was over quickly with a blow to the head. In "D.P.O.", however, it was slow and very painful.
5. In his research, Mulder discovers several unexplained vessel disappearances in the same general area where the USS Ardent disappeared. How many disappearances were there, according to Mulder?

Answer: Nine

The episode contains multiple references to the Philadelphia Experiment. Mulder states there were nine unexplained vessel disappearances and alleges that the military never stopped experimenting with "wormholes" - places on Earth where time travels at a different rate.
6. What was the USS Ardent's vessel number?

Answer: 925

The number can be seen clearly several times throughout the episode. Most of the exterior and interior scenes were actually filmed on a real ship (decommissioned HCMS Mackenzie) making it an operational nightmare for the crew. In the season 2 gag reel available on DVD, Gilian Anderson recites a monologue without breaking the character: "What does remain clear to me.... is that Howard Gordon is a dead man" as the extremely tired cast and crew (jokingly?) blamed Gordon who wrote the screenplay, although filming on the ship was Chris Carter's idea.

The ship, which also appeared in episodes "Colony" and "End Game", was subsequently sunk and turned into an artificial reef.
7. How many drifting sailors from the USS Ardent were picked up by the Canadian trawler?

Answer: 18

Mulder tells Scully there were 18 of them but only one survived by the time Scully was able to get to the hospital. The actor playing Lt. Harper, the last survivor, appeared in several other episodes of the show.
8. What is the location of the military hospital that the agents are taken to after their rescue?

Answer: Bethesda

There is an actual medical center for the military personnel in Bethesda, but the hospital scenes where filmed in Jericho Sailing Club in Vancouver. It also served as the Tildeskan port bar to the delight of the cast and crew as they didn't have to travel to different locations.
9. How soon after the evacuation of agents did the ship sink?

Answer: One hour

The doctor tells Scully that the ship sank one hour after their rescue when Scully attempts to get a scientific crew to go and study the ship's phenomenon.
10. The last entry in Scully's journal mentions a mythological wolf who is supposed to swallow the sun according to the Norse legends. What is the wolf's name?

Answer: Skoll

"I think I can hear a wolf at the door..." In a very dramatic scene, exhausted and extremely aged Scully looks directly at the audience as her pen slowly drops on the floor. Critics praised Gillian Anderson's makeup in the episode. Mulder's, however, was perceived negatively because some thought it looked like a cheap rubber mask.
