Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Soviet T-26 light tank, of which almost 11,000 units were built between 1931-1941, was a foreign design that was built under license. In which country was the original tank designed?

Answer: Great Britain

The Soviet T-26 was a license-built version of the British Vickers Mark E or "six tonner" tank, which was designed by the Vickers company but not adopted by the British Army. The T-26 was in Soviet service from 1932-1945 and it was the most numerous tank in the Soviet Army when World War II began.

The tank was also supplied to Turkey, China, and the Spanish Republican Army during the Civil War.
2. This German tank, the last major design put into production before World War II ended, was one of the heaviest tanks to see action. What was it generally called?

Answer: Tiger II

The Tiger II, also called the King Tiger, Royal Tiger, and Konigstiger, was a German heavy tank used in the last year of World War II. A development of the Panzer VI Tiger tank, the Tiger II was 15 tons heavier and had thicker, sloped armor. The Tiger II was not a reliable vehicle, and was expensive and time consuming to build. Only 492 were completed before the war ended.
3. What was the designation of the first tank designed and built in the United States?

Answer: M1918

Known also as the Ford 3-ton tank and Ford Model 1918, this first American designed tank had a crew of two and was armed with a machine gun. The tank had no turret, the gun being mounted in the front of the vehicle. Only fifteen units were completed before World War I ended, and none saw action.

The tank did not meet the U.S. Army's needs, and production was halted after the first fifteen were made.
4. Though Japanese tanks in World War II were inadequate compared to Western models, Japan has built several excellent tanks in the post-war period. What is the designation of the Japanese main battle tank introduced in 2010?

Answer: Type 10

Japan began building domestically designed tanks again in 1961, producing three models, the Type 61, Type 74, and Type 90 by 1990. The Type 10 was introduced in 2010, and is compatible with Western designs such as the U.S. M-1 Abrams, the British Challenger, and the French Leclerc. Main armament is a 120mm gun and there is a crew of three.
5. The German Army deployed some 2500 tanks for the World War II Battle of France, which commenced on May 10, 1940. How many tanks did the Allies have available for this operation?

Answer: 4,100

While manpower for both sides was over three million troops, the Allies outnumbered the Germans in both tanks and guns at the outset of the battle. The differences were in tactics, experience, and the tanks themselves. While the French had the heaviest tank, the Char B1, most of the Allied tanks were light units, not designed for tank on tank combat.

The Germans deployed their tanks in large units, supported by artillery and air power, while the Allies used their tanks in smaller formations, mainly to support the infantry.
6. Which French Main Battle Tank, first produced in 1966, was used not only by the French Army, but was also exported to a dozen other countries?

Answer: AMX-30

The French AMX-30 was the end product of a consortium of European allied nations, namely France, West Germany, Belgium, Italy, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg, that formed a workgroup in the mid 1950s to design and build a new medium tank. Political differences ended the group by 1963, and France adopted the AMX-30 in 1966. Smaller than contemporary American or Soviet tanks, the AMX-30 was still a good design and saw action in the Middle East during the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

The type is still in service.
7. In 1982, this South American country designed a Main Battle Tank to be used by their Army and for the export market. Which country designed the EE-T1 Osorio?

Answer: Brazil

In 1982, the Brazilian company Engesa designed a Main Battle Tank, the EE-T1 Osorio, with the idea that export sales of the tank would pay for the development of the vehicle instead of the Brazilian Army. The vehicle was evaluated by several countries, but no orders were placed and the program was ended in 1986.

The tank was comparable in size and armament to the French AMX-30 and the German Leopard I. Two prototypes were built, but the tank never went into production.
8. What was the model of Soviet tank, introduced in 1966, that was the first production tank to use an autoloader?

