Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1913, the International Association of Rotary Clubs held their annual conference in Buffalo, NY. One night, in the Hotel Statler, a group of Rotarians created a colorful group that lasted until the drinks were gone the next morning. What was this whimsical group called?

Answer: The Ancient, Honorable, and Fragrant Order of the Pink Goat

The Rotarians came up with some official titles to go with the 'goat' theme: the president was called the 'Billy Goat' while other leaders were known as 'Angora Goat' and 'Nanny Goat.' Hey, it's better than dropping water balloons out of the window. By the way, the Mystic Knights of the Sea might be familiar to people who remember 'The Amos and Andy Show.'
2. Named after a medieval English society comprised of hooded law officials, the Northwestern University School of Law was the first to bestow which honor on top-ranking graduating law students in 1910?

Answer: The Order of the Coif

Bailiffs in medieval England wore tight-fitting hoods while guarding the royal courts. Their organization was known as the Order of the Coif. In 1877, the group was disbanded, but one of the professors at the University of Illinois knew of the Order and felt it would be a fitting way to recognize law students who excelled in their class.

In 1902, the university authorized the formation of a new society, Theta Kappa Nu, and in 1910, this was merged with the Northwestern Society to be known as the Order of the Coif.

It is considered a high honor to be a member since only a few law schools have received permission to organize campus chapters.
3. The International Concatenated Order of Hoo Hoo was formed in 1892 to represent what business?

Answer: Lumbering

The men who met in Gurdon, Arkansas, in 1892 first adopted the name Ancient Order of Camp Followers, but had second thoughts about how it would be interpreted. In order to distinguish themselves from other groups, the Hoo Hoo name was selected. Legend has it that one of the founders, Bolling Arthur Johnson, knew a Chicago lumberman named Charles McCarer. McCarer's hair style was unique: a spiky, tuft of hair in the middle of his bald head. Johnson called it the 'hoo hoo' look. To show that they were not picking on Mr. McCarer's tonsorial preferences, the group elected him (in absentia) the first Grand Snark of the Universe, otherwise known as 'the president.' 'Concatenated' means to 'join' or 'unite'.
4. The Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine is the official name of what organization known for its clowns, red hats, and hospitals?

Answer: The Shriners

When many Grand Lodges of Freemasonry refused to accept groups that had been organized in bars and taverns, more liberal members organized the 'Mystic Order' in the 1870's to promote fun and fellowship. The 'Ancient Arabic Order' was soon commonly referred to as the Shriners. Shriners are popular attractions in parades with their funny little cars and colorful clowns, but on a more serious note, they are noteworthy for their hospital work with children.
5. The butt of countless 'farmer's daughter' jokes, traveling salesmen finally received a degree of respectability when which group was formed in 1892?

Answer: The Ancient Mystic Order of Bagmen of Bagdad

In 1888, the United Commercial Travelers of America was founded to give traveling salesmen a professional organization. The UTC was a serious group on the outside, but members had a distinct sense of humor. In 1892, the Ancient Mystic Order of Bagmen of Bagdad was created in Cincinnati. It promotes itself as a place for salespersons to unwind and have fun.
6. African-American female family members of the Prince Hall Shriners have their own organization with what imperial title?

Answer: Daughters of Isis

At the 1910 annual session of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, held in Detroit, the Prince Hall Shrine formally organized the Daughters of Isis as an organization solely for their female family members.
The 'Daughters' are involved in a wide variety of community improvement projects.
7. In 1897, the Daughters of Isabella was organized in New Haven, Connecticut, for the benefit of Catholic women. One of their earliest goals was to do what?

Answer: Establish the birthday of Queen St. Isabella (April 22) as a national holiday in the United States

Along with their charitable work with local blood banks and Red Cross chapters, the Daughters of Isabella have lobbied politicians (unsuccessfully) since 1897 with the proposal for a national holiday honoring Isabella.
8. President Warren G. Harding mistakenly mentioned which non-existent farming organization in a June 5th 1923 speech?

Answer: The Ancient and Honorable Order of Haymakers

President Harding meant to refer to the National Haymakers Association, a group that was founded in 1879 as a 'fun and honor' group connected to the Improved Order of Red Men. Offices within the NHA included the First Farmer, Guard of the Hayloft, Collector of Straws, and the Guard of the Barndoor. The group disbanded in the 1950s.
9. Here's one for the birds: local chapters of both the Fraternal Order of Owls and the Fraternal Order of Orioles are known as what?

Answer: Nests

Both the Owls and the Orioles meet in Nests; the Fraternal Order of Eagles meets in Aeries.
10. Finally, new members of which British organization are known as Kangaroos?

Answer: Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes

There is no reasonable explanation for the term 'kangaroos' being used to describe new members. 'Buffalo', on the other hand, refers to the Asian animal, not the bison of the Wild West. The Buffaloes are one of the primary charitable organizations in the United Kingdom.
