Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is known that Sir Robert Baden-Powell started the Boy Scouts, but who started the Girl Scouts of the USA?

Answer: Juliette Gordon Low

In 1911, Juliette met Lord Baden-Powell at a party and they talked about the scouting program. After the death of her husband (who she was also in the process of divorcing) she was looking for a project to occupy her time, and setting up an American version of the British Girl Guides seemed to fit the bill.
2. We know that Baden Powell was from England, but where was the founder of the Girl Scouts of America from?

Answer: Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is the Mecca for Girl Scouts. They moved the National Offices to New York, but you can tour her home in Savannah, which is said to be haunted by her grandmother, or her childhood home outside of the Savannah city limits.
3. The first US Girl Scouts meeting took place on March 12, 1912, and were then known as Girl Guides (as in the UK). When did the US Girl Guides change their name to Girl Scouts?

Answer: 1913

This is the day the first Girl Scout meeting was held in the United States; March 12, 1912.
4. Where was the first Boy Scouts camp held?

Answer: Brownsea Island, England

In 2007, the 100th Anniversary and the World Jamboree was held in England. Only 1000 people were allowed on the Island on August 1st. They were given a shirt that said "One Island, 100 years, and 1000 people". My husband got a shirt there!
The first national meeting was held two years later (1909) at Crystal Palace, South London.
5. Where Girl Scouts are famous for selling their Girl Scout cookies to fund raise, what are Boy Scouts of America known to sell these days?

Answer: Popcorn

Boy Scouts can choose not to sell popcorn and use other venues to raise money for their troop. In certain councils, such as my council, that is one of the requirements to receive funding through their councils. The popcorn name that the Scouts use is Trail's End.
6. Boy Scouts have different stages of Cub Scouts. What does the younger Girl Scouts program have?

Answer: Brownies and Daisies

Cubs start in First Grade with Tiger Cubs, and progress with Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. Girl Scouts start as Daisies in kindergarten.
7. Boy Scouts' highest award is the Eagle. What is the Girl Scouts?

Answer: The Gold Award

My sister and I earned the award. You have to do most of the same requirements that Boys do. However, according to my dad, an Avid Boy Scouter, Girl Scouts' high honor is harder with that we had to also write a book on all of the requirements that we did in order to get the Gold Award. Before you get the Gold Award, we had to receive the Silver Leadership, Silver Award, Gold Leadership, then the prestigious Gold Award.
8. What co-ed program was created for girls in the Boy Scout program?

Answer: Venturing, Exploring, and Learning for Life

I was in the original Exploring and received the highest award, The Exploring Achievement Award along with my sister. She and I (I am female) were in the Native American Explorers. Venturing took over where Exploring was in the program and Exploring programs are educational programs that help youth get into professions, ex: Fire Department and Police Department.

The Learning for Life is a similar program for Learning for Life. Due to the scrutiny of Boy Scouts, Exploring and Learning for Life, the term Boy Scouts is not mentioned though they are funded through them.
9. Girls Scouts have several high adventure camps throughout the US. What are the names of the four Boy Scout high adventure camps that are nationally recognized in the USA?

Answer: Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, Summit

I have participated in Philmont and Sea Base. I would like to go to Northern Tier, but that would be canoeing through the boundary waters between Canada and the U.S. My dad has done all three camps. Northern Tier might be harder for short female such as myself.
10. Girl Scouts sometimes hire their Girl Scout leaders and have volunteer leaders, but who are the main leaders for the Boy Scout programs?

Answer: Volunteers from Parents and the Community

During Round-up Scout night, the District Executive, the Boy Scout Professional, talks about the troop or pack that the youth is to join and ask for volunteers. Usually there is already a Cub or Scout Master, but this helps get committee members, Den Leaders, and Assistant Scout Masters.

This then will help the rotation of Leaders within the Troop and Cub Packs. Leaders are not paid, just rewarded with awards. Like one clever ex-Boy Scout Professional told me once, there are 4 types of people who like to be awarded, girls, boys, men, and women.

He is my husband!
