Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was not one of the starting tribes this season?

Answer: Taku

Three new groups of six castaways were brought to the beaches of Fiji at the start of this forty-third game and the third in the proclaimed 'New Era' of "Survivor", and interestingly, this crop of players came into the game knowing about its changes (resulting from COVID-19 protocol) including a shorter runtime (of 26 days), less food, and all the twists and turns connected. With Coco in blue buffs, Baka in yellow, and Vesi in red, tribes competed for their pot, machete, and flint while, like in the previous seasons, the losers of the first challenge would have to complete a 'Sweat' or 'Savvy' prompted task back at camp to claim what they needed.
2. This season saw the return of the 'journey to the summit', but this time the journey took castaways to different spots. Which was not amongst them?

Answer: The depths of a cave

There were three summits this season, and each one not only occurred prior to the merge on Day 12, but featured the Prisoner's Dilemma experiments the Summit would become known for. In each case, the castaways sent to the summit (whether by tribes' own votes or as rewards for challenges) had the chance to gain intelligence and advantages. Gabler risked his vote on day one, getting an Immunity Idol good for his next two Tribal Councils; Noelle received a Steal-A-Vote that she would use on Day 17; Geo received an advantage that he'd never get to use (as he was blindsided before he could have the chance).
3. Beware Advantages found at each tribe camp in the early portion of the game had castaways trying to collect which of these from their fellow castaways?

Answer: Beads

Cody (of Vesi), Karla (of Coco), and Jeanine (of Baka) all located the Beware Advantages hiding around their respective camps in the first week-or-so of the game, opening them to discover that they needed to retrieve unique beads from each of their fellow tribemates' provided satchels, making their own Immunity Idols by fashioning bracelets. If they were not able to accomplish this from willing tribemates, they would lose their votes until they did.

Interestingly, all of the castaways who had to do this managed to accomplish the task by playing a strong social game, claiming they were building keepsakes for loved ones or making quirky clothing.
4. Which of these advantages/twists made a return in this season?

Answer: The Knowledge is Power Advantage

The Knowledge is Power Advantage made its way into the game with the start of the new era in "Survivor 41" and in that season and the one to follow it was used to no effect due to clever maneuvering by savvy players. It made a return in this season, being the reward provided to Geo after the competition's third summit journey, and it turned out to be another dud when he was eliminated with it (in-hand, unused) in the very next Tribal Council vote.

The Advantage was put back in the game immediately after the merge, found by James after he found a clue directing him to search under the tribe's shelter. James wouldn't get to use it either; he would be blindsided on Day 17. The Advantage did not return for "Survivor 44".
5. This season, castaways had to fight for a spot on the merged tribe. Was anyone sent to Exile Island?

Answer: No

On Day 13, the castaways were informed that the tribal portion of the game had come to an end and players would need to look towards their individual games. Though they wouldn't be merged yet, they would compete for a chance at immunity (and a spot on the merged tribe) in a challenge as teams (though no one would be sent to Exile for being the odd one out, as had happened in previous seasons).

The winning team was subsequently allowed to head to a merge meal, immune, while the losing team was forced to scramble to stay in the game.
6. What was the name given to this season's merged tribe?

Answer: Gaia

Although castaways dropped their buffs and united on Baka's beach on Day 12 and competed to survive the merge on Day 13, they were fully merged by the time Day 14 came around, marking the halfway point of the game as a single group in light blue buffs. Although Gaia has the obvious connotation with an Earthly figure, the name was chosen because it was also the name of one of the castaway's cats.

Following the first merged Tribal Council (in which Dwight was eliminated), all subsequent castaways voted out went to the jury panel.
7. How many tie votes/revotes did this season see at Tribal Council?

Answer: None

Considering the complexity of many seasons of the era (and those that came before it), "Survivor 43" featured fairly straightforward Tribal Council sessions which, while they featured some Idol play and Advantage uses, had definitive voting results. At no point this season did castaways risk rocks or even revotes because there was always a simple majority.

The only occasion that even came close to a split vote was a 3-2 vote casting on Day 11, otherwise all other votes passed with a significant, often near-unanimous gap.
8. Only one Shot in the Dark was used during this season. Who used it?

Answer: Sami

Perhaps in a testament to the social gameplay of this season, there were multiple blindsides and clever Tribal Council votes, but only one instance where a player felt their back was against the wall enough to draw the Shot in the Dark. On Day 21, three different players went into the Tribal Council ceremony with immunity, leaving only four with a chance of going home (and multiple secret advantages available to be played). Sami ended up using the Shot in the Dark on its final night, but it failed to grant him safety and resulted in the removal of his vote.

He was sent to the jury unanimously.
9. The 'Choose Your Champion' Advantage was found by Cody on Day 21. He chose Owen as his Champion, but did he win Immunity?

Answer: Yes

On Day 21, the seven remaining castaways watched the sunrise and received some important information. With instruction to search their jungle for an advantage, Cody found what was discovered to be a new game mechanic called 'Choose Your Champion'. This meant that, at the next Immunity Challenge, he could bet on which tribemate would win Immunity and, if he was right, he would be able to claim it as well.

Interestingly, both Owen and Karla took the win this time around, outlasting the other players long enough for their fellow tribemates to concede to a tie. It meant that not only were the pair Immunity recipients, but so was Cody, making nearly half the tribe immune going into the vote.
10. Who was declared the Sole Survivor of "Survivor 43"?

Answer: Gabler

After twenty-six days, the final three castaways-- Gabler, Cassidy, and Owen-- headed to the final Tribal Council to plead their case for the million dollar prize before a jury of eight eliminated players. Ultimately, seven members of the jury (everyone except James, who voted for Cassidy) gave their vote to Gabler, making him one of the oldest "Survivor" champions.

At the aftershow, almost immediately after the votes were revealed, Gabler announced that he would be donating the entirety of his million dollar prize, under his father's name, to veteran support programs.
