Mike wanted to encourage Mandy to try out because he thought she had no chance of making it. It would be the universe telling her no instead of her parents. Vanessa did not agree and wanted Mike to stop Mandy from trying out. She was tired of being the bad cop and Mike being the good cop.

Kristin saves his life by doing the Heimlich Maneuver when he choked on a chicken bone but the whole incident killed her chance to stand up for herself and get a better position at work. Later in the episode her boss shows her a picture of his 5 year old son and says without Kristin his son would be fatherless.

This helps Kristin see that she can make a difference in the world even at a crappy job like being a waitress.

Later on however, Mike changes his tune and sends the models home because he meets one of them who is a girl from Kristin's class in high school and realizes all of these girls are someone's daughters.
