Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Well, this was a strange journey; we were sailing with the Pilgrim Fathers on the MAYFLOWER, listening to GLORIA by Van Morrison and Them, when a SPITFIRE flew overhead.

Answer: Triumph

The Triumph Mayflower was manufactured in the early 1950s as an upmarket small car, but unfortunately it didn't find favour with the general public and so was withdrawn after Triumph made just 35,000 of them.

The Triumph Gloria was a beautiful-looking vehicle, manufactured in the 1930s. The man responsible for these curvy lines was Donald Healey, a former rally car driver who Triumph poached from Riley cars and made their technical director.

The Triumph Spitfire is probably one of the best known Triumph cars, being manufactured between 1962 and 1980.
A two-seater sports convertible, the Spitfire was equally at home on the road or the track and was designed by Italian, Giovanni Michelotti, a prolific designer of sports cars who also worked with manufacturers such as Ferrari and Maserati.
2. I drove to RIO for the CARNIVAL as partying is my FORTE.

Answer: Kia

Kia are a South Korean manufacturer, owned by Hyundai and launched the Rio in 1999 as a replacement for the Kia Pride. The Rio is available as a five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan and between 2012 and 2015 was Kia's best-selling model.

The Kia Carnival is a five-door minivan, first introduced in 1998 and until 2020 was known in the North American market as the Kia Sedona.

The Kia Forte was introduced in 2008 and is popular in USA, selling over 75,000 models each year between 2015 and 2021. The Forte is not available in Europe, where the Kia Ceed continues to be a strong seller.
3. I dressed very smartly in my navy BLAZER and was having a great time in MALIBU until the AVALANCHE started.

Answer: Chevrolet

The Chevy Blazer has been around since 1969 and seems to have a few more years left in it yet, as in 2022 it was announced that an all-electric version, the EV Blazer will be in showrooms in 2024.

The Malibu also has a long history, having first been made by Chevrolet in 1969, as a trim level of the Chevelle before becoming a model in its own right in 1978.

The Avalanche is a pickup truck from Chevy, launched in 2001 and winning Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year in 2002.
4. I jumped in the car and had SANTANA blasting on the stereo as I drove to the POLO fields. Turns out I was at the wrong place though and should have been at the GOLF course.

Answer: Volkswagen

Whether you have seen a VW Santana or not might depend on where you live. In the majority of South American countries they are fairly common, apart from Argentina where they were sold as the VW Carat. Similarly, in North America they were badged as a VW Quantum, while in most of Europe they were called the VW Passat.

The VW Polo has, in one guise or another been around since 1975 and remains a strong seller for the manufacturer, as does the Golf, which is among the world's top three best-selling car models, and was the original "hot hatch", which so many manufacturers have attempted to emulate.
5. It wasn't a car I was driving in my dream but a ship. In fact, it was the ARGO, crewed by Jason himself, along with CRONOS as first mate and a giant PANDA as the cabin boy.

Answer: Fiat

The Fiat Argo debuted in 2017 as the South American market replacement for the Punto and Palio models. It is a five-door hatchback car and the Cronos is the four-door sedan model, with both selling well in Brazil and Argentina.

The Panda is a well known Fiat, having first hit showrooms in 1980 and selling almost eight million units worldwide in its first 40 years. This small hatchback is great for city driving and its name actually has nothing to do with the great Chinese bear, as it is derived from the Roman goddess of travellers, Empanda.
6. Back in the days of yore, it was common to see a CHARIOT pulled by a young COLT with a LANCER ready for battle alongside the charioteer.

Answer: Mitsubishi

The Mitsubishi Chariot had a 20-year run between 1983 and 2003, and in common with many other cars, had different names, depending on the market it being sold in.

It was also badged as the Mitsubishi Space Wagon, Mitsubishi Nimbus and Mitsubishi Expo, before being retired and replaced by the Mitsubishi Grandis.

Mitsubishi first used the Colt name on the Mitsubishi Colt 600, the company's first post-war passenger car, and it has since then, through various facelifts appeared on a variety of sub-compact and super mini cars.
The Lancer first rolled off production lines in 1973 and has through its many years been a sought after vehicle, especially the sports sedan model, the Lancer Evolution (Evo).
7. I have been driving all day and have noticed a vast difference in the ACCENT of people from SANTA FE, compared to residents of TUCSON.

The Santa Fe is a five door SUV (sports utility vehicle) that has been with us since 2001, and is a larger version of Hyundai's compact SUV, the Tucson.

The Tucson is Hyundai's best selling SUV as well as being one of the safest, with the 2022 model winning a Top Safety Pick+ award from the US based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
8. I drove to the theatre last night and saw a great show. A WIZARD, out of nowhere produced an IMP riding on the back of a HUSKY.

Answer: Hillman

The Hillman Wizard was manufactured in the early 1930s and was available in two engine sizes, a 2.1-litre and a 2.8-litre which produced 20.9 horsepower. A far cry from the cars of today.

The Imp is probably the best remembered car from Hillman and was a small car manufactured between 1963 and 1976. It was a rear-engined car and was also the first British mass-produced car with the engine block and cylinder head cast in aluminium. Bill McGovern, driving a Hillman Imp won the British Saloon Car Championship for three consecutive years between 1970 and 1972.

The Husky was a three-door estate car produced by Hillman, which between 1954 and 1957 was based on the Hillman Minx. In 1967 though, a new design of Husky hit the showrooms, this time based on the Imp and this model continued to be made until 1970.
9. We have to be up with the LARK this morning to drive to the Highland Games. I wonder which SCOTSMAN will be crowned CHAMPION?

Answer: Studebaker

The Lark was produced by Studebaker between 1959 and 1966 and was available as a sedan, coupe, convertible or station wagon.

The Studebaker Scotsman was a no-frills sedan or station wagon built in 1957 and 1958, which sold well in the face of flashy competitors from the likes of Ford, Chrysler and General Motors.

The Champion was manufactured between 1939 and 1958 and was one of Studebaker's best-selling cars due partly to its low weight and therefore high fuel economy figures, especially during World War II when gasoline was rationed.
10. I drove as far as the HORIZON and then walked into the meadow, RAPIER in hand ready to do battle with this MINX who plagues me.

Answer: Talbot

The Horizon was made between 1978 and 1987 by Chrysler but was badged as a Chrysler, a Simca or a Talbot, depending on which part of the world it was sold in.

It was a similar story with both the Rapier and the Minx, both of which were rebadged versions of the Talbot Alpine and Talbot Solara cars, which were produced by Chrysler Europe and neither of which sold well.
