Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jozef (Joseph) Pilsudski was a born revolutionary. At the fist opportunity, he joined the Narodnaya Vola (a Russian Revolutionary movement). On March 22, 1887, he was falsely accused of plotting assassination of Czar Nicholas III. After his arrest, what was his sentence?

Answer: Five years exile to eastern Siberia.

First, Pilsudski was sent to the small town of Kirinsk. Later, he was moved to another location at a place called Tunka. He was engaged in one of the prisoner revolts, and ended up losing two teeth. Yhos may be the reason why he grew a mustache.
2. In 1894, what socialist newspaper did Pilsudski start publishing?

Answer: Robotnik

Obviously, the Robotnik periodical was part of the larger underground movement. If the Russian government had discovered it, he would most likely have been shot for his Polish nationalist viewpoints.
3. What was the name of Pilsudski's first wife?

Answer: Maria Juszkiewiczowa

The Polish word for wife is "zona." The two were married in 1899. However, Maria died in 1921. Throughout the marriage, relations were tense because of the fact that Pilsudski was cheating on his wife with Aleksandra Zahorska, another, younger, Socialist, who would that same year become Pilsudski's second wife.
4. During the Russo-Japanese War, which country did Pilsudski attempt to gain aid from for a possible uprising in Poland?

Answer: Japan

Since Pilsudski's cause was desperate, he offered several things to the Japanese in exchange for their aid. First, Pilsudski offered the Japanese anti-Russian intelligence that would greatly aid them in their war. Furthermore, realizing that many Polish citizens had been unfairly drafted into the Russian Army, he allowed the Japanese to create a branch of the Polish Legions, consisting of captured Polish troops, to help fight the Russians. Eventually, the Japanese vetoed the idea of the Polish legion and only supplied the Poles with limited weapons and ammunition.
5. Pilsudski's PPS Socialist armed revolters actually came into armed conflict with Roman Dmowski's National Democratic Party's troops.

Answer: True

The Russian Revolution was a perfect opportunity for an armed uprising in Poland. It was not uncommon for Pole to fight Pole, as was the case with Dmowski and Pilsudski. Ironically, both men were diplomats of a fashion, and worked together to negotiate with Japan.
6. What was Pilsudski's view on how Poland should stand in World War I?

Answer: Side with the Central Powers to defeat Russia, then side with the Allies to eliminate them.

Pilsudski's view was a logical one. The Central Powers were at that time more powerful than "Mother Russia" and so Pilsudski would use that to his advantage.
7. When was Pilsudski appointed Commander in Chief of the Polish Armed Forces?

Answer: November 11, 1918

November 11 is Armistice Day, when World War I ended. The Regency Council gave him his title.
8. "There are doors that open and close, and it depends on who forces them open and how __." What is the missing word in this quote?

Answer: far

Pilsudski had the future borders of Poland in mind when he said this quote. He also once said, "All that we can gain in the West depends on the Entente - on the extent to which it may wish to squeeze Germany".
9. Pilsudski died before the Second World War.

Answer: true

He died in 1935. That was four years before the outbreak of the second major global catastrophe. He is buried in Vilnius.
10. Pilsudski's Life inspired a 2001 Polish television series based on his life.

Answer: True

The program was called Marszalek Pilsudski. In many, varied ways Pilsudski's legacy has been kept alive from generation to generation. Like all true Poles, he will never be forgotten.
