Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On a night in 1981, a body is found by Tom and Frankie in which of these locations?

Answer: A beach

As the surf crashed on the shores of Fire Island on a night in 1981, two men laid on the beach under the cover of darkness. Fumbling around in the sand, one of the men stopped suddenly, feeling as though something may have bit him. By nothing more than a lighter's glow, he confirmed some sort of marking on his body, but what caused it wasn't the bite of an animal, but the feeling of something buried, shallowly, on the beach. Sifting the sand away, they found human remains right beneath them.
2. Dr. Wells notices a discolouration on Gino's arm and comments that she's seen similar markings on which of these?

Answer: Other gay men

Dr. Wells is visited in her lab by both Patrick and Gino, the former of whom is there to investigate her in regards to the recent crimes and the latter of whom is tagging along to get the scoop. Their main point for being there is the blood samples she took on the night of the fire at the Ascension Club since one of those samples might belong to the man both of them are looking for-- the Mai Tai Killer. Wells responds that her samples are confidential and while Patrick tries to appeal to her concern for the gay men of the city, Gino's anger leaks through and puts her off the idea of cooperating with their unofficial investigation.

Gino reveals the sketch he's drawn of the killer, but before Dr. Wells can weigh in, she notices a mark on Gino's arm. She's seen similar discolourations on some of her patients. All she can do is recommend a check-up for both of them before she sends them on their way.
3. Detective Read is called directly in regards to the body out on Fire Island. Who does he contact immediately after?

Answer: Sam

At the station, Det. Read returns to his desk to find that the rest of the squad is turning against him in subtle ways. He brushes it aside when the phone rings and he picks it up to receive the call of a concerned man living out on Fire Island. The man, Frankie, avoided calling local police after having heard of Read through a mutual friend, and the reason for the call is the body found out on the beach near his place. The body, he says, has been there quite a while and it's wearing a leather mask.

At his apartment, Sam has a crate delivered when he receives a call. It turns out to be from Patrick, calling to let him know about the body.

Out by the riverside, Henry Grant meets with a local mobster concerned with Gino's reporting in 'The Native' and its affect on people's perception of the police. Henry's happy to oblige. All he needs to do is make sure Gino has written his last article.
4. Henry is revealed to be which of these?

Answer: A hit man

Patrick packs his things and lets Gino know that he's headed off to Fire Island and Gino almost immediately prepares to leave as well. Patrick stops him, however, since he believes he needs to tread lightly-- it's not his jurisdiction. As Patrick leaves, Gino curiously follows behind and watches as his boyfriend gets into the back of Sam's convertible and drives off.

Angrily, Gino returns to his apartment to grab his bag and head out in pursuit but he doesn't realize until it's too late that Henry's stepped into his home. A gun is pulled on him and he's forced to take a seat as Henry explains himself-- he's a hit man, and the people who are actually in charge of New York City aren't taking kindly to the articles Gino is publishing. Bottom line: it has to stop or he'll need to die.
5. Patrick owns a secret home on Fire Island.

Answer: False

When Patrick and Sam reach Fire Island they come across the house they were called to visit to meet Tom and Frankie who, after Patrick flashes his badge, point in the right direction and head on their way. Sam, with his keys in hand, lets himself into the house nearby and remarks that he never felt so relaxed as he did on Fire Island. Patrick chalks that, and the shallow grave for the body, up to the amount of drugs they were on.

Heading out to the beach, Patrick and Sam decide that they need to locate the rest of the remains to give the body a proper burial-- something they should have done long ago. They're interrupted, however, when Henry and Gino arrive to confront them. Patrick has no choice, at that point, but to explain what happened.
6. Patrick first visited Fire Island in 1979, and it was there that he met a young man by what name?

