Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is a correct name for an armored division in Japanese during World War II?

Answer: Senshashidan

An armored (tank) division in the IJA during WW2 is usually referred to as an "Senshashidan", although some sources also uses "Kikoshidan". During WW2, Japan only had four armored divisions in total.
2. Japanese tank developments at the outbreak of the Second World War were most heavily influenced by which of the following countries?

Answer: France

Most Japanese tanks were either based upon or copies of French designs before the clash with the USSR on the Manchurian border in 1939. One example of this was the Japanese adaptation of the French Renault FT tank, which despite its obsoleteness by the second half of the 1930s proved quite useful against the inferiorly equipped Chinese army.
3. What was the name of the most produced Japanese tank in World War II?

Answer: Type 95 Ha-Go

The Type 95 Ha-Go tank was poorly armored and underarmed, so much so that it was essentially useless against American medium tanks such as the M4 Sherman. Despite this, it saw extensive service due to its relative cheapness and ease of transport.
4. This vehicle was Japan's first indigenous tank (tankette) design, built for the role of supporting infantry and recon. What was this 'tank' called?

Answer: Type 92 Jyu-Sokosha

The Type 92 Jyu-Sokosha was frequently referred to as an armored car due to its hopelessly thin armor and lack of an actual gun. However, it was officially classified as an light tank or tankette.
5. During most of World War II, Japanese medium tanks often found themselves outmatched by their Allied opponents. Therefore, they were most widely used in what role?

Answer: Artillery and fire support

Due to the wrong lessons being learnt from the Chinese during the Second-Sino Japanese War, Japan was much slower compared to other major powers to develop heavier and more powerful tanks. This resulted in heavy losses when their tanks engaged British, American, and Soviet designs. As a result, the Japanese military considered them far more useful as an artillery support unit instead.
6. Which of the following was NOT a tank in Japanese service during the Cold War?

Answer: Type H2006 'Accord'

The Type 61 was very similar to the American M48 Patton, and it integrated many features from it. The Type 74 was considered an advanced tank at the time of its introduction, and it carried the same 105mm L7 gun as the M60 tank. In addition, Japan also used over a hundred M41 Walker Bulldog lights, despite the fact that such tanks were no match even for the T-55.

Also, for those of you who still don't know yet, the Honda Accord is not a tank.
7. Which of the following companies manufactured both the Type 10 and the Type 90 Kyu-Maru Main Battle Tank?

Answer: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was involved in the manufacturing of numerous Japanese military projects even before World War II. Notable products include the Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero' fighter, Mitsubishi MU2 transport aircraft, and the Mitsubishi Outlander.
8. What was the name of the self propelled anti-air vehicle that was built on the chassis of the Type 74 Main Battle Tank?

Answer: Type 87

The Type 87 was equipped with the Gepard air defense system and a pair of Oerlikon KDA cannons, and like many of the anti-air systems of its age, is uses radar guidance.
Also, Type IS-250 is not correct because if it was, tomorrow you might see your neighbor driving one to work.
9. The Type 74 tank is equipped with an cross-linked hydropneumatic suspension. Which of the following is an advantage of having a hydropneumatic suspension?

Answer: Ability to raise and lower part of the chassis/hull

The Type 74 tank's hydropneumatic system allowed it to navigate through rough terrain and fire at targets beyond its main gun's elevation and depression angle, something that was unusual for tanks of its class and age.
10. This 4-crew Japanese medium tank was considered decent at its inception, but its late introduction rendered it outclassed. What was this tank called?

Answer: Type 97 Chi-Ha

The Type 97 was also the most produced Japanese medium tank in World War II. Like many Japanese tanks of its era, it was intended for infantry support, and it was not a match for the M4 Sherman.
