Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the counter of the travel agency you want something exotic, not far away from Israel and maybe with 'The Exodus' in mind. The clerk suggests that you wish to go to 'Mitsrayim'. Where on Earth are you going to?

Answer: Egypt

'Mitsrayim', the Hebrew name for Egypt, has its roots in Noah's family. It literally translates as 'Son of Ham', who in turn, was the son of Noah. 'Mitsrayim' can also mean 'The Land of Ham'. This is mentioned in Psalms (105:23). According to some authors, it can also mean 'oppression' or 'narrow', referring to the spiritual redemption of the people of Israel in ancient Egypt.
2. You are in the mood for some romantic travel in the 'City of Lights' and relax with some 'fries'. The clerk suggests a trip to 'Tsarfat'. Where has she suggested that you go?

Answer: France

'Tsarfat' comes from a biblical reference to a Phoenician city called Sarepta, which is located in modern day Lebanon. The Zarphatic language is the extinct language of the Jewish community in northern France and some parts of west-central Germany.
3. You want to go to a country whose flag bears the same colors as the Israeli flag. This time, the clerk suggests you go to 'Yavan'. Which country is this?

Answer: Greece

The Hebrew word for Greece is related to an ancient Greek tribe, the Ionians.
4. You want to soak up some sun and some culture in the same place. The clerk suggests a visit to 'Sfarad'. Where is she recommending you to go?

Answer: Spain

The exact source of the Hebrew word, 'Sfarad' (as a toponym-Spain) is a problem in linguistical circles, as well as the usage of 'sefardim' in a meaning as 'Spanish Jewish' or 'Spaniard'. The Sarajevo Haggadah (a collection of prayers, biblical stories and illustrations relating to Pesach) was brought to Sarajevo by Sefardim settlers, who were exiled from Spain in 1492.
5. You are planning to go on a trip for a long time, so you ask for variety and a vast land to explore. The clerk in Israel suggests that you think about a journey to 'Artzot ha'brit'. Where may you be going to?

Answer: USA

With the renewal of Hebrew as a modern language today, several phrases were used to describe the United States of America such as:'artzot me'uchadot' and 'medinot me'uchadot' (me'uchadot means 'united'). 'Artzot ha'brit' was used in Hebrew papers, as early as 1857 (which literally means, 'Lands of the Covenant').
6. After the frantic pace of your travels to date, you want to explore a country with variety, but also the opportunity to relax and meditate, so you suggest 'Hodu'. Where will the clerk book your flight for?

Answer: India

'Hodu' is the Biblical name for India. It appears once, in the Book of Esther. The name derives from the Persian word Hindu. The area called 'Hodu' refers to the regions near the Indus river, from where it gets its name.
7. You want to visit a really long trail somewhere on the planet. As you try to think of where to do this, the clerk suggests 'Sin'. Where could you go?

Answer: China

The Hebrew word for China, in fact, comes from Late Latin, Greek and probably is a variation of the Chinese word, 'Qin' (pronounced as Chin).
8. You want to travel through time to a large country which doesn't exist anymore. If you are Ashkenasi, you might be able to see some of your relatives. The clerk rubs her chin, and then suggests 'Brit ha-mo'atsot'. Where might you time-travel to?

Answer: The Soviet Union

'Brit ha-mo'atsot' (the covenant of the councils) is what is used to refer to the USSR, since the former Soviet Union was a federation of councils or soviets.
9. You have an Ireland flag in your hand, and gesture that you want to go there. Unfortunately, the clerk is looking at the flag from the other side, so the colors are the wrong way around. She books you on a flight to 'Republika Hof Shenhav'. Where did you end up?

Answer: Ivory Coast

The Hebrew name for the Ivory Coast comes directly from translating the word Ivory (shenhav) and Coast (hof). Hof can also mean a beach, a strand or a shore.
10. You want to cruise and soak up the sun, so you want to book a journey on the 'Yam ha'Tichon'. On which sea shall the clerk book your cruise for?

Answer: The Mediterranean Sea

The Hebrew word for the Mediterranean Sea, literally translated, means 'Middle Sea', from 'yam' (sea) and 'tichon' (middle).
