In 1937, Italy succeeded in occupying Ethiopia and sent Haile Selassie into exile in Bath, England. Haile Selassie's legacy would find new life among the citizens of Jamaica who regarded him as the second coming of Jesus. Selassie remains the central figure in Rastafarianism to this day.

After the war, he was placed by allied forces in the mayorship of Cologne and in 1949 became the first Chancellor of West Germany, serving until 1963.
