Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eighteen castaways competed in this season of "Survivor", but how many were returning players?

Answer: Four

Fourteen castaways ended up arriving in the Fijian islands on a fishing boat loaded with supplies, ready for a new adventure. What they discovered was that they wouldn't be starting this adventure with a record low number of players. With that, Jeff brought four returning players: Kelley Wentworth, David Wright, Joe Anglim, and Aubry Bracco; Kelley and David went with Manu while Joe and Aubry went with Kama. With that, they had two minutes to empty the boat and head out to their respective camps as two tribes of nine.
2. While residing on the Edge of Extinction, castaways could remove themselves from the game by doing which of these things?

Answer: Raising a flag

Though Jeff informed the castaways that this season would be called 'Edge of Extinction', none would understand the full extent of this gimmick until a bit later on. After being voted out, eliminated castaways would be given the option of going home or going to the Edge of Extinction, a remote island with minimal shelter and supplies where they could aim to reenter the game at key moments.

Anyone who decided that they no longer wished to remain at the Edge could opt to leave the game, but they needed to signify this decision with the raising of a white flag. Only two castaways took this out-- Keith and Wendy. Both of them did so on Day 17 upon losing the challenge that would have put them back in the game.
3. Castaways divided into two tribes at the start of the game: Manu and Kama. Which tribe never saw Tribal Council before the merge?

Answer: Kama

There were six Tribal Council visits before players hit the merge on Day 17, and none of those were visits that were made by the yellow-buffed Kama tribe, even after the tribal swap occurred on Day 9. When all this was said and done, it meant that five castaways wouldn't receive torches or place votes for seventeen days (as they not only started on the Kama tribe, but remained on it when buffs were redistributed.

Interestingly, no Manu members ended up switching to Kama at that time.
4. On Day 9, the tribes were shuffled and a third, new tribe was added. What colour buff did the new Lesu tribe don?

Answer: Green

Day 9 marked the moment for the big tribe shake-up of the season as Jeff had the fifteen remaining castaways drop their buffs to be redistributed into not two, but three tribes. What resulted was five original Kama tribe members remaining on Kama (in yellow), four Kama members joining Wendy on Manu (in blue), and five former Manu members becoming Lesu, the new tribe (in green). Because they needed to form a completely new tribe, they also needed to build a camp from scratch on a new beach. They would end up going to Tribal Council once, then, before Manu resumed their losing streak.
5. When the Edge of Extinction twist was revealed, who was the first castaway to return to the game, doing so at the merge?

Answer: Rick

On Day 17, after the announcement of the merge, the six castaways who'd taken the offer to head to the Edge of Extinction were brought together to compete for a spot back in the game despite their earlier elimination. After the commonly-seen obstacle course and ball wall challenge, it was Rick who won out over the others and was allowed to join his new tribe for the merge feast. All of the remaining Edge of Extinction castaways were allowed to, if they chose, return to the beach and wait for another opportunity to reenter the game.
6. The merge occurred on Day 17, forming what new single tribe?

Answer: Vata

The castaways of the three separate tribes merged upon reaching the challenge site on Day 17, dropping their buffs and uniting there. After the Edge of Extinction twist was revealed and Rick maneuvered his way back into the game, thirteen castaways joined on the Manu beach for their feast and new life and game together.

Interestingly, because of the second Extinction challenge seen later in the game, it meant that fourteen different castaways would become members of Vata. It would be the largest amount of castaways to be members of the merged tribe in any season.
7. Due to the Edge of Extinction twist, this season did not feature any Hidden Immunity Idols.

Answer: False

The season featured many Hidden Immunity Idols, some of which were only in play because of the Edge of Extinction.

To begin, Ron ended up getting an Advantage Menu on Day 1, one option from it good as a possible Hidden Immunity Idol until the third Tribal Council. Lauren got a full Immunity Necklace at Manu on Day 4, Aubry got one (and was eliminated with it) one at Kama, and Kelley found the Lesu idol on Day 16. Rick received two pieces of an idol coming back into the game at the merge, but it was only usable when split up and handed to another player. He and David used it on Day 23. Rick would find two more idols later in the game and another two-part idol would show up after the final Edge Challenge.
8. Who was the second castaway to return to the game from the Edge of Extinction, doing so on Day 35?

Answer: Chris

Though Chris was eliminated on Day 9, the Edge of Extinction gimmick did him well. It was Day 35 when all the Edge of Extinction castaways were able to compete to regain the final spot back in the game, joining the final five to make a final six and vying for a spot in the final Tribal Council.

It was Chris, who worked through a rope course and table maze, who took that last spot and began a run for the finale. He not only had one Hidden Immunity Idol played for him upon his return, but he used another in the next two votes.
9. As a result of the season's 'Edge of Extinction' gimmick, and considering the players who removed themselves from the game, how many castaways served on this season's jury?

Answer: Thirteen

When the jury was revealed at Tribal Council on Day 19, all castaways discovered that anyone still on the Edge of Extinction would not only have a shot at reentering the competition, but that they would all be able to vote at the final Tribal Council if they did not succeed.

This meant that the game would end this season with a jury of thirteen players (and a final three). Keith and Wendy, both of whom raised the flag on the Edge of Extinction, gave up their vote by leaving the game in full.
10. Which castaway won "Survivor: Edge of Extinction"?

Answer: Chris

The finale this season, held with three finalists and fifteen jury members, managed to be an interesting one as it contained Gavin and Julie, both of whom made their way through the full run of the game, and Chris, who came back late from the Edge of Extinction. Additionally, at the penultimate Tribal Council, Chris gave up immunity to save his co-finalists, going head-to-head against fellow returnee in a fire-making challenge to remove his biggest threat (and succeeding). Though the circumstances of his presence in the game were much different from the others, Chris took the win with a vote of nine to four (to none) with Gavin placing second and Julie placing third.

It meant Chris was the first-ever "Survivor" winner to be voted out and still win.
