Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What character is unlocked by playing either 20 hours or 700 matches in versus mode?

Answer: Mewtwo

The necessary versus mode playtime is cumulative across all human players, meaning that four players can meet the twenty-hour requirement with just five hours of play - or, more realistically, one player can by plugging in a few controllers, starting a match with no timer, and leaving the game on overnight.
2. What secret boss can be fought on Final Destination in the single-player Adventure Mode on Normal difficulty or higher?

Answer: Giga Bowser

Giga Bowser is encountered upon reaching and defeating Bowser, the usual final boss, without using any Continues. Thankfully, you're welcome to give yourself as many as five lives to do it.
3. What trophy do you receive when you unlock the level Brinstar Depths?

Answer: Kraid

Kraid, a recurring villain from the "Metroid" series, appears as a stage hazard in Brinstar Depths, rotating the battle arena by clawing at it. Frankly, he's big and scary, but in "Melee" he can't actually directly hurt you.
4. When you play as Link and angle the control stick down and press 'B' at the same time, what does Link do?

Answer: Grab a Bomb

After Link grabs a bomb, you can press 'A' to throw it or either shield button to drop it. You can also just hold onto it and let it explode, if you want - it can extend your aerial recovery. Unlike in "Ocarina of Time", Link only needs one hand to hold a bomb in "Melee".
5. How many usable Heart Containers appear in All Star Mode?

Answer: Three

They're all you have at your disposal in All Star Mode to use for recovery - since your job is to defeat every character in the game with just one life, it's important to play well and use them wisely. Heart Containers originate in the "Legend of Zelda" franchise, in which they replenish and extend Link's maximum health; in "Melee", they reduce your damage by 100%.
6. Which of these stages from the original "Super Smash Bros." does not reappear in "Melee"?

Answer: Sector Z

Sector Z, based on the level of the same name from "Star Fox 64" (or "Lylat Wars" in PAL regions), doesn't appear in Melee, though it shares many similarities with Corneria. Congo Jungle, Dream Land, and Yoshi's Island all return from the "Super Smash Bros." selection of stages, though they have to be unlocked in "Melee."
7. While some trophies have to be unlocked by accomplishing specific tasks, others can be purchased with in-game currency through what mini-game?

Answer: Lottery

The player can earn coins through single player or versus modes which can then be spent on the lottery, which always gives a trophy! Once you start building your collection, though, it can start giving you trophies that you already have, and it starts requiring more and more coins for higher odds of new trophies.
8. There are exactly 50 Event Matches in "Super Smash Bros: Melee".

Answer: False

Single-player Event Matches are unique matches which may ask specific tasks of the player, such as protecting a Yoshi egg or defeating one foe while trying *not* to defeat another. After completing fifty Event Matches, number 51 is unlocked, which pits you against Giga Bowser, Mewtwo, and Ganondorf, three-against-one! Completing this unlocks Final Destination as a playable stage in versus and training modes.
9. What character from the "Fire Emblem" franchise is unlocked by completing the single-player Classic mode with every initially playable character?

Answer: Marth

Completing the classic mode with Marth then unlocks Roy, whose debut in the "Fire Emblem" franchise actually came later the same year "Melee" was released. "Melee" was what introduced most Western gamers to "Fire Emblem", which was scarcely localized outside of Japan up to that point. Marth and Roy were nearly left out of Western versions of "Melee", too!
10. You have the option to "shoot" the game's credits as they roll by after completing any single-player mode. What character do you unlock for shooting all of them?

Answer: No character is unlocked this way

While the Credits minigame is fun, it doesn't affect any other part of the game. I did once hear a rumor as a kid that you could unlock Sonic this way, and in the early 2000s there was a hoax about an unlockable Toad, including screenshots and a doctored character select screen.
