Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you first start up a new save file, what is the very first Shine Sprite that Mario can acquire?

Answer: 'Delfino Airstrip Gatekeeper' Shine

The very first Shine that can be acquired in "Super Mario Sunshine" is the Delfino Airstrip Gatekeeper Shine. When Mario first arrives at Delfino Island, the plane must make a sudden stop when landing due to a Gatekeeper blocking the airstrip. Mario gets out of the plane with Peach and company and must defeat the Gatekeeper to earn his first Shine.
2. What level does Mario have to complete in order to unlock Yoshi?

Answer: 'The Wilted Sunflowers'

Yoshi can be unlocked by completing the fourth episode of Pinna Park, 'The Wilted Sunflowers'. After Mario collects the Shine from the level he will be transported back to Delfino Plaza where Shadow Mario is waiting for him while holding a Yoshi egg. After chasing down and defeating Shadow Mario, Mario can now find a Yoshi egg not too far from the fountain. Later in the game Yoshi relocates to a roof by a dirty bell.
3. "Super Mario Sunshine" is the only 3D "Mario" up until its release game to have which feature?

Answer: Fully voice acted custscenes

While each "Mario" game adds something new to make the games interesting and unique, "Super Mario Sunshine" was the only 3D "Mario" game to feature fully voice-acted cutscenes. With the exception of Mario, almost every main character had at least one cutscene where an actor portrayed their voices to add to the story of the game.

Some characters even had several scenes where they had full voice-acting such as Bowser Jr.
4. In "Super Mario Sunshine", Mario meets a new friend named FLUDD. What does FLUDD stand for?

Answer: Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device

When Mario first meets FLUDD, FLUDD makes it clear that its name actually stands for "Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device".
5. "Super Mario Sunshine" added a few new moves to Mario's moveset. Which option is not one of the new moves that was added in?

Answer: Punch

Quite a few new moves were added to "Super Mario Sunshine" but the Punch attack not only was absent from the game, but also was last seen in "Super Mario 64".
6. How many Shines are required to get to the end of the game but not required for a 100% run?

Answer: Fifty

While there are one hundred and twenty Shines in the game, you only need to collect fifty to unlock the end of the game. Mario will have to beat Shadow Mario in all seven locations, which can only be achieved after getting at least fifty Shines.
7. There are a few hidden speed runner tricks in "Super Mario Sunshine" that can significantly decrease the play time of a run. Which one of these is not a speed running technique available?

Answer: Backwards Long Jump

The Buffered Spin Jump, Momentum Spin Jump, and Playing the Japan version are all a part of "Super Mario Sunshine" and can help a speed runner significantly decrease their play time, the latter taking fifteen seconds off of your play time for a run, but the Backwards Long Jump (also known as a BLJ) from "Super Mario 64", was not present in "Super Mario Sunshine".
8. How many secret stages are found in Delfino Plaza?

Answer: Six

There are a total of six secret stages found throughout Delfino Plaza that can be entered through pipes and double doors.
9. "Super Mario Sunshine" added quite a few new enemies for Mario to face. Which of these is not a new enemy?

Answer: Bullseye Bill

The Bullseye Bill was not a new enemy introduced in "Super Mario Sunshine" but instead was a part of "Mario" games since "Super Mario Bros 3".
10. During what stage in "Super Mario Sunshine" does Princess Peach get kidnapped until the end of the game?

Answer: 'Mecha Bowser Appears'

"Super Mario Sunshine" was the only 3D "Mario" game to allow peach to remain uncaptured until about halfway through the game. Mario must enter Pinna Park and select the 'Mecha Bowser Appears' stage to trigger Shadow Mario capturing Peach and taking her to Corona Mountain.
