Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the series begins, Laura Timmins is sent to live and work in the post office in the town of Candleford. Why?

Answer: There is a new baby, the house was too crowded, and Laura was old enough to leave the nest

The postmistress, Dorcas Lane, is her mother's cousin. With baby #5 it was a bit crowded in the Timmins house. Laura is reluctant to go, but she grows to love life in Candleford.
2. The Arless family are neighbors of the Timmins in the tiny Hamlet of Lark Rise. Caroline Arless has five children, one on the way, and has just become a grandmother. But there's no father present. Why?

Answer: He's away at sea

Walter Arless is a sailor. To the constant dismay of the shiftless and financially irresponsible Caroline, he repeatedly signs up for longer and longer voyages. Caroline's eldest daughter is married and living elsewhere. There is a telegram informing Caroline of the birth of her child in episode 1, and she is never mentioned again.
3. Dorcas Lane also owns another business, adjacent to the post office. What is it?

Answer: A blacksmith's forge

The blacksmith Matthew is the strong, silent type. He's present at all meals but rarely speaks. He disappears after series 1, with no explanation but the occasional mention of "since Matthew left". The dressmaker is close by, but owned by the sisters Pratt. The hotel doesn't come to town until series 2.
4. Dorcas's maid/cook/housekeeper is a cantankerous, outspoken old woman. What is her name?

Answer: Zilla

In one episode, she tells Laura that she was abandoned as an infant and found by Dorcas's grandfather, who brought her up in the post office. She has been there ever since. Ruby is one of the Pratt sisters, and Matilda is the actress who portrays Pearl Pratt.
5. Twister Turrell, the grandfather figure of Lark Rise, will do anything to avoid having to do an honest day's work. There's always an excuse, but what's his usual reason?

Answer: The rheumatism

Twister, played with scene-stealing vigor by Karl Johnson, will work occasionally, but more often than not "the rheumatism" prevents him. Or so he says.
6. Most of the menfolk of the hamlet of Lark Rise are day laborers who work for the local farmer. What's the farmer's name?

Answer: Old Monday

Old Monday is never seen but often mentioned. Sir Timothy Midwinter is the local gentry, who leaves the series in season 1. He of course is not a farmer.
7. What is the number on postman Thomas Brown's uniform collar?

Answer: 63

Thomas is a dedicated postman who takes his job and his uniform very seriously. P46 is the number on Constable Patterson's uniform.
8. Constable Patterson zealously keeps law and order in Candleford and Lark Rise. What is his common nickname?

Answer: Cabbage

"Cabbage" Patterson is obsessed with his garden and grows cabbages that always win top prize at the yearly harvest festival.
9. Laura's father Robert Timmins is a master craftsman, and the best for miles. What does he do?

Answer: Stonemason

Robert is a master stonemason. He only occasionally will work for Farmer Monday when there's no masonry work for him. Later in the series he is forced to leave the family to find work in neighboring Ingleston.
10. The Timmins family consists of five children. What are their names in order of birth?

Answer: Laura, Edmund, Ethel, Frank, Annie

Annie is the baby - and is a baby through the entire 4 seasons. She never seems to grow any older! Robert and Emma are the Timmins parents, Lizzie and Alf are two of the Arless children, Nan is Alf's girlfriend, and Sidney is Dorcas's adopted son.
