Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many playable characters can you choose from in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

Answer: Four

"When Mario opened a door after climbing a long stair in his dream, another world spread before him and he heard a voice call for help to be freed from a spell. After awakening, Mario went to a cave nearby and to his surprise he saw exactly what he saw in his dream..."

And that starts the story of "Super Mario Bros. 2", presented as though it were a stage play with four leading characters-- Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool. All four characters have their own quirks with different rankings for their speed, jump power, and strength. Mario, for instance, is well-balanced while Luigi jumps higher, Toad is quicker, and Princess Toadstool can float in midair.
2. There are many new items that Mario and co. can pick up in this game. Can they still collect Coins?

Answer: Yes

While Coins are much less frequently seen in this game, they do still appear when Mario or his companions use a Magic Potion to enter the Sub-space, a backwards realm in which they can locate not only Coins (by pulling them up from the ground), but also Mushrooms that can increase their health for the level.

The Coins can then be used upon completion of any given level to play in a slot machine that will grant you extra lives.
3. Known as Catherine in Japan, what new character was introduced in this game?

Answer: Birdo

The first time you meet Birdo will be at the end of World 1-1 when she stands between you and the Mask Gate. For early instances of Birdo, you'll face the pink version that'll fire eggs at you at a semi-regular rate. Your goal is to jump on the eggs, pluck them from the air, and use them as ammunition to defeat her (it'll take three). Later versions of Birdo will appear red or green and shoot fire in addition to eggs (or just fire for the green ones). Every World has a Birdo, but not every level.
4. The boss of World 1, Mouser, throws which of these at you during battle?

Answer: Bombs

World 1 is a bit of a primer level but it won't let you through without both encountering a slew of foes and learning a number of different tricks that'll get in your way. Themed around a charming grassland, World 1 will allow you to face your first Birdo, take a ride on a Flying Carpet, and go face-to-face with the terrifying Phantos, who'll activate when you pick up keys.

At the end of the area is the first full boss, Mouser, who'll throw Bombs your way. All you need to do is toss them back and hit him with them. Three hits'll end the World.
5. World 2 will allow you to enter which of these?

Answer: Pyramids

As you leave the grasslands of World 1, you'll emerge into a new environment for World 2-- the desert. It's here that you'll come across more dangerous foes, some of which that'll be larger and spikier and some of which that'll be more inclined to use projectiles. Additionally, you will occasionally be able to head into pyramid structures, digging through sand and dodging enemies to get to your end goal-- the Hydra creature at the end of World 2-3.

As with other bosses, it'll only take three hits to take this one down, but you will have ammunition at your disposal from the get-go, so if you can avoid its fireballs, you'll be in good shape.
6. It takes how many hits to defeat Mouser when you meet him, again, at the end of World 3?

Answer: Five

World 3 is a world of waterfalls and caves, and you'll need to navigate your way up and around seemingly-impossible natural settings to get through to the other end of this set of levels. Getting to the final room of the labyrinth at the end of World 3-3 will put you back in front of Mouser, the boss of World 1-3, and the battle will unfold very similarly save for a few details. Firstly, the room will have a couple of added obstacles in the form of deadly foes. Secondly, you'll need to hit Mouser with five bombs instead of three.

In later ports of this game, Mouser is replaced by a new boss, a robot version of Birdo.
7. Which of these makes surfaces slippery in World 4?

Answer: Ice

Marking the game's midway point (as there are seven Worlds), World 4 brings you to a snow-covered, icy realm that'll cause a bit of a frictionless problem, especially if you don't have a handle on your characters' capabilities so far. In addition to large expanses of levels that are simply flat runs of ice, foes living here will be faster and more inclined to beeline straight for your characters.

The final boss here, Fryguy, is just a giant fireball, and when he's hit three times he'll split into four Small Fry Guys who'll need to be smacked to be stopped.
8. The boss of World 5-3 will be which of these animals?

Answer: Crab

Though World 5 takes place in a nighttime world, much of it is spend indoors. You'll end up passing through regions with new enemies yet, but the back-and-forth between night sky and cavern/castle will be pretty consistent. By the end you'll end up not only facing Green Birdos for the first time (which will only shoot fire at you), but a new boss, Clawgrip, who'll appear in the form of a crab. Clawgrip will toss boulders at you in a fairly regular pattern. All you need to do is collect them before they roll into a pit and toss them back at him five times.
9. World 6 is set in the same environment as World 2.

Answer: True

For no clear reason, World 6 brings you right back into the desert for the penultimate set of levels, revisiting sandy dunes, cactuses and spiky enemies, pyramids, and diggable sand piles galore. The final boss of this area will once again be the Tryclyde (the hydra seen at the end of World 2) and his mechanics won't much change.

The difficulty will come from the boss room layout which not only limits the space you'll be able to maneuver around in, but the amount of projectiles you'll have on-hand to toss at it. Three hits and he's done, just like last time.
10. The final boss of "Super Mario Bros. 2" isn't Bowser. Instead it's who of these rarely-seen foes?

Answer: Wart

The last world only has two levels as the crew makes its way up through the clouds to Wart's Lair at the top. Not only will foes like Birdo become de rigeur by the end of all this, but a unique new foe, a rogue Maskface, will appear right before the final chamber. But after all of it, it'll come down to a battle against Wart who, like all other bosses, just needs to be hit with projectiles. This time they'll be vegetables provided to you from a centrally-located machine. If you can dodge Wart's bubble blasts, toss six vegetables into his mouth, and survive the match, that'll be it!

The game will end with a total score based on which characters completed the most levels and then Mario will wake up from a dream as the credits roll.
