Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The game begins with Mario arriving in which unlikely location?

Answer: An airstrip

Mario, along with Peach, Toadsworth, and others from the Mushroom Kingdom, will fly to Delfino Airstrip en route to a relaxing vacation in the paradise that is Isle Delfino, but when they arrive it'll become quickly apparent that something is wrong. An icky, paint-like goop will be on the the runway where they need to land, and even though Mario will be put to the task of cleaning it up, he'll get blamed for a number of other messy goings-on in the region. Oh yeah, and someone who looks like Mario is responsible for the chaos! Adventure inbound.
2. The FLUDD has how many different nozzles?

Answer: Four

Created by Gadd Science, Inc. (who you may recognize from "Luigi's Mansion"), the FLUDD (or the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device) is picked up on Delfino Airstrip and it sticks with Mario throughout the bulk of the game excluding 'secret' areas. With this, Mario can shoot water at any enemies or gunk to fight back against whatever's going on in the game.

FLUDD has four nozzles, specifically the starter Squirt Nozzle, the Hover Nozzle, the Turbo Nozzle, and the Rocket Nozzle, the latter two of which are found later in the game.

Provided Mario can keep his water levels full, he's good to go.
3. Instead of collecting Power Stars, Mario must locate which of these throughout the game?

Answer: Shine Sprites

There are one hundred and twenty Shine Sprites throughout the game across a handful of expansive courses that will test Mario's skills in general platforming, boss fights, and FLUDD management. By collecting these, Mario can progress through the story to the point where he will, eventually, face off against the perpetrator(s) of all the bad stuff on Isle Delfino, and along the way he'll make the vacation spot a bright, sunny place to be. Most of these Shine Sprites can be found by completing the levels, but a number of them are also collected through unexpected means from Delfino Plaza if you're keeping your eyes peeled.
4. Which of these levels is accessed earliest?

Answer: Bianco Hills

Once Mario gets his bearings and starts cleaning up Delfino Plaza he'll come across the first of several portals that will take him to the various blighted destinations of Isle Delfino-- surely all locations that would have otherwise made a great vacation destination. Once he sprays water on the entrance and leaps in, he'll be teleported straight over, and the first one of these he'll find, right on the statue in the main plaza, takes him to Bianco Hills, a picturesque village next to a lake. More locations start to open up as Mario gets more Shine Sprites and engages with goings-on in the Plaza.
5. Who, as it's discovered, is actually Shadow Mario?

Answer: Bowser Jr.

Once Princess Peach is nabbed and taken to Pinna Island, Mario will start his trip there with a fight against Shadow Mario and Mecha-Boswer, during which it will be revealed that the perpetrator (and actual vandal) is Bowser Jr., who's arrived at the island to wreak havoc and lure Peach, who he believes is his mother, to Isle Delfino.

After the mission, Bowser Jr. will fly off with Peach to Corona Mountain.
6. Which of these does Yoshi not eat in the game?

Answer: Chocolate

Once Mario unlocks Yoshi he can find an egg in virtually every course, calling upon Yoshi to help him with certain missions. There are caveats, however. To free Yoshi from his egg, Mario has to provide a requested fruit that he'll have to locate first and foremost. Additionally, FLUDD is not usable on Yoshi's back; Yoshi can instead fire juice (from the fruits) to do the same effect. Finally, Yoshi can't touch water, otherwise it's back into the egg with him.
7. Blue Coins are worth 5 Golden Coins in this game.

Answer: False

Although Gold, Red, and Blue Coins all appear in this game, the Golden ones are the only ones to accumulate level to level for any utility. Gold Coins refill Mario's health, but you can also collect 100 of them per course (excluding Corona Mountain and Delfino Airstrip) to get an extra Shine Sprite.

Red Coins are objective coins and they're typically collected (as a set of eight) for a Shine Sprite in regular and 'secret' levels.

Blue Coins are a whole other thing. Mario can find these rarer coins in each area, and when he has ten, he can trade them to the Raccoons who have a shop inside the boathouse (where the Ricco Harbor entryway is). Ten of them equals a Shine Sprite, and Mario can get twenty-four of them via these means.
8. Which common "Mario" series enemy does not appear in this game?

Answer: Goomba

Although all of these other foes make returns in this game, Goombas are a noteworthy omission (as are Koopa Troopas, but different Koopas appear throughout). Bob-Ombs return starting in Pinna Park, Chain Chomps can be found in Pianta Village, and Boos are in Sirena Beach.

Other familiar faces include Piranha Plants, Wiggler, Bullet Bill, and Blooper, amongst a slew of new foes that suit the new environments.
9. Revisiting 'secret' levels throughout the game allows Mario to utilize which of these on reentry?

Answer: FLUDD

Many courses of the game allow Mario to visit alleged 'secret' spaces (though they aren't entirely secrets since they're objectives he needs to overcome) and these will take him to another realm for some classic, complicated platforming in the void. Mario's first visits to these will commence with Shadow Mario taking the FLUDD from his back, leaving him to rely entirely on his own skills to get the Shine Sprite at the end.

Revisits, however, allow Mario to return with FLUDD intact. Instead, Mario can claim a second 'secret' Shine Sprite by completing a time trial Red Coin hunt.
10. The final battle against Bowser will be held along the edge of a large tub. Mario has to strike it how many times to end the fight?

Answer: Five

While these types of boss battles usually end up going by a rule of three, the battle at the top of Corona Mountain will have Mario using his Rocket Nozzle to get around the edge of Bowser's colossal hot tub, striking platforms at the five edge points to bring the cistern crashing down. Bowser and Bowser Jr. will be banished from Isle Delfino while Princess Peach, Mario, and FLUDD will land near the Plaza. Sunlight will be restored, in full to the island, and the game will come to its effective end.
