Dimitri and Maria had a one night stand in the summer of 1996 at the hunting lodge after both dealt with heartache. When she found out she was pregnant, she feared that Dimitri was the father. She would reveal the one night stand to Edmund in January 1997.

While both Dimitri and Maria were at the clinic, they met with the lab technician named Andy. He was the one who conducted the paternity test. Eventually, he realized that Skye doctored the results.

Tanner was Mateo's devious friend and he managed to find out that Skye altered the paternity test results to make it look like Dimitri was Maddie's biological father. He wound up blackmailing Skye to keep his silence over this knowledge. When he died, the police, Hayley and Mateo were surprised to see a suitcase full of cash in his car.

Edmund was at Wildwind when he was surprised to hear from Erica that he, not Dimitri, was Maddie's biological father. Despite how he was angry with Erica for kidnapping Maddie for her first few months, he was extremely thankful to her for delivering this news to him. When he was alone with Skye, she admitted to him she changed the test results. Edmund was irate with Skye over what she did.

Shortly before Edmund found out he was Maddie's biological father, Dimitri had learned the truth as well. He was devastated but he did not reveal it to his wife, Gloria. Edmund found out that Dimitri, Gloria and Maddie went to Budapest to his estate there, Vadzel.

Tad told Edmund he wanted to go with him to Budapest to get Maddie back. The two of them were seen disguised as women in order to get past the security at the airport in Budapest. Both men were successful and Edmund was finally reunited with Maddie just in time for Thanksgiving.
