Mixture: Game Shows Trivia Questions

1. The game show: "The Weakest Link." Host George Gray asked: "What Hostess snack cake is named after the sound of bells ringing?" Instead of saying "Ding-Dongs" (the correct answer), what did the contestant say?

From Quiz
Game-Show Gateau: Dumb Answers for Dessert

Answer: Twinkies

Not surprisingly, the contestant was voted off in the next round. Like his predecessor Anne Robinson, host George Gray was never one to get in one last zinger when dismissing an eliminated contestant: "Jesse, the team has decided to send you back to your church, where the bells in the bell tower go, 'Twinkie! Twinkie!' [pause] You are the Weakest Link, goodbye."

2. "These are students from some of America's finest colleges and universities, showing exactly what they learn every week, on the game called, __________". What 1989 game show's opening did I just recite?

From Quiz Classic Game Show Opening Spiels

Answer: College Mad House

"College Mad House" was a weekly game show airing in syndication from 1989 to 1990 that featured two teams from rival colleges or universities competing in a battle of brains and brawn featuring some outrageous stunts and also a number of tough questions. The winning team ran through the College Mad House for a chance at some prizes for themselves and also some scholarship money for their school.

3. What 1980s game show featured a cartoon character singing, "Who would ever hurt a whammy?"?

From Quiz All About TV Game Shows

Answer: Press Your Luck

"Press Your Luck" involved contestants taking turns pressing their button to stop a ring of lights on a prize, money, or a whammy. The whammy was a cartoon character which symbolically took someone's money and prizes away. If someone landed on four whammies, that person lost the game. A short cartoon was shown each time a contestant landed on a whammy. One cartoon showed the whammy dressed as Boy George singing "Who would ever hurt a whammy?" before the whammy was hit by a large hammer.

4. In this game, you have the chance to win up to $3,000 in the beginning of the game, before even selecting a letter. This is through toss-up rounds. Which game is it?

From Quiz You Have the Chance to Win...

Answer: Wheel of Fortune

"Wheel of Fortune", hosted by Pat Sajak since 1983, has been a word game where contestants figure out phrases and win prizes. The show was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery in 1981, and temporarily by Alex Trebek

5. "Bob Barker reminding you, help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered. Goodbye everybody." What long-running CBS game show had this sign-off from 1972 until original host Bob Barker's retirement in 2007?

From Quiz Classic Game Show Sign-Offs

Answer: The Price is Right

"The Price is Right" began airing weekdays on CBS on September 4, 1972. It was originally hosted by Bob Barker. When he retired in 2007, Drew Carey took over as host.

6. What ground-breaking entertainment show launched the careers of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson?

From Quiz And the Winner Is?

Answer: "American Idol"

In the words of a top entertainment executive, "American Idol" has been the "most impactful show in the history of television". The brainchild of Simon Fuller, it debuted in 2002 on Fox. Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson were the first three judges who critiqued young men and women vocal performers. For almost ten years, "American Idol" appeared as one of the Top 10 shows in viewer audience on the Nielsen Ratings. From 2002 till 2012, artists from the show recorded over 300 successful songs. Some of the more famous contestants on the show have included Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Daughtry, and Clay Aiken. The winner of "American Idol" earns a major recording contract.

7. This quiz show came to British television in 2003 and was first presented by Dermot Murnaghan. A team of five challengers pit their intelligence against a team of five intellectual quiz experts for a cash prize. Which game show is it?

From Quiz The Eggheads' Favourite Game Shows

Answer: Eggheads

There is no greater way to start a team quiz by the Scrambled Eggheads than have a question about the "Eggheads" quiz show! An egghead can be described as a very intelligent person, genius, highbrow or mastermind. Set five of these types of people against a team of five amateur quizzers and you get the British quiz show "Eggheads". Each amateur plays against a chosen "Egghead" in a specific category. The player, either "Egghead" or challenger, who wins the most points out of three questions wins the round and goes on to play in the final. It goes to sudden death if there is no winner after this time. (Question and interesting information created by Plodd)

8. The 1980's game show "Press Your Luck" was relaunched in 2001 with what new title?

From Quiz I'm Thinking... I'm Thinking

Answer: Whammy!

The original "Press Your Luck" ran for three years, hosted by Peter Tomarken. The half hour show featured contestants winning prizes by stopping on various prizes on a seemingly random moving prize board. The word "seemingly" is used, as Michael Larson memorized the patterns of the board on a 1984 episode, and went 45 consecutive spins without hitting the dreaded Whammy, a small red computer-animated creature that comically removes a players' earnings. Larson won over $110,000 through the game. The show was relaunched in 2002, with the name "Whammy!", and host Todd Newton. Except for a special episode to honour Michael Larson's passing, the show did not receive viewership, and was cancelled after 18 months.

9. Contestants contend with a fickle wheel as they earn cash and prizes for solving word puzzles. Which game show is this?

From Quiz Name the Game Show

Answer: Wheel of Fortune

"Wheel of Fortune" first aired in 1975 on NBC with Chuck Woolery as host and Susan Stafford as letter turner. In 1983 the show premiered in syndication with Pat Sajak as host and Vanna White as letter turner, where it has been running ever since.

10. "They're only easy if you know the answers" was the catchphrase of one presenter of the global phenomenon TV quiz show 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. Where was the show first broadcast?

From Quiz They're Only Easy If You Know The Answers

Answer: UK

Chris Tarrant was the original question master on 'Millionaire' when it first broadcast on ITV in 1998. (The BBC, with great foresight, had previously rejected the concept!) The idea was that a contestant answered a series of multiple-choice questions. Getting 15 right would earn them £1m. Within a few years, the show was being broadcast in 100 countries.

11. Former "Family Feud" host John O'Hurley got a surprise when he asked a contestant, during a Fast Money round, to name a state that has a direction in its name. Which U.S. state with no direction in its name did the contestant respond with?

From Quiz Game Show Bloopers

Answer: Arizona

John O'Hurley took over for Richard Karn as the host of "Family Feud" in 2006, and remained on the show until 2010. In all of the show's incarnations, though, Fast Money has been fodder for some great game show bloopers. In this particular blooper, though, the man's partner bailed him out by giving the number-one answer to the question, North Dakota, and getting enough points to win Fast Money.

12. Which game show was the predecessor of the more famous "Press Your Luck"?

From Quiz Short-Lived Game Shows

Answer: "Second Chance"

"Second Chance" was hosted by Jim Peck and was on ABC from March 7 to July 15, 1977. "Second Chance" was produced by The Carruthers Company and was announced by Jay Stewart and Jack Clark.

13. In which Las Vegas hotel was "Dealer's Choice" originally broadcast in 1974 before moving to Los Angeles?

From Quiz Obscure Game Show Trivia

Answer: Tropicana

"Dealer's Choice" began broadcasting on January 21, 1974 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. Bob Hastings was the original host but was replaced by Jack Clark after only a few weeks.
