Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Adam arrives at Hannah's apartment to find which of the following?

Answer: The police

In the year 1981, Adam heads to Hannah's still dressed in his funeral garb. When he reaches her apartment building, however, it appears there was an accident inside; someone was burned in an awful fire. Adam lets the officer standing at the door know he's a friend of the woman in 6B and he's let inside. Unfortunately, Hannah is the deceased.

The detective inside lets him know that there seemed to be no sign of forced entry. A phone on an end-table is off the hook. He asks about any known medical issues, but there didn't seem to be anything to worry about. The detective leaves his card; he'll take a statement in the morning.

As the police depart, Adam looks around the room and finds a tape recorder on the coffee table. Rewinding and playing it, he listens to Hannah's findings about the deer on Fire Island. He doesn't see Big Daddy standing in the room behind him.
2. As a favour from Patrick, Adam is able to consult the police mortician regarding Hannah's death. Based only on the tapes he finds, she's believed to have died by what means?

Answer: Heart failure

Bringing the tape deck home Adam starts taking thorough notes on Hannah's findings. What he finds, however, is most alarming. As the tape continues on, Hannah starts to have trouble breathing, coughing uncontrollably. During one such recording, she appears to cough in a strangled way until she collapses.

The tapes, however, ultimately lead Adam to the police mortician who, after hearing the tapes, believes that Hannah likely died of heart failure. It was sudden, likely, but she won't be able to complete an autopsy until the following day. Adam insists it might be homicide, but he's told not to go down that route or he will likely be subject to questioning. This is, after all, a favour for Patrick.
3. It was confirmed that Theo's death was a case of foul play.

Answer: False

To extrapolate, the autopsy report on Theo proves that there's likely no relation between his and Hannah's deaths. Perhaps the one good thing to come of it is that Theo never suffered or struggled. What caused his death was pneumocystis pneumonia, a fungal infection of the lungs that was left untreated. His immune system was weak-- after all, he was hung up crucifixion-style on Fire Island. Toxicology reports also found quaaludes in his system. The cause of death was suffocation. There was no proof of foul play and, for Adam, no real closure.

Adam tries to drown his sorrows in beer and further research. Continuing through Hannah's notes, he comes to realize she knew more than she told. When she inseminated herself with Adam's sample she recorded the date and, per her research, it seems that she was infected through those means. Her results match those of her gay patients. It led her to the conclusion that the disease was sexually transmitted.
4. Once he realizes the infection is sexually-transmitted, Adam does which of the following?

Answer: Creates posters promoting safe sex

It appears that, based on the tapes, Hannah always planned to tell Adam the truth but never got around to it. As he listens to them he heads to a doctor's office and has a test taken on a lesion on his body. The doctor says it'll take seven to ten days for results, but Adam knows it's a Kaposi sarcoma; he just needs it on record. Adam recommends that there should be research put into his results, but the doctor finds it ludicrous to think something like that could be necessary.

The tapes continue and Adam finds Hannah got more interested in pursuing Fran's leads regarding the deer on Fire Island and the ticks on Plum Island. The problem there is that there was no real connection between them. More likely, Hannah mused, was that she was dealing with a new pathogen coming from anywhere. She would have to make more noise to get someone to notice her research, she reiterated.

At the office for 'The Native', Adam prints flyers promoting safe sex.
5. Kathy Pizzazz retires from her role at the Neptune Baths in what year?

Answer: 1981

Adam arrives at the Neptune Baths to speak to Kathy Pizzazz and let her and her patrons know about the possible public health risk. Initially she believes him to be a city worker but once he clarifies he's just a concerned citizen, she softens a bit. She indicates that it's her last show this evening; it's too unsafe to keep up the work. It's the end of an era. The dream is gone, and she's sensed it coming for a long time. She tells him that he's too young to think about how not to die and urges him to remember how to live.

Adam departs, heading into the city to put up his posters in parks. He ends up on the subway where a woman-- one he recalls seeing in the past-- reminds him that she told him about the danger to come. A newspaper left on the seat beside him bears a small article about a rare cancer spreading in homosexual men.
6. In 1987, Gino purchases which of these from a pharmacy to treat AIDS?

Answer: AZT

In 1987, New York and the world have changed. Gino heads to a pharmacy and waits his turn in line, not noticing Big Daddy pacing the aisles behind him. He receives a bottle of AZT before leaving.

As he walks the streets alone he believes he sees Patrick walking with him, hand in hand, but he turns back to see no one there.

Gino arrives at Patrick's funeral and introduces himself to his parents, unfortunately receiving the cold shoulder. Staring into the parlour he sees Patrick's casket is closed and angrily opens it, furious that people aren't willing to see what became of him. As Patrick's eyes snap open, Gino snaps out of his daydream and the ceremony begins.
7. The events following Patrick's death go by in a blur for Gino. Does he continue his job at 'The Native'?

Answer: Yes

As Adam takes his seat for Patrick's funeral service , Gino heads to the podium to say a few words for the eulogy, instead finding he has nothing to say. As he looks across the room, Big Daddy stands behind the mourners as the lights begin to flicker. It almost seems as though Gino enters a dream in which the events occur around him. He seems men, one after the other, falling into graves being dug by the figure, each wearing skull masks.

In 1988, Gino joins protestors looking for an AIDS cure. He revisits his memories of Patrick in stuttering memories and continues to write for 'The Native', all while those around him continue to die.
8. Over time, Gino appears to get sicker and sicker while those around him appear to be killed by what means?

Answer: Murdered by Big Daddy

In 1989, Gino drinks alone on nights at the bar and has visions of Mr. Whitely ordering him a mai tai. The figure of Big Daddy appears behind Whitely and slits his throat while Gino continues on.

One night, Gino takes a gentleman home after a drink and, as they reach the bedroom, Gino has an awful coughing fit. As he leaves the room for a glass of water, the man departs. When Gino returns to the room, it's covered in blood once again spilled by Big Daddy, another indication that the danger continues unabated.

On another night, Gino has a vision of every other man in the bar being killed, as though he's the last man standing while the infection ravages the community.
9. Does Gino survive into the 1990s?

Answer: Yes

In 1990, Gino awakens to find a pool of blood in the bed next to him and, following it to his front door, he sees Big Daddy standing outside. He shuts it before he can enter. By this point, more than 100,000 have died of AIDS. He writes another article before leaving the office for the day.

At home, Gino uses a mortar and pestle to create a cream for his lesions and, coupled with the medication in his cabinet, he tries to stave off the disease. He continues to deteriorate as he attends funeral after funeral.

In 1991, hands shaking, he has another drink at the bar. His face and body are covered in lesions and he needs a walker to get around the city. Everywhere he walks he sees skeletal faces.
10. Who performs a eulogy at Gino's funeral?

Answer: Adam

As Gino walks down the street he finally comes to the point on the sidewalk where he can not pass by Big Daddy. In his own bed in his apartment, he struggles to breathe and, before long, he's one more body to fall into the grave dug for Big Daddy's victims. Looking to his side, Gino watches as Patrick arrives to greet him from a bright light.

Adam arrives at Gino's funeral to find an open casket, and as he looks down at his mentor he leaves a necklace by his side. As the mourners take their seats, he struggles and starts a eulogy.
