Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Monkhouse was probably the doyen of British game show hosts over the decades. Which is the only one of these shows that he NEVER hosted?

Answer: The Generation Game

Bob Monkhouse, from the English county of Kent, was a scriptwriter and stand-up comedian, but became almost synonymous with quiz/game shows from the late 1960s through to the early 2000s. He hosted over thirty shows, his first big success being "The Golden Shot" which first aired on ITV in 1967.

He had two stints as host of "Celebrity Squares", in the 1970s and 1990s; and he was the first-ever host of "Family Fortunes" in 1980, this being based on the American show "Family Feud". His last game show before his death in 2003 was the BBC show "Wipeout".
2. "The Krypton Factor" aired on ITV between 1977 and 1995 (there was a later revival), and had a number of rounds which were quite a bit different from the normal answering of general knowledge questions. Which one of the following was NOT a requirement of contestants?

Answer: Keeping their heart rate below a certain level whilst answering questions

Gordon Burns was the host during the original run of "The Krypton Factor" between 1977 and 1955, a show which tested contestants on a number of mental and physical abilities. The "krypton" bit alludes to the home planet of Superman. The odd-one-out answer which refers to heart beat comes from a different show, "The Chair", which was hosted by John McEnroe.
3. In the game show "Pointless", which first aired on BBC in 2009, how much money was added to the jackpot every time a contestant gave a pointless answer?

Answer: £250

"Pointless" had a format in which 100 members of the public were surveyed on a number of topics, with a time limit of 100 seconds per question, and the contestants in the studio had to give the answers they thought the least number of those surveyed came up with. Every time a contestant came up with an answer nobody surveyed knew, £250 was added to the jackpot.

The jackpot started at £1000 but would roll over to the next show if nobody won it. Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman co-hosted the show between 2009 and 2022.
4. "And now, from Norwich, it's the quiz of the week" was the phrase used to introduce which one of these game shows?

Answer: Sale of the Century

"Sale of the century" had an original run of twelve years between 1971 and 1983. It originally only aired in the Anglia ITV region, but went nationwide in 1972, which was when the "Norwich" phrase was introduced. Nicholas Parsons was the host throughout the show's original run.
5. Who was the original "skyrunner" in the Channel 4 show "Treasure Hunt"?

Answer: Anneka Rice

"Treasure Hunt" was one of the first shows broadcast on Channel 4 after its foundation in 1982. Two contestants in the studio, alongside presenter Kenneth Kendall, had to solve a series of clues to guide "skyrunner" Anneka Rice to the treasure (usually a small artifact). Rice was transported by helicopter to various places in the United Kingdom (and later overseas), but the contestants couldn't see her, they had to converse via radio link. Former tennis player Annabel Croft replaced Rice in 1989.
6. "Whodunnit" was an ITV murder-mystery show of the 1970s in which a celebrity panel had to work out the murderer from a drama performed in front of them. Which former "Doctor Who" actor presented the show for much of its run?

Answer: Jon Pertwee

"Whodunnit" aired from 1972 until 1978, with Edward Woodward being the original host - Jon Pertwee took over in 1973. Panelists were allowed to interview the actors, with only the guilty one being allowed to lie. Among the regular panelists were Joanna Lumley, Patrick Mower and Liza Goddard.
7. As well as the main, male, presenter, "The Generation Game" also always featured a hostess, who introduced the contestants and sometimes took part in the games. Which one of the following ladies NEVER appeared on this show?

Answer: Carol Smillie

"The Generation Game", which debuted on BBC in 1971, featured four family couples who were a generation apart, such as mother and son or uncle and niece. They played in a number of games with the eventual winners getting to keep all the prizes they could remember from a conveyor belt that passed before them at the end. Hostesses included Anthea Redfern, who appeared with, and later married, Bruce Forsyth; Isla St Clair, who appeared with Larry Grayson; and Rosemarie Ford, who appeared alongside Jim Davidson. Carol Smillie was an assistant on "Wheel of Fortune".
8. Which one of the following was NOT one of the zones in "The Crystal Maze" between 1990 and 2020?

Answer: African

"The Crystal Maze" aired on Channel 4 between 1990 and 1995, and again between 2016 and 2020. Teams of six players had to navigate their way through different zones playing various games, in order to win time in the final Crystal Dome where they would attempt to collect gold foil tokens whilst avoiding the silver ones. Apart from those listed in the question, other themed zones were Medieval, Futuristic and Eastern.

The original, and probably best known, host of the series was Richard O'Brien.
9. Which soap actor was host of "Bridge of Lies", which debuted on BBC in 2022?

Answer: Ross Kemp

"Bridge of Lies" featured a team of four contestants, who attempted to collect money by crossing a "bridge" containing truths and lies about certain subjects. Those who made it to the far side came back for the final crossing which was general knowledge, but with only one true fact per row. If one player made it to the end of the final crossing, the team collected the jackpot of the money they had accumulated. Presenter Ross Kemp originally found fame playing tough guy Grant Mitchell in the soap opera "Eastenders" between 1990 and 2006.

He has since gone on to make a number of documentary series, often involving him interviewing gang members around the world.
10. What was the theme of the BBC panel show "Never Mind the Buzzcocks"?

Answer: Pop Music

"Never Mind the Buzzcocks" first aired on BBC in 1996, and was a comedy quiz show about pop music, with Mark Lamarr the original host. The show had various themed rounds, including "guess the intro" and "next line" of a song. The show's title was a play on words, merging the punk band The Buzzcocks with the Sex Pistols album "Never Mind the Bollocks".