Answer: T-64

The Soviet Army adopted the T-64 into service in 1966. The autoloader eliminated one crew member, allowing for a smaller vehicle than the previous T-62, but one that was still heavily armored. The T-64 has seen combat in Africa and former Soviet republics. Some 13,000 units were produced between 1963-1987, and some upgraded units are still in service.
9. Introduced into service in the late 1950s, what was the main American tank for most of the Cold War?

Answer: M-60

Design work on the M-60, based on the very successful M-48 Patton tank, began in 1957. Larger and more heavily armored than the M48, the M-60 was the main American tank from 1959 until the 1980s. The M-60 has seen extensive combat, almost all of it in the Middle East, serving in American forces and those of Israel and other nations. Over 15,000 units, in several variants, were produced from 1959-1983, and upgraded M-60s are still frontline units in several armies.
10. What was the last Main Battle Tank designed by the Soviet Union?

Answer: T-90

The T-90 tank, developed from the T-64 and T-72 models, was designed by the Soviets before the country dissolved in 1991. The prototype was built in 1988, but production did not begin until 1992. The T-90 is Russia's most modern tank, and has been exported to ten other countries.

India built some 1,400 T-90s under license, making her the largest operator of the tank, while the Russians have built some 2,600 units, most of which were exported. The T-90 has seen combat in the Middle East and in conflicts between former Soviet republics.
11. What was the first German tank called?

Answer: A7V

After facing the first British tanks at the 1916 Battle of the Somme, the German War Ministry set about designing and building a tank for the German Army. The result was a large, heavily armored vehicle armed with a 57mm gun and six machine guns that weighed almost 35 tons.

The first use of the weapon was on March 21, 1918 near the St. Quentin Canal in the area of the Somme River. The tank was expensive and time consuming to build, and only 20 were completed before the war ended.
12. Which British tank replaced the Chieftain in British service in 1983?

Answer: Challenger 1

The British Challenger 1 originated in a request from the Royal Iranian Army for an improved Chieftain variant. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution deposed the Shah, the British Army took over the contract and redesigned the tank to NATO standards. The first units entered service with the British Army in 1983.

The Challenger was the first tank to have the British developed Chobham armor, which is superior to rolled steel armor and has been shared with the American M1 Abrams and other NATO allies. Challengers served in the 1991 Gulf War.

The type was retired in British service in 2001 with the adoption of the Challenger 2.
13. Which Asian nation developed and built the K2 Black Panther Main Battle Tank beginning in 1995?

Answer: South Korea

In 1995, design work began on South Korea's K2 Black Panther tank, an indigenous design to meet the needs of the South Korean Army. South Korea had previously built the K1, which was a Korean built tank based on the U.S. M1 Abrams, but the K2 is a completely new design. Entering service in 2014, the K2 is also built in Turkey as the Altay, and Poland adopted the K2 in 2002 and is slated to produce them in Poland beginning in 2026.

The K2 weighs 61 tons, has a 120mm gun, and a crew of 3.
14. In the North African theater of World War II, which was the predominant tank model used by the Italian Army?

Answer: M13/40

The Italian medium tank M13/40 first entered service in 1940. The tank was small, at only 15 tons, to be classified as a medium tank, and was armed with a 47mm gun which was barely adequate. The tank served Italian forces in the invasion of Greece in 1940 and in North Africa, where many were destroyed in the Second Battle of El Alamein.

The tank was phased out of service by the time of the Italian surrender in 1943.
15. Which Eastern European country produced and fielded the Turan medium tank in World War II?

Answer: Hungary

The Hungarian 40M Turan medium tank was based on the Czechoslovakian T-21 prototype, built by the Skoda armaments company. The T-21 was not put into production due to the German occupation, and the prototypes were given to Hungary. The tank weighed 18 tons and was armed with a Hungarian designed 40mm gun.

A variant, the 41M Turan was armed with a short-barrelled 75mm gun. Both variants saw combat against Soviet forces in World War II. A third variant, the 43M Turan, with a long-barrelled 75mm gun, was never put into production.