Answer: Billy

It was 1979 when Patrick first visited Fire Island, and as soon as he got off the ferry he was scooped up by Sam, brought to the party at his place, and met Billy. At the time, Patrick was married to Barbara but he went to the island in secret with the intention of being himself. Meeting Billy, though, allowed him to let himself go. Sam gave both of them cocaine; it was a first for both of them.

Before long, all three of them split off from the party and headed into the basement to partake in rougher fare. Reaching the cellar, Sam revealed the stocks hanging from the ceiling and Billy, eager to please, volunteered to be placed inside. What resulted was a dangerous night that led to Billy's death; he would suffocate in the leather mask he was placed into, and no one would notice until it was too late.
7. When 'the Velvet Touch' arrived to deal with the body on Fire Island, did he travel alone?

Answer: No

Once Sam and Patrick realized that Billy was dead, Patrick tried to perform CPR to no avail, realizing that he was well past the point of saving. Sam pulled a gun on him, insisting that he stop and that they make a plan to go to the police. The problem, however, was that Patrick was a cop. There was no way they could do it without the obvious risk to both of their livelihoods and reputations.

Sam realized that there was one thing they could do. He knew a man who was a fixer for the mob; he went by the name 'Velvet Touch'. They'd have to call him in. When the man finally arrived, it was Henry. And he didn't arrive alone. His unnamed associate would be a big help as he was a wiz at cutting up bodies. No one knew that man would become the Mai Tai Killer.
8. Was the body on Fire Island found intact?

Answer: No

Whitely, looking over the body in Sam's Fire Island basement, realized quickly that the dead man was one of them (as in a gay man) and he balked at the idea of having to dismember it despite Henry's insistence that it needed to be butchered like a regular piece of meat. Henry wouldn't have it. Smacking Whitely in the face for defying him, Henry threatened to tell his mother about his sexuality. That was enough for him. Whitely placed the mask back over Billy's head and went to work, putting out his supplies and chopping the body to pieces.

When Henry returned to the cellar to check Whitely's work, he found a fully dismembered body. Whitely commented on the beauty of the victim. He deserved better and someone should've been watching out for him.
9. Henry lures the Mai Tai Killer to which of these locations in an attempt to help Gino identify him?

Answer: A bar

When Gino hears the full story, he starts to realize how deep Patrick's secrets really go but the worst part is that he's stuck. He can't go to the cops and now that he knows the crime, he's in just as deep. As Patrick picks up the pieces around them though, he comes to the realization that the body parts were cleanly cut, not unlike the victims he's been encountering as of late in the Mai Tai Killer case. He asks Henry to reveal his cleaner and though Henry's hesitant due to lack of concrete evidence, he tells them that his name is Mr. Whitely and he's a male nurse. Patrick gives Gino his gun before Gino heads off with Henry to place a call.

Using the phone at the ferry station, Henry calls Whitely only to get his answering machine. Calling his office number, however, patches him right through to his cellar. Whitely picks up there and, though he tries to resist doing the job Henry asks of him, he knows there's no real choice. Henry worries that Whitely knows something's up, so he shifts the plan, asking to meet him at a neutral location. There, Gino can ID his man and if he's actually the Mai Tai Killer they can proceed from there. Henry'll even kill him himself, down at the docks.
10. Gino manages to locate Whitely and follow him back to his workshop. Who does he call for support?

Answer: Patrick

Henry and Gino arrive at the bar they're expected to visit and while Gino hides in the backseat of Henry's car, Henry heads inside to meet with the suspect. Whitely is inside, sipping a mai tai at the bar, and he offers Henry his own as well. Henry orders a whiskey instead. The two share brief words before Whitely heads to the restroom and after Henry downs his drink order, he follows behind, gun in-hand. When he opens the door however, Whitely ambushes him, sticks a syringe into his neck, and sedates him.

Gino watches from the car as Whitely carries Henry to his vehicle and drives off. Getting into the driver's seat, he heads out in a slow pursuit and reaches Whitely's destination before locating a payphone. He phones Patrick; he's going to need his help.
